Mutans streptococci in subgingival plaque of treated and untreated patients with periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of root caries is thought to be identical to coronal caries, though root caries seem to be more complicated because of the higher susceptibility of exposed roots (dentin) by periodontal therapy to demineralization than intact enamel. This implies that mutans streptococci are the most likely pathogens in the development of root caries. Although it is known that both the numbers of mutans streptococci and the frequency of isolation in root caries lesions are negatively correlated with the distance from the gingival margin, the subgingival sulcus has not been considered a

Does adherence to supportive periodontal care lower the risk of caries and related tooth loss? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The present systematic review critically summarizes the results of clinical studies investigating the risk of crown or root caries and tooth loss in adult patients suffering from periodontitis in relation to their adherence to supportive periodontal care (SPC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five electronic databases were searched for studies from 1947 to 2025. Odds ratios (or) were calculated for continuous outcome data (e.g., the number of new caries lesions or lost teeth) in a fixed or random-effects model. RESULTS: Thirty-nine articles, reporting 34 studies with 9685 patients at base

Coverage of previously carious roots is as predictable a procedure as coverage of intact roots.

BACKGROUND: Coverage of roots exposed by gingival recession is one of the main objectives of periodontal reconstructive surgery. A variety of highly predictable and esthetically acceptable mucogingival grafting procedures are available for treating intact root surfaces. One of the indications for root coverage procedures is prevention of root caries. However, little is known about the ability to treat previously carious roots by mucogingival grafting, and even less is known about the outcome of such treatment. METHODS: Sixty patients with gingival recession were treated with subepithelial con

Mineralising and antibacterial effects of modified calcium phosphate treatment on human root cementum.

BACKGROUND: Aging population will lead to the increase of incidence of root caries globally. The clinical management of root caries is challenging due to the difficulty in moisture isolation. The root caries is caused by the release of organic acids from cariogenic bacteria which results in the dissolution of cementum and dentin of the root. The purpose of this study is to study the efficacy of modified saturated calcium phosphate solution (CaP) supplement with zinc (Zn(2+)) and/or fluoride (F(-)) in providing root cementum surfaces less susceptible to acid dissolution and bacterial colonizati

Dental caries prevalence in early Polynesians from the Hawaiian Islands.

We examined the skeletal remains of 1338 early Hawaiians (preserved in the Bishop Museum, Honolulu) to determine total caries and root surface caries prevalence. Specimens from seven islands were represented in the collection. Estimation of age at death was made by a combination of dental developmental staging for younger individuals and occlusal attrition and/or alveolar bone loss in adults. Museum records were also consulted for age estimation of adults which was primarily based on osteological criteria. The material was divided into six age groups. Predentate infants and edentulous adults w

Examiner agreement on caries detection and plaque accumulation during dental surveys of elders.

Indices used to evaluate plaque accumulation and coronal caries have been widely accepted in epidemiological studies, yet their reliability cannot be guaranteed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of clinical criteria used in coronal and root caries diagnosis and oral hygiene evaluation as applied in elders. Nineteen elderly subjects, 73 years old on average, were examined at a first appointment by two independent examiners. They were re-examined two weeks later. Plaque accumulation was evaluated using the Plaque Index (PI) and coronal and root caries were detected according

Coverage of carious roots by a subepithelial connective tissue graft.

PURPOSE: To assess whether coverage of an untreated or restored carious root lesion with a subepithelial connective tissue graft would provide a predictable, esthetically acceptable result and prevent further caries progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven teeth from 13 patients with root caries and gingival recessions of 3.4 +/- 0.2 mm (mean +/- SEM) were treated with subepithelial connective tissue grafts. Eighteen teeth had untreated caries, and the other nine had composite or glass-ionomer restorations. The carious dentin and the plastic restorations were removed prior to the surg

[In vitro effect of an air-powder abrasive system on the susceptibility of dental tissues to artificial caries].

An air-powder jet abrasive system has recently been introduced for stain removal from teeth. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether its abrasive effect on enamel and on the root renders these surfaces more caries prone. The AIR-FLOW (EMS SA) abrasive was directed for 30 seconds on predetermined (test) sites of the crown and the root of each of 10 teeth, under controlled conditions. These and adjacent (control) sites in the form of windows, were then exposed to an acid gel for caries-like lesion formation. The central sections of each window were examined under the polarizing micr

Infected Dentine Revisited.

Dentine becomes infected as a result of caries lesion formation on root surfaces and when lesions progress following cavitation of enamel lesions. However, this infection is unimportant because the driving force for lesion formation and progression is the overlying biofilm. This explains why root surface caries can be controlled by mechanical plaque control and fluoride, and restorations are not needed to arrest these lesions. Similarly, the infected dentine in cavitated coronal lesions does not have to be removed to arrest the lesion. If the lesion is either accessible or opened for cleaning
