OBJECTIVE: External apical root resorption (EARR) is a side effect of orthodontic treatment that results in root shortening. However, this condition has yet to be evaluated in African Americans. The aim of this study was to determine the EARR prevalence within this ethnicity and investigate how patient and treatment-related factors contribute to root resorption.
METHODS: The records of 336 African Americans treated at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics were retrospectively analyzed with Dolphin Imaging software. Pre-treatment and post-treatm

AIM: To investigate the mechanisms by which periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) convert biomechanical stimulation into inflammatory microenvironment inducing root resorption (RR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: RNA sequencing was employed to explore mechanisms in force-inflammatory signal transduction. Then resorption volume, odontoclastic activity, PDLC pyroptotic ratio and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)-mediated pyroptosis pathway activation were analysed under force and pyroptosis inhibition. Further osteoclast formation, macrophage number and transwell polarization demonstrated the effects of

INTRODUCTION: The literature reports the association of external root resorption (ERR) with orthodontic movement. In cases of premolars extractions, orthodontic movement of anterior teeth is usually quite expressive, which are precisely the most susceptible teeth to suffer from ERR.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the root morphology of maxillary canines and incisors in patients submitted to four premolar extraction and orthodontic retraction of the anterior teeth, by means of 3D surface models superimposition and mapping.
METHODS: The sample consisted of six adult patients, f

Multiple idiopathic external cervical root resorption is a rare condition with numerous predisposing factors that have not yet been clearly elucidated. In addition, its diagnosis and treatment pose challenges for clinicians, and thus, the extraction of the involved teeth is commonly performed. Here, we report a 29-year-old pregnant woman with no contributory medical or family/social history who experienced cervical root resorption that progressed aggressively and involved all permanent teeth. This case is unique owing to the involvement of all teeth. Reports of multiple idiopathic external cer

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the possible factors associated to root resorption, common to daily clinical orthodontics, especially parafunctional habits.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 600 patients (308 females and 292 males) previously treated orthodontically was conducted. The sample was divided into two groups related to the degree of root resorption at the ending of treatment according to Malmgren. Group 1 comprised 507 patients with a mean initial age of 14.21 years and who had absent or mild final external root resorption, characterized by grades 0, 1 and 2 of root

External apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment implicates specific molecular pathways that orchestrate nonphysiologic cellular activation. To date, a substantial number of in vitro and in vivo molecular, genomic, and proteomic studies have supplied data that provide new insights into root resorption. Recent mechanisms and developments reviewed here include the role of the cellular component-specifically, the balance of CD68+, iNOS+ M1- and CD68+, CD163+ M2-like macrophages associated with root resorption and root surface repair processes linked to the expression of the M1-associa

Root resorption of the permanent teeth involves an elaborate interaction among inflammatory cells resulting in loss of dental hard tissues. This report describes three clinical cases where idiopathic root resorption occurred in wind instrument playing patients. These patients produce adequate non-orthodontic forces, while playing their instruments, to expose their teeth to root resorbing force. Careful clinical monitoring of patients' teeth should be undertaken, as the additive effects of orthodontic treatment and musical habits are unknown. CPD/Clinical Relevance: This paper advises that ques

Mechanical force-induced orthodontic root resorption is a major clinical challenge in orthodontic treatment. Macrophages play an important role in orthodontic root resorption, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we examined the mechanism by which the ratio of M1 to M2 macrophage polarization affects root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. Root resorption occurred when nickel-titanium coil springs were applied on the upper first molars of rats for 3 to 14 d. Positively stained odontoclasts or osteoclasts with tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase were found in

BACKGROUND: Physiological root resorption differentiates primary from permanent teeth. The understanding of what protects and regulates root resorption might help to develop therapies to its control.
AIM: To verify the presence and distribution of ECRM and the expression of CK14, OPG, TRAP and COX-2 in the periodontal ligament (PDL) of human primary and permanent teeth. Design. Eight primary teeth undergoing physiological or pathological root resorption and 4 permanent teeth were immunohistochemically processed for CK14, TRAP, COX-2 and OPG expression.
RESULTS: PDL from primary and permanen

Root resorption associated to orthodontic treatment is of multiple etiologies and a non intentional iatrogenic side effect which exists in almost all the orthodontic treatment. This clinical case of an apparently healthy patient illustrates the occurrence during the orthodontic treatment of a root resorption interesting the left central incisor, victims of previous traumatism and presenting a moderate periodontal attachment loss. The orthodontic treatment was carried out with light and continuous forces and a per-orthodontic periodontal maintenance in respect of periodontal requirements. As so

To review studies investigating if genetic factors play a role in external apical root resorption (EARR) during orthodontic treatment. Heritability estimation in human sib-pairs, comparison of multiple inbred mouse strains, human sib-pair linkage and parents-child trio association studies, and two gene (Il-1b, and P2rx7) knock out mouse models. Heritability for EARR of the maxillary central incisors concurrent with orthodontic treatment is 0.8. DBA/2J, BALB/cJ, and 129P3/J inbred mouse strains are highly susceptible (p < .05) to histological root resorption (RR) associated with orthodontic for

A case is presented of inflammatory external root resorption detected on radiographic examination. Conventional endodontic treatment, including calcium hydroxide dressing for two weeks and obturation of the root canal system using the vertical compaction of warm gutta-percha technique was a simple and effective treatment modality for arresting the resorptive process and maintaining the integrity of the patient dentition.

External apical root resorption is a common, yet unexplained, phenomenon associated with orthodontic treatment. Available methods of clinical evaluation are radiographic. Biochemical assays offer the advantage of being non-invasive, as well as being diagnostic and potentially prognostic. The hypotheses are firstly that during the process of root resorption, organic matrix proteins are released into the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and, secondly, that there is a difference in the levels of these proteins between a group of patients with mild root resorption and a control group. GCF was colle

During maxillary permanent canine eruption, the deciduous canine root is selectively resorbed while the adjacent permanent lateral incisor root is left intact. An understanding of this selective resorption could provide insights into the cause of moderate to severe iatrogenic root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. This study investigated the possible role of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in the selective resorption process. The spatial expression patterns of 2 ECM proteins, osteopontin (OPN) and bone sialoprotein (BSP), were assessed within the periodontal ligament (PDL) surr

UNLABELLED: The diagnostic shortcomings encountered in the clinical evaluation of pulpal and periodontal healing subsequent to trauma comprise a major problem in dental traumatology. An acute dental trauma may imply impact to the hard dental tissues and damage to the pulp and periodontium (including surrounding alveolar bone). In the case of luxation injuries, the trauma often results in rupture of the neurovascular supply at the level of the apical foramen, whereas in a root fracture, the same occurs at the level of the fracture. Conventional diagnostic criteria for pulpal status (coronal dis
