Acute gastroenteritis is one of the most common diseases, affecting children worldwide. Viruses are recognized as a major cause of this disease, particularly in children. Since the Norwalk virus was identified as a cause of gastroenteritis, the number of viral agents associated with diarrheal disease in humans has progressively increased. Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea in children under 5 years of age. Human astroviruses, caliciviruses and enteric adenovirus are also important etiologic agents of acute gastroenteritis. Other viruses such as toroviruses, coronaviruses, pi

Rotavirus remains the most common cause of severe, dehydrating diarrhea among children worldwide. Several rotavirus vaccines are under development. Decisions about new vaccine introduction will require reliable data on disease impact. The Asian Rotavirus Surveillance Network, begun in 2000 to facilitate collection of these data, is a regional collaboration of 36 hospitals in nine countries or areas that conduct surveillance for rotavirus hospitalizations using a uniform World Health Organization protocol. We summarize the Network's organization and experience from August 2001 through July 2002

Rotavirus is an ubiquitous virus associated with severe gastro-enteritis in children under 2 years of age. However, serious conditions, including central nervous system involvement, have been associated with rotavirus infection. We investigated the clinical signs and symptoms of rotavirus infection in 156 neonates, specifically focusing on neurological signs. Neurological signs identified were apnoea, jitteriness, convulsions and poor sucking. Of the 156 babies, 66 were rotavirus-positive and 90 rotavirus-negative. In the rotavirus-positive group, 19.7% manifested apnoea compared with 22.2% in

The potential benefit of safe and effective rotavirus vaccination in reducing morbidity and especially mortality from rotavirus gastroenteritis among children in developing countries has long been recognised. More recently, the focus of attention shifted to developed countries, where cost-effectiveness analyses justified the routine introduction of rotavirus vaccines into childhood immunisation schedules. The recent withdrawal in the U.S.A. of the first licensed rotavirus vaccine (the tetravalent rhesus reassortant rotavirus vaccine), following investigation into reports of intussusception amo

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is a form of intestinal obstruction in which a segment of the bowel prolapses into a more distal segment. Our investigation began on May 27, 1999, after nine cases of infants who had intussusception after receiving the tetravalent rhesus-human reassortant rotavirus vaccine (RRV-TV) were reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System.
METHODS: In 19 states, we assessed the potential association between RRV-TV and intussusception among infants at least 1 but less than 12 months old. Infants hospitalized between November 1, 1998, and June 30, 1999, were identi

Reagents were obtained by means of which the method of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was worked out, based on the double sandwich principle, for the demonstration of rotavirus antigen presence in the fecal samples. The reaction makes use of polyvinylchloride plaques that are employed in tablet packing, and enables the rapid quantitative diagnosis of rotaviral enteritis in both animals and humans. The specificity of ELISA has been demonstrated through the comparative investigation of various viruses and bacterial antigens as well as by means of the periodic study of experimental

The segmented genome of Rotavirus alphagastroenteritidis facilitates the emergence of unusual reassortants, increasingly documented in the post-vaccine era. However, their long-term evolutionary dynamics and population-level persistence remain poorly understood. We investigated G1P[8] strains detected through hospital-based surveillance in northern and central Vietnam from 2012 to 2016. Electropherotyping, whole-genome sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses were performed to define genomic constellations and reconstruct evolutionary dynamics of DS-1-like reassortants. We documented four-year ci

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus accounts for an estimated 25% of diarrhoea deaths in children under 5 years globally, and more than 140 countries have included rotavirus vaccines in their routine national infant vaccination programmes. We aimed to calculate rotavirus vaccine effectiveness against rotavirus-positive and all-cause acute gastroenteritis deaths.
METHODS: The Multi-National Subpopulations Study to Evaluate Rotavirus Vaccines (MNSSTER-V) dataset combines child-level data from test-negative case-control studies of rotavirus vaccine effectiveness that enrolled children under 5 years of age see

BACKGROUND: Rwanda introduced pentavalent rotavirus vaccine into its national immunization program in 2012. To determine the long-term impact of rotavirus vaccine on disease burden in a high burden setting, we examined trends in rotavirus and all-cause diarrhea hospitalizations in the first four years following rotavirus vaccine introduction.
METHODS: We used data from an active surveillance system, from a review of pediatric ward registries, and from the Health Management Information System to describe trends in rotavirus and all-cause diarrhea hospitalizations from January 2009 through Dece

Acute rotavirus gastroenteritis can be successfully managed with oral and intravenous rehydration solutions; however, it is still a major cause of childhood mortality and morbidity in developing countries and is responsible for significant morbidity and health-care costs in developed countries. Pentavalent human-bovine rotavirus vaccine (HBRV) is an oral vaccine containing five live attenuated human-bovine reassortant strains containing the human serotypes responsible for the majority of rotavirus cases worldwide. Approximately three-quarters of all acute rotavirus gastroenteritis cases and al

Epidemiologic evidence from Finland indicates a dramatic change in the seasonal pattern of acute diarrhoea over the past 30 years. While in the 1950's the majority of cases occurred in late summer the seasonal peak in the 1970's was in winter and spring, coinciding with the prevalence of rotavirus infections. It is not possible to determine retrospectively the aetiologic agents involved in the summer diarrhoea, but EPEC may have been one of them, as EPEC are quite rare in Finland today compared to the 1950's. Another change over the time period is a shift in the age distribution of acute diarr

BACKGROUND: In November 2011, rotavirus (RV) vaccine was launched in Japan as a voluntary vaccination to prevent RV-associated gastroenterocolitis. We examined the characteristics of intussusception following RV vaccination in our two centers.
METHODS: We investigated intussusception patients <16 years old from January 2006 to September 2020. Patients were categorized according to the period (before [Group A] or after the introduction of arbitrary RV vaccination [Group B]). The patient characteristics and treatment of intussusception were retrospectively investigated.
RESULTS: During the stu

Group A rotaviruses (RVAs) are the major cause of severe acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children under 5 years of age, annually resulting in nearly 130,000 deaths worldwide. Social conditions in developing countries that contribute to decreased oral rehydration and vaccine efficacy and the lack of approved antiviral drugs position RVA as a global health concern. In this minireview, we present an update in the field of antiviral compounds, mainly in relation to the latest findings in RVA virion structure and the viral replication cycle. In turn, we attempt to provide a perspective on the possib

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus results in more diarrhoea-related deaths in children under five years than any other single agent in countries with high childhood mortality. It is also a common cause of diarrhoea-related hospital admissions in countries with low childhood mortality. Rotavirus vaccines that have been prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO) include a monovalent vaccine (RV1; Rotarix, GlaxoSmithKline), a pentavalent vaccine (RV5; RotaTeq, Merck), and, more recently, another monovalent vaccine (Rotavac, Bharat Biotech).

OBJECTIVE: To describe infants with acute gastroenteritis symptoms in primary and secondary care who have the Rotarix vaccine-derived G1P[8] rotavirus strain identified in their stools.
DESIGN: This is a prospective national surveillance conducted by Public Health England (PHE). Rotavirus-positive samples from vaccine-eligible children are routinely submitted to PHE for confirmation, and general practitioners are requested to complete a surveillance questionnaire for all cases. The modified Vesikari Score was used to assess severity of gastroenteritis.
SETTING: England, July 2013-September 2
