Photoelectrochemical oxidation of DNA by ruthenium tris(bipyridine) on a tin oxide nanoparticle electrode.

Selective photoelectrochemical oxidation of DNA was achieved by ruthenium tris(bipyridine) immobilized on a tin oxide nanoparticle electrode. The metal complex was covalently attached to a protein, avidin, which adsorbed strongly on the tin oxide electrode by electrostatic interaction. Upon irradiation with 473-nm light, anodic photocurrent was generated in a blank electrolyte and was enhanced significantly after addition of poly(guanadylic acid) (poly-G) into the electrolyte. The current increased progressively with the nucleotide concentration, suggesting the enhancement effect was related t

A succession of isomers of ruthenium dihydride complexes. Which one is the ketone hydrogenation catalyst?

Reaction of RuHCl(PPh(3))(2)(diamine) (1a, diamine = (R,R)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, (R,R)-dach; 1b, diamine = ethylenediamine, en) with KO(t)Bu in benzene quickly generates solutions of the amido-amine complexes RuH(PPh(3))(2)(NHC(6)H(10)NH(2)), (2a'), and RuH(PPh(3))(2)(NHCH(2)CH(2)NH(2)), (2b'), respectively. These solutions react with dihydrogen to first produce the trans-dihydrides (OC-6-22)-Ru(H)(2)(PPh(3))(2)(diamine) (t,c-3a, t,c-3b). Cold solutions (-20 degrees C) containing trans-dihydride t,c-3a react with acetophenone under Ar to give (S)-1-phenylethanol (63% ee). Complexes t,c-3 hav

The Formation and Stability of Adsorbed Formyl as a Possible Intermediate in Fischer-Tropsch Chemistry on Ruthenium.

Density functional theory has been used to study the formation and stabilization of the chemisorbed formyl species, HCO, on the Ru(001) surface. It has been found that the η1-HCO species attached to a Ru atom by a single Ru-C bond is unstable, and that it will convert to more strongly bound η2- and η3-HCO surface species. These more highly coordinated species decompose readily to produce H(a) and CO(a) via low activation energy reactions, indicating that the observation of HCO(a) species in any bonding mode at temperatures above 90 K is unlikely. Additionally, we found that abstraction of H fr

Mechanism of the hydrogenation of ketones catalyzed by trans-dihydrido(diamine)ruthenium II complexes.

The complexes trans-RuH(Cl)(tmen)(R-binap) (1) and (OC-6-43)-RuH(Cl)(tmen)(PPh(3))(2) (2) are prepared by the reaction of the diamine NH(2)CMe(2)CMe(2)NH(2) (tmen) with RuH(Cl)(PPh(3))(R-binap) and RuH(Cl)(PPh(3))(3), respectively. Reaction of KHB(sec)Bu(3) with 1 yields trans-Ru(H)(2)(R-binap)(tmen) (5) while reaction of KHB(sec)Bu(3) or KO(t)Bu with 2 under Ar yields the new hydridoamido complex RuH(PPh(3))(2)(NH(2)CMe(2)CMe(2)NH) (4). Complex 4 has a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry with the amido nitrogen in the equatorial plane. Loss of H(2) from 5 results in the related complex Ru

Sub-3 nm Ruthenium Nanopatterns Enabled by Pattern Transfer From Supramolecular Dendrimer Templates.

The fabrication of inorganic-based nanopatterns with feature sizes below 3 nm remains a fundamental challenge in nanoscience and advanced manufacturing. Existing approaches, including extreme ultraviolet lithography, block copolymer self-assembly, and colloidal nanocrystal patterning, struggle to reliably achieve such dimensions while maintaining long-range order and structural fidelity. Here, we present a pattern transfer technique from a supramolecular dendrimer templating strategy that enables highly ordered sub-3 nm ruthenium-based nanostructures over large areas (1 µm × 1 µm). The pristin

Phototoxicity evaluation of tetra-cationic ruthenium-arene-phosphine porphyrins in ovarian tumor cells.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a promising strategy for cancer treatment, enabling selective cytotoxicity through light-activated photosensitizers. In this work, four tetra-cationic porphyrins and their zinc(II) metalloporphyrin analogues, each coordinated to four peripheral ruthenium(II) arene-phosphine units, were investigated as a new class of compounds (PRAP: Porphyrin-Ruthenium-Arene-Phosphine). The compounds were fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy (1H, 31P, COSY), UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, elemental ana

Chitosan Oligosaccharide-Functionalized Ruthenium-Curcumin Nanodots for Targeted Therapy of Acute Kidney Injury.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a critical clinical syndrome with high morbidity and mortality, primarily driven by mitochondrial oxidative stress and tubular epithelial cell apoptosis. Current antioxidant therapies are limited by poor bioavailability and lack of renal specificity. To address this, we developed a dual-targeting nanomedicine based on ultrasmall chitosan oligosaccharide-functionalized ruthenium-curcumin nanodots (LMWC/Ru-Cur). METHODS: Ru-Cur coordination polymer nanodots were synthesized and subsequently coated with low-molecular-weight chitosan (LMWC). The nanopartic

Thermodynamics of hydrogen adsorption on ruthenium fcc surfaces: a density functional theory study.

Within the framework of the application of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) to store, transport and re-generate hydrogen, ruthenium (Ru) is by far the most widely used catalyst. In its natural bulk state, the most abundant phase observed is the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase, but experimental studies on nanoparticles have shown that the face-centred cubic (fcc) phases are also present and are highly active in catalytic reactions. In this study, we have carried out calculations based on the density functional theory, with the generalized gradient approximation and long-range dispersi

Single-site ruthenium catalyst supported on zeolite for CO2 hydrogenation to methyl formate.

Technologies for the transformation of atmospheric CO2 to useful chemicals, such as formic acid (FA), are essential to combatting excessive fossil fuel use and will need to be implemented on large scale. However, hydrogenation of CO2 to (base-free) FA is challenging for heterogeneous catalysts, due to the requirement for low temperatures enforced by the entropically unfavorable reaction of gases. By coupling CO2 hydrogenation to esterification, methyl formate (MF) can be prepared as a promising alternative platform chemical. Herein, a robust, heterogeneous single-metal-site catalyst was prepar

Ruthenium Complexes with NNN-Pincer Ligands for N-Methylation of Amines Using Methanol.

A series of ruthenium complexes (Ru1-Ru4) bearing new NNN-pincer ligands were synthesized in 58-78% yields. All of the complexes are air and moisture stable and were characterized by IR, NMR, and high-resolution mass spectra (HRMS). In addition, the structures of Ru1-Ru3 were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These Ru(II) complexes exhibited high catalytic efficiency and broad functional group tolerance in the N-methylation reaction of amines using CH3OH as both the C1 source and solvent. Experimental results indicated that the electronic effect of the substituents on the ligands c

Ligand-enabled ruthenium-catalyzed meta-C-H alkylation of (hetero)aromatic carboxylic acids.

Carboxylates are ideal directing groups because they are widely available, readily cleavable and excellent linchpins for diverse follow-up reactions. However, their use in meta-selective C-H functionalizations remains a substantial unmet catalytic challenge. Herein, we report the ruthenium-catalyzed meta-C-H alkylation of aromatic carboxylic acids with various functionalized alkyl halides. A bidentate N-ligand increases the electron density at the metal center of ortho-benzoate ruthenacycles to the extent that single-electron reductions of alkyl halides can take place. The subsequent addition

Porous Ruthenium-Tungsten-Zinc Nanocages for Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction in Alkali.

With the rapid development of anion exchange membrane technology and the availability of high-performance non-noble metal cathode catalysts in alkaline media, the commercialization of anion exchange membrane fuel cells has become feasible. Currently, anode materials for alkaline anion-exchange membrane fuel cells still rely on platinum-based catalysts, posing a challenge to the development of efficient low-Pt or Pt-free catalysts. Low-cost ruthenium-based anodes are being considered as alternatives to platinum. However, they still suffer from stability issues and strong oxophilicity. Here, we

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Activation of Nonpolar C-C Bonds via π-Coordination-Enabled Aromatization.

Activation of C-C bonds allows editing of molecular skeletons, but methods for selective activation of nonpolar C-C bonds in the absence of a chelation effect or a driving force derived from opening of a strained ring are scarce. Herein, we report a method for ruthenium-catalyzed activation of nonpolar C-C bonds of pro-aromatic compounds by means of π-coordination-enabled aromatization. This method was effective for cleavage of C-C(alkyl) and C-C(aryl) bonds and for ring-opening of spirocyclic compounds, providing an array of benzene-ring-containing products. The isolation of a methyl rutheniu

Preparation of spiroborate supramolecular and peapod polymers containing a photoluminescent ruthenium(ii) complex.

The immobilization of functional metal complexes onto polymer supports remains one of the most important research areas. In this study, we prepared spiroborate supramolecular and peapod polymers containing a cationic photoluminescent ruthenium(ii) complex. The supramolecular polymer was obtained by mixing spiroborate cyclic trimer bearing homoallyl group and a ruthenium(ii) tris(bipyridyl) complex, and was further converted into the corresponding peapod polymer by olefin metathesis polymerization. The structure of these polymers was determined by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, inductively c

Ruthenium-Anchored Carbon Sphere-Customized Sensor for the Selective Amperometric Detection of Melatonin.

Melatonin (MT), a pineal gland hormone, regulates the sleep/wake cycle and is a potential biomarker for neurodegenerative disorders, depression, hypertension, and several cancers, including prostate cancer and hepatocarcinoma. The amperometric detection of MT was achieved using a sensor customized with ruthenium-incorporated carbon spheres (Ru-CS), possessing C- and O-rich catalytically active Ru surfaces. The non-covalent interactions and ion-molecule adducts between Ru and CS favor the formation of heterojunctions at the sensor-analyte interface, thus accelerating the reactions towards MT. T

Synergies of Adjacent Sites in Atomically Dispersed Ruthenium toward Achieving Stable Hydrogen Evolution.

It is a challenge to fabricate atomically dispersed metal clusters in polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) for durable photocatalytic reactions owing to the thermodynamic stability limitation. Herein, atomically dispersed Ru clusters are implanted into the PCN skeleton matrix based on an ionic diffusion and coordination (IDC) strategy, the stability of which is improved owing to the robust Ru-N bonds in the formed RuN4 and RuN3 configurations. Additionally, RuN4 and RuN3 as charge transport bridges between two adjacent melon strands efficaciously conquer hydrogen bond restriction in the skeleton to
