Over-representation of Samoan/Pacific Islanders among patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections at a large family practice clinic in Anchorage, Alaska, 1996-2000.

Two pediatricians in Anchorage observed that among patients of Samoan/Pacific Islander (S/PI) descent, bacterial wound cultures that grew Staphylococcus aureus often yielded methicillin-resistant isolates. The Alaska Section of Epidemiology performed chart reviews of patients that visited a large family practice clinic in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1996 through April 2000, and who were diagnosed with a skin infection. Eight of 204 patients were identified with culture-confirmed MRSA infections. Eighty percent (4 of 5) of S/PI patients had resistant isolates compared with 12% (4 of 34) of non S/PI

Viewing Time and Self-Report Measures of Sexual Attraction in Samoan Cisgender and Transgender Androphilic Males.

Across cultures, androphilic males (natal males who are predominantly sexually attracted to adult men, not women) tend to present in one of two forms: cisgender or transgender. Previous research has shown that, although their gender presentation and identities are distinct, the two forms are similar in many other ways. The present study examined whether cisgender and transgender androphilic males exhibit a similar pattern of self-reported sexual attraction and viewing time response to images of men and women, and one that is directly inverse to that of cisgender gynephilic males (natal males w

Genomic diversity of clinically relevant bacterial pathogens from an acute care hospital in Suva, Fiji.

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat, with third-generation cephalosporin-resistant (3GCR) and carbapenem-resistant infections of particular concern. There is currently a lack of genomic data on AMR organisms in the Pacific region. METHODS: We aimed to address this gap by examining the genetic diversity of a collection of 788 Gram-negative and Gram-positive clinical isolates collected between July 2020 and October 2022 from a single hospital in Suva, Fiji. We sampled sensitive and resistant isolates, focusing on 3GCR and carbapenem-resistant Gram-negatives, and

Advancing progress on tobacco control in low-income and middle-income countries through economic analysis.

BACKGROUND: More than 80% of the world's 1.3 billion tobacco users live in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where progress to address tobacco and its harms has been slow. The perception that tobacco control detracts from economic priorities has impeded progress. The Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is leading the FCTC 2030 project, which includes technical assistance to LMICs to analyse the economic costs of tobacco use and the benefits of tobacco control. METHODS: The Secretariat of the WHO FCTC, United Nations Development Programme and WHO

Adolescent Exposure to Online Advertisements and Promotions for Tobacco Products on the Internet-A Cross-Sectional Analysis of the Global Youth Tobacco Surveys.

PURPOSE: Although many countries have banned tobacco advertising on traditional media platforms, the tobacco industry actively promotes their products via online channels. Adolescents are at high risk of exposure due to spending substantial time online. We examined the prevalence of adolescent exposure to online tobacco advertisements and promotions. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Global Youth Tobacco Surveys (GYTS; 2013-2018; average response rate = 76.8%). We included 15 countries in four regions that measured self-reported exposure to tobacco advertising on the internet in the past mon

Epidemiology of Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika Virus Disease in U.S. States and Territories, 2017.

Dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses, primarily transmitted by Aedes species mosquitoes, have caused large outbreaks in the Americas, leading to travel-associated cases and local mosquito-borne transmission in the United States. We describe the epidemiology of dengue, chikungunya, and noncongenital Zika virus disease cases reported from U.S. states and territories in 2017, including 971 dengue cases, 195 chikungunya cases, and 1,118 Zika virus disease cases. Cases of all three diseases reported from the territories were reported as resulting from local mosquito-borne transmission. Cases repor

A systematic review of historical and contemporary evidence of trachoma endemicity in the Pacific Islands.

INTRODUCTION: Trachoma is endemic in several Pacific Island countries. The aims of this study were to (a) identify future trachoma mapping needs in the Pacific and (b) to examine whether any temporal trends in trachoma prevalence could be ascertained from the historical literature on trachoma in the Pacific Islands. METHODS: Human studies of trachoma and eye care in the Pacific Islands were identified from a systematic search of PubMed, EMbase, Scopus and Web of Science databases. A published quality assessment system for disease prevalence studies was modified to assess studies for quality a

Spatial Risk Factors of Vector-Borne Diseases in Pacific Island Countries and Territories: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesise spatially relevant environmental, demographic, and socio-economic factors associated with vector-borne diseases (VBDs) in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), a region particularly vulnerable due to its ecological and climate diversity. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted in March 2025 with no time restrictions, yielding 3008 records. After applying the inclusion criteria, 21 studies were selected for analysis. Environmental factors such as temperature, precipitation, and land cover were consi

Assessment of Contraceptive Needs and Improving Access in the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands in the Context of Zika.

Scientific evidence demonstrated a causal relationship between Zika virus infection during pregnancy and neurologic abnormalities and other congenital defects. The U.S. government's Zika Virus Disease Contingency Response Plan recognized the importance of preventing unintended pregnancy through access to high-quality family planning services as a primary strategy to reduce adverse Zika-related birth outcomes during the 2016-2017 Zika virus outbreak. The U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) includes three U.S. territories: American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and

First evidence of spatial clustering of lymphatic filariasis in an Aedes polynesiensis endemic area.

Successful elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) requires accurate identification of residual foci of transmission and stringent surveillance strategies to combat potential resurgence. This is challenging in areas where the day-biting Aedes polynesiensis is endemic, such as Samoa, since in previous studies no geographical clustering of infection has been demonstrated. Another challenge for this low prevalence phase is the choice of diagnostic assay as testing for circulating filarial antigen (CFA) or microfilariae (Mf) alone may not have adequate sensitivity. This could be solved by using t

A strong role for the ABCG2 gene in susceptibility to gout in New Zealand Pacific Island and Caucasian, but not Māori, case and control sample sets.

Genetic variation in ABCG2 (rs2231142, Q141K), encoding a uric acid transporter, is associated with gout in diverse populations. The aim of this study was to examine a role for ABCG2 in gout susceptibility in New Zealand Māori, Pacific Island and Caucasian samples. Patients (n = 185, 173 and 214, for Māori, Pacific Island and Caucasian, respectively) satisfied the American College of Rheumatology gout classification criteria. The comparison samples comprised 284, 129 and 562 individuals, respectively, without gout. rs2231142 was genotyped and stratification accounted for using genomic control

[Alfred Th. Leber (1881-1954): a pioneer in tropical ophthalmology. Missing in the South Seas--rediscovered in India].

In spite of the brief duration of German colonial rule during that period tropical medicine enjoyed a remarkable growth and development. This is the first account of the career of the pioneer of tropical ophthalmology, Alfred Theodor Leber (1881-1954); medical history had previously reported him missing in Java after the 1st world war. His career was greatly influenced by his uncle, Theodor Leber (1840-1917), the founder of experimental ophthalmology. Alfred Leber was the one who combined teaching and research in the subjects of ophthalmology and tropical medicine. During his first expedition

A 'conovenomic' analysis of the milked venom from the mollusk-hunting cone snail Conus textile--the pharmacological importance of post-translational modifications.

Cone snail venoms provide a largely untapped source of novel peptide drug leads. To enhance the discovery phase, a detailed comparative proteomic analysis was undertaken on milked venom from the mollusk-hunting cone snail, Conus textile, from three different geographic locations (Hawai'i, American Samoa and Australia's Great Barrier Reef). A novel milked venom conopeptide rich in post-translational modifications was discovered, characterized and named α-conotoxin TxIC. We assign this conopeptide to the 4/7 α-conotoxin family based on the peptide's sequence homology and cDNA pre-propeptide alig

Ciguatera poisoning after ingestion of imported jellyfish: diagnostic application of serum immunoassay.

Ciguatera fish poisoning is an important public health problem wherever humans consume tropical and subtropical fish. It accounts for over half of fish-related poisonings in the United States but is uncommonly diagnosed and underreported. Produced by dinoflagellates, ciguatoxin accumulates up the food chain in herbivorous and carnivorous fishes. Cnidaria jellyfish and related invertebrates) have not previously been associated with direct ciguatera intoxication in humans. We report the first case of ciguatera fish poisoning associated with cnidarian ingestion. A 12-year-old Tongan female presen
