Multi-organism gastrointestinal polymerase chain reaction positivity among pediatric transplant vs non-transplant populations: A single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea is a common problem in the pediatric post-solid organ transplant and post-hematopoietic stem cell transplant populations. Infectious etiology incidences are poorly defined, and the possibility of multi-organism positivity is often uninvestigated. The aim of this study is to utilize stool multiplex GIP assays to compare the PTP and NTP regarding the incidence and profiles of single-organism and multi-organism infectious diarrhea. METHODS: A single-center retrospective review was conducted, investigating stool multiplex GIP panel results over a more than 3-year period, for

Differential removal of human pathogenic viruses from sewage by conventional and ozone treatments.

Sewage contains a mixed ecosystem of diverse sets of microorganisms, including human pathogenic viruses. Little is known about how conventional as well as advanced treatments of sewage, such as ozonation, reduce the environmental spread of viruses. Analyses for viruses were therefore conducted for three weeks in influent, after conventional treatment, after additional ozonation, and after passing an open dam system at a full-scale treatment plant in Knivsta, Sweden. Viruses were concentrated by adsorption to a positively charged filter, from which they were eluted and pelleted by ultracentrifu

High prevalence of community-acquired norovirus gastroenteritis among hospitalized children: a prospective study.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) causes significant morbidity, especially in young children, and frequently requires hospitalization even in developed countries. Surveillance studies of AGE are important to determine the prevalence and variety of bacterial and viral pathogens, to initiate targeted preventive measures, such as vaccine programmes, and to monitor its impact. A prospective study was conducted in children <5 years old, admitted with AGE between April 2006 and April 2007 to the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, Seville, Spain. Demographic and clinical data were collected and patients

Prevalence and Characterization of Gastroenteritis Viruses among Hospitalized Children during a Pilot Rotavirus Vaccine Introduction in Vietnam.

Rotavirus (RV), norovirus (NoV), sapovirus (SaV), and human astrovirus (HAstV) are the most common viral causes of gastroenteritis in children worldwide. From 2016 to 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study to determine the prevalence of these viruses in hospitalized children under five years old in Nam Dinh and Thua Thien Hue provinces in Vietnam during the pilot introduction of the RV vaccine, Rotavin-M1 (POLYVAC, Hanoi, Vietnam). We randomly selected 2317/6718 (34%) acute diarrheal samples from children <5 years of age enrolled at seven sentinel hospitals from December 2016 t

Prevalence and molecular characterization of human noroviruses and sapoviruses in Ethiopia.

Viral gastroenteritis is a major public health problem worldwide. In Ethiopia, very limited studies have been done on the epidemiology of enteropathogenic viruses. The aim of this study was to detect and characterize noroviruses (NoVs) and sapoviruses (SaVs) from acute gastroenteritis patients of all ages. Fecal samples were collected from diarrheic patients (n = 213) in five different health centers in Addis Ababa during June-September 2013. The samples were screened for caliciviruses by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using universal and genogroup-specific primer pai

Prevalence and genetic characterization of caliciviruses among children hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis in the United States.

Human calicivirus was the first recognized viral agent causing gastroenteritis in humans. Norovirus (NV) and Sapovirus (SV), two genera within the Caliciviridae family, cause epidemic and endemic acute gastroenteritis in children and adults. The role of these viruses as a cause of sporadic acute gastroenteritis in young children requiring hospitalization is not well established. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and genetic diversity of caliciviruses among children hospitalized with symptoms of acute gastroenteritis. Stool samples were collected over 2 years from symptomatic c

Incidence and aetiology of diarrhoeal disease among children under five years in the post-rotavirus vaccine introduction era in Manhiça District, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea remains a major cause of death in children under five, despite the global decline in hospitalisations following the widespread introduction of rotavirus vaccines . As rotavirus-associated disease declines, it is important to identify other diarrhoea associated pathogens, although post-vaccine data remain limited in Mozambique. This study aimed to estimate the incidence and determine the aetiology of Moderate-to-Severe Diarrhoea (MSD) and Less Severe Diarrhoea (LSD) among children under five, post-rotavirus vaccine introduction in Manhiça District, a rural setting in Mozam

Associations Between Eight Earth Observation-Derived Climate Variables and Enteropathogen Infection: An Independent Participant Data Meta-Analysis of Surveillance Studies With Broad Spectrum Nucleic Acid Diagnostics.

Diarrheal disease, still a major cause of childhood illness, is caused by numerous, diverse infectious microorganisms, which are differentially sensitive to environmental conditions. Enteropathogen-specific impacts of climate remain underexplored. Results from 15 studies that diagnosed enteropathogens in 64,788 stool samples from 20,760 children in 19 countries were combined. Infection status for 10 common enteropathogens-adenovirus, astrovirus, norovirus, rotavirus, sapovirus, Campylobacter, ETEC, Shigella, Cryptosporidium and Giardia-was matched by date with hydrometeorological variables fro

A Spanish case-control study in <5 year-old children reveals the lack of association between MLB and VA astrovirus and diarrhea.

Novel human astroviruses (HAstV) were discovered 10 years ago and have been associated with fatal cases of central nervous system infections. Their role in gastroenteritis is controversial, as they have been identified in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects. The aim of the study was to investigate novel HAstV in a gastroenteritis case-control study including a pediatric population in Spain over a one-year period. We included stool samples from patients with gastroenteritis and negative results for viruses screened by routine diagnostics, and stool samples of control subjects who sought for a

Single-step RT-PCR assay for dual genotyping of GI and GII norovirus strains.

BACKGROUND: Noroviruses are the major cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in people of all ages globally. Standardized genotyping is key for outbreak investigations and surveillance networks. OBJECTIVE: Here we describe the validation of a one-step conventional RT-PCR assay for sequence-based dual typing of GI and GII noroviruses. This polymerase (P) and capsid (C) dual typing assay uses a combination of previously published oligonucleotide primers amplifying a genomic region spanning the 3'-end of ORF1 and 5'end of ORF2 resulting in a 579 bp product for GI and 570 bp product for GII viruses
