Functional dyspepsia: outcome of focus groups for the development of a questionnaire for symptom assessment in patients suffering from postprandial distress syndrome (PDS).

BACKGROUND: To date, no patient reported outcomes (PRO) instrument is available for evaluation of treatment efficacy in functional dyspepsia (FD)/postprandial distress syndrome (PDS). The aim of our study was to perform focus group interviews for the development of a new questionnaire for assessing symptom pattern and severity in PDS. METHODS: Random ambulatory patients diagnosed with FD/PDS based on Rome III criteria and no predominant gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms were invited to participate. Focus group sessions were organized where patients reported and discussed their

Scintigraphic measurement of gastric emptying and ultrasonographic assessment of antral area: relation to appetite.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound measurement of gastric emptying has potential advantages over scintigraphy, but there is little information about its accuracy. AIMS: The relation between ultrasonographic measurements of antral area and (a) scintigraphic measurements of gastric emptying and intragastric distribution of liquids (b) postprandial satiation, were evaluated. SUBJECTS: Seven normal volunteers were studied. METHOD: Each subject drank 75 g dextrose dissolved in 350 ml of water (300 kcal) or beef soup (20 kcal), both labelled with technetium-99m sulphur colloid on separate days and had measur

Juvenile Firesetting.

Juvenile firesetting is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Male gender, substance use, history of maltreatment, interest in fire, and psychiatric illness are commonly reported risk factors. Interventions that have been shown to be effective in juveniles who set fires include cognitive behavior therapy and educational interventions, whereas satiation has not been shown to be an effective intervention. Forensic assessments can assist the legal community in adjudicating youth with effective interventions. Future studies should focus on consistent assessment and o

Social versus dietary control of ruminating by mentally retarded persons.

The effects of social and nonsocial environments on the maintenance of ruminating were compared. There was no decrease in ruminating in the nonsocial condition for the 4 mentally retarded subjects tested. In addition, results of Rast, Johnston, Drum, and Conrin (1981) and Rast, Johnston, and Drum (1984), who manipulated the quantity of food available to 2 subjects, were replicated. Satiation quantities of starches produced immediate and large decreases in the frequency of ruminating compared to ruminating under standard meal sizes. Parametric decreases in food intake by one subject resulted in

Hunger, satiety, and eating behavior after craniopharyngioma - narrative review on current management and future therapeutic perspectives.

Craniopharyngiomas are low-grade, intracranial tumors frequently associated with dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary axes and the development of obesity. This narrative review aimed to evaluate the potential contribution of eating behaviors, while also identifying perspectives for future therapeutic intervention. Searches were performed across five bibliographic databases. All peer-reviewed published studies involving childhood-onset or adult-onset craniopharyngioma populations were considered eligible when they examined eating behavior in relation to pharmacological or surgical interven

Hunger & satiety signals: another key mechanism involved in the NAFLD pathway.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a highly prevalent metabolic disease, although prevalence could change according to region, nowadays is considered a public health problem whose real impact on the health system is unknown. NAFLD has a multifactorial and complex pathophysiology, due to this, developing a unique and effective pharmacological treatment has not been successful in reverting or avoiding the progression of this liver disease. Even though NAFLD pathophysiology is known, all actual treatments are focused on modifying or regulating the metabolic pathways, some of which inter

An appetite for life: brain regulation of hunger and satiety.

Obesity results from the consumption of food in excess of bodily energy requirements, with the excess energy stored as adipose tissue. Sequelae of obesity, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, consistently rank among the top causes of death worldwide. The global prevalence of obesity highlights the urgency of understanding the mechanisms regulating hunger and satiety. Appetite, defined as the motivational drive to obtain food, is regulated by a complex neurocircuitry which integrates a variety of interoceptive signals to gauge nutritional state and guide appropriate levels of food-seekin

Mechanisms of reduced leptin-mediated satiety signaling during obesity.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Disrupted leptin signaling in vagal afferent neurons contributes to hyperphagia and obesity. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that intrinsic negative regulators of leptin signaling, suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) and protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) underlie dysfunctional leptin-mediated vagal afferent satiety signaling during obesity. METHODS: Experiments were performed on standard chow-fed control mice, high-fat fed (HFF), or low-fat fed (LFF) mice. SOCS3 and PTP1B expression were quantified using western blot and quantitative PCR. Nodose ganglion neu

Anorexia of ageing: a key component in the pathogenesis of both sarcopenia and cachexia.

The anorexia of aging was first recognized as a physiological syndrome 30 years ago. Its major causes are an alteration in fundal compliance with an increase in antral stretch and enhanced cholecystokinin activity leading to increased satiation. This anorexia leads to weight loss in aging persons and is one of the component causes of the aging related sarcopenia. This physiological anorexia also increases the risk of more severe anorexia when an older person has an increase in inflammatory cytokines such as occurs when they have an illness. This results in an increase in the anorexia due to cac

Acquired aversions as the basis for varied diets of ruminants foraging on rangelands.

Ruminants eat an array of plant species that vary in nutrients and toxins. This selection makes intuitive sense, but no theories adequately explain this diversity. Some maintain it reduces the likelihood of overingesting toxins, whereas others contend it meets nutritional needs. Nevertheless, herbivores seek variety even when toxins are not a concern and nutritional needs are met. I offer another explanation for this behavior, one which encompasses the avoidance of toxins and the acquisition of nutrients. A key concept in this theory is aversion, the decrease in preference for food just eaten

Are gut peptides a new class of anorectic agents?

In the past 20 years, the mechanisms of the satiating effect of food that terminate a meal have been investigated intensively in rodents and in humans. This research has revealed that three peptides, cholecystokinin, pancreatic glucagon, and bombesin, released by ingested food from the gastrointestinal tract decrease meal size in a specific, dose-related manner without signs of acute toxicity or tolerance. In humans, the three peptides decrease meal size without decreasing the reported pleasure or satisfaction of the meal. Although their chemical structure and specific effect justify calling t

Indexing reasons for heavy drinking using the Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire in a sample of American Indian adults.

BACKGROUND: To better quantify reasons for high levels of drinking observed among American Indians (AIs) who drink, we measured drinking behaviors in a sample of AI adults using the Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire (ACQ). METHODS: The sample consisted of 549 AI adults (54.8% female; average age = 31.7 years [standard deviation = 13.7]) living on reservations. Logistic regression models assessed associations of mean scale scores with lifetime alcohol use disorders (AUDs), adjusting for key demographics. RESULTS: Respondents were stratified by the amount of alcohol needed to feel they had "en

Stress-induced eating in rural adolescents: Unique variability among boys and adolescents with obesity.

Stress may contribute to the development of obesity through its effects on dysregulated eating, although this has not yet been examined among low-income, rural adolescents. We examined adolescents' stress-induced changes in eating an ad libitum meal, and after, in the absence of hunger (EAH), and the extent to which these varied by sex, race, and weight status. Participants included 260 adolescents, drawn from a sample of rural households experiencing poverty. Adolescents completed two home visits while salivary cortisol was measured; during the control (low stress) visit, they completed quest

The Hunger Games: Using hunger to promote healthy choices in self-control conflicts.

The majority of existing research and conventional wisdom would advise against shopping on an empty stomach as hunger is assumed to encourage impulsive choices that typically lead to self-control failure (i.e., favouring short-term gratifications at the expense of long-term goals). Nonetheless, through two studies the current research aims to demonstrate that hungry consumers would not always be disadvantaged when encountering a self-control conflict involving a trade-off choice between a healthy vs. a more palatable but unhealthy choice. Particularly we posit that the choice outcome of the se

Ceramide accumulation and up-regulation of proinflammatory interleukin-1β exemplify lipotoxicity to mediate declines of reproductive efficacy of broiler hens.

The study was conducted to delineate fundamental mechanisms that initiate the deleterious effect of fuel overloading on reproductive efficacy of broiler breeder hens. Sixty hens at age 26 wk were fed recommended amounts of feed (160 g/d per hen) or allowed voluntary feeding (approximately 30% more than restriction). At age 35 and 50 wk, hens were sampled for further analyzes. Voluntary feeding resulted in poor egg production, high rate of mortality, and abnormal ovarian structure (mainly overt hierarchical follicle atresia at age 35 wk and ovarian involution at age 50 wk). In contrast to feed-

Smoking abstinence effects on emotion dysregulation in adult cigarette smokers with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is robustly associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but little is known about psychological mechanisms accounting for this comorbid relationship. This study examined difficulties in emotion regulation, or emotion dysregulation, among adult cigarette smokers with and without ADHD. Emotion dysregulation was predicted to be higher in an ADHD group at screening and after 24 -h smoking abstinence compared to a non-ADHD group. METHODS: Cigarette smokers with (n = 19) and without (n = 20) ADHD completed a screening visit, baseline visit, and two

Processing of food pictures: influence of hunger, gender and calorie content.

In most cases obesity, a major risk factor for diabetes mellitus type 2 and other associated chronic diseases, is generated by excessive eating. For a better understanding of eating behavior, it is necessary to determine how it is modulated by factors such as the calorie content of food, satiety and gender. Twelve healthy normal weighted participants (six female) were investigated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. In order to prevent the influence of social acceptability, an implicit one-back task was chosen for stimulus presentation. We presented food (high- and low-cal

Contrasting Aquaculture Systems Shape Distinct Growth and Short-Term Stress-Resistance Trait Clusters in the Red Swamp Crayfish.

This study investigated whether these contrasting environments are associated with the development of coherent, organism-wide phenotypic-physiological syndromes reflecting a fundamental life-history trade-off. A controlled 60-day trial was conducted comparing crayfish from a high-input pond system (fed to satiation) and a low-input rice paddy system (primarily natural diet). Pond crayfish were fed a commercial formulated feed twice daily to satiation (approximately 3% of biomass per day). Rice paddy crayfish primarily consumed natural food webs and received a once-daily supplement of 30% of th
