Twenty-four patients with Scheuermann's kyphosis underwent correction of the deformity through a combined anterior and posterior spine fusion. All patients had a solid arthrodesis and most were relieved of their preoperative pain. Deformity was improved in all patients. Significant loss of correction did not occur in the fusion area but it did occur below the posterior arthrodesis in five patients.

STUDY DESIGN: This study compared preoperative and postoperative saggittal curves and spinal balance in patients undergoing spinal fusion with Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation for severe kyphosis secondary to Scheuermann's disease. Also determined was patient satisfaction regarding relief of pain and correction of the deformity. Thirty two patients with kyphosis > 75 degrees underwent spinal fusion with Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the initial and long-term correction of the primary kyphosis and changes in lumbar lordosis and sagittal balance, and to determine the

BACKGROUND: Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) is a spinal deformity characterized by exaggerated kyphosis, frequently requiring surgical correction. Selection of the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) is critical in optimizing outcomes, with options including the stable sagittal vertebra (SSV) and first lordotic vertebra (FLV). This systematic review evaluates the clinico-radiological outcomes and complications associated with SSV and FLV as LIVs.
METHODS: A systematic review were conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Seven studies comprising 311 patients (142 in the SSV group and 169 in the FLV gro

RATIONALE: Craniosynostosis is a disorder characterized by premature fusion of cranial sutures with subsequent development of abnormal craniofacial contour associated with variable skeletal and extra-skeletal abnormalities. In this family syndromic type of craniosynostosis was recognized and the etiology behind diverse forms of deformities have been diagnosed.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The negative impact of the disorder on the child and his family is enormous. Particularly when the diagnosis is late and little can be done. Though counselling the family through discussing the whole picture of the dis

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous connective tissue disorder characterized by increased bone fragility and a series of extraskeletal manifestations. Approximately 90 % of OI cases are caused by type I collagen variants encoded by the collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) or type I alpha 2 (COL1A2) gene. Lumbar Scheuermann's disease is an atypical type of Scheuermann's disease accompanied by Schmorl's nodes and irregular endplates but without pronounced kyphosis. Although the etiology of Scheuermann's disease is unclear, genetic and environmental factors are likely.

BACKGROUND: There are only a few studies on untreated Scheuermann's disease and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in the lumbar spine. The primary aim of this study was to clarify lumbar MRI findings in patients with Scheuermann's disease and to compare with subjects without diagnosed spine disease.
METHODS: Twenty-two male adult Scheuermann's patients (mean age 64.7 years (Standard Deviation [SD] 6.4) and 26 males (mean age 59.7 years [SD 7.4]) from a national health survey were included in this study. From MR images, the dimensions of the vertebral bodies, intervertebral discs and t

Basing on the experience collected with the breathable plaster-of-Paris jacket described by Koch in 1926 for treating the dorsal type of Scheuermann's disease, we developed two breathable and removable ortheses (Brakeler's jacket and Istanbul jacket). The biomechanical principles action of these jackets were examined both by calculation and clinically as well as roentgenologically.

A given population was followed by authors for 10 years. Children suffering from postural defects, structural scoliosis, spinal osteochondrosis were separated from a normal group. Spinal mobility and posture were compared with the mobility of normal, healthy boys and girls aged 5-14 years. In postural defects physiologically curves could be seen. The range of motion hasn't been physiologic in structural scoliosis. The rotation and flexion of the spine were increased while the lumbar flexion was decreased. Physiologic trend was found in Scheuermann disease, however high values of spinal rotatio

STUDY DESIGN: A case report.
OBJECTIVE: To report an unusual neurologic complication caused by traumatic disc herniation through atypical posterior Schmorl's node (SN) opening into the spinal canal in lumbar Scheuermann's disease.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Neurologic complications in Scheuermann's disease are rare and disc hernia has been reported as one of the causes of neural compression. However, there has been no report on acutely progressing paraplegia caused by traumatic disc herniation through an atypical posterior SN opening into the spinal canal in lumbar Scheuermann's disease.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) are the most common types of spinal deformities in adolescents, and both have substantial ramifications on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) parameters. Various questionnaires have been developed to assess HRQoL in age-group populations with spinal deformity. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of consensus across the literature as to which instrument is the most suitable for evaluating the HRQoL of this cohort. Thus, this literature review was conducted to present disease-specific questionnaires for children and adolesc

STUDY DESIGN: Case report and review of the literature.
OBJECTIVE: This case illustrates the importance of the costosternal complex in maintaining the stability and alignment of the thoracic spine. The patient was iatrogenically destabilized by placement of a pectus bar leading to rapid symptomatic progression of his Scheuermann's kyphosis, ultimately requiring surgical correction.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Scheuermann's kyphosis is a disease process defined by strict radiographical and clinical criteria. Surgical treatment is generally recommended for curves greater than 75°. This case de

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional and follow-up nested study.
PURPOSE: To assess the reliability of the L5-kyphosis apex line (L5-KAL) evaluation and determine the association between changes in L5-KAL, changes in radiological parameters, and changes in clinical symptoms.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Scheuermann's disease is the most common cause of hyperkyphosis of the thoracolumbar and thoracic spine during adolescence. Scheuermann's disease patients usually show compensatory hyperlordosis of the lumbar spine, which is usually flexible, and express an anterior translation of the lumbar section. The

BACKGROUND: There is insufficient knowledge of the epidemiology of Scheuermann's disease. The data available comes from estimations from young adults with obvious deformity, from studies evaluating children who may not have developed the deformity yet, or from older populations who can develop vertebral wedging secondary to other causes. We aimed to determine the prevalence of Scheuermann's disease in patients 15-40 years old using plain chest radiographs as a screening tool.
METHODS: We evaluated 454 patients aged 15-40 years old studied using standing plain chest radiographs. We measured th

STUDY DESIGN: A cadaveric survey of the thoracic spines of extant species of nonbipedal primates for the presence of Scheuermann kyphosis.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence and prevalence of Scheuermann kyphosis in quadrupedal species of the closest living relatives to humans to demonstrate that bipedalism is not an absolute requirement for the development of Scheuermann kyphosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The etiology of Scheuermann kyphosis remains poorly understood. Biomechanical factors associated with upright posture are thought to play a role in the development of the disorder. To

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to establish a cohort of symptomatic twins with Scheuermann kyphosis to provide estimates of prevalence, concordance, odds ratio, and heritability. These estimates indicate to what extent genetic factors contribute to the etiology of this disease.
METHODS: The Odense-based Danish Twin Registry is unique in that it contains data on all 73,000 twin pairs born in Denmark over the last 130 years. For the present study, all 46,418 twins born from 1931 through 1982 received a seventeen-page questionnaire, in which one question was "Have you been diagnosed w

Scheuermann's disease of the thoracic spine is a well-defined entity, although its exact etiology is unknown. In the thoracolumbar or lumbar spine however, the criteria are much less strict for the application of this eponym. A retrospective review of all the cases of lumbar Scheuermann's disease seen at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital revealed two distinct radiographic pictures. These consisted of a "classic" Scheuermann's and an "atypical" type characterized by vertebral end plate changes, disc space narrowing, and anterior Schmorl's nodes, but not otherwise fulfilling Sorenson's criteria.
