Epidemiology of Irritable Hip in Western Scotland: A Follow-Up Study.

Background A 'limping child' commonly presents to the emergency department (ED). In the absence of trauma, many are diagnosed with irritable hip (IH). The aetiology of IH is not well understood and there may be geographical and seasonal variations. We previously established one year (2016) epidemiological data of IH presenting to the Royal Hospital for Children (RHCG) ED in Glasgow, Scotland. The sentinel findings in that year were (i) an age distribution shift to younger (peak at two years of age), (ii) no marked association with social class, and (iii) a spring preponderance. We sought to st

Toxoplasma gondii coinfection with diseases and parasites in wild rabbits in Scotland.

In wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) on an estate in Perthshire, central Scotland, the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii was 18/548 (3·3%). The wild rabbit could be a T. gondii reservoir and it has potential value as a sentinel of T. gondii in environmental substrates. Toxoplasma gondii was associated with female sex (P < 0·001) and with relatively heavy infections by Eimeria stiedae (P = 0·036). It was not associated with the intensity of coccidial oocysts, the severity of myxomatosis caused by the virus Myxomatosis cuniculi, the intensity of roundworm eggs, the year or season, rabbit ag

An investigation of anthelmintic efficacy against strongyles on equine yards in Scotland.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Cyathostomins comprise 50 helminth species, considered the most problematic equine endoparasites. Three classes of anthelmintic are currently licensed for their control, namely the benzimidazoles (fenbendazole), tetrahydropyrimidines (pyrantel) and macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin and moxidectin). Anthelmintic resistance in cyathostomins is common. With no new classes expected in the near future, it is essential to determine the efficacy of the available anthelmintics to inform future control programmes. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of all 3 anthelmintic

Monitoring agricultural rodenticide use and secondary exposure of raptors in Scotland.

Despite the documented risk of secondary poisoning to non-target species by anticoagulant rodenticides there is no statutory post-approval monitoring of their use in the UK. This paper presents results from two Scottish monitoring schemes for the period 2000-2010; recording rodenticide use on arable farms and the presence of residues in raptor carcasses. More than three quarters of arable farms used anticoagulant rodenticides; predominately the second generation compounds difenacoum and bromadiolone. There was widespread exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in liver tissues of the raptor spe

Changing trends in keratoplasty in the West of Scotland: a 10-year review.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To review the indications and types of keratoplasty performed in the West of Scotland between 2001 and 2010. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the histopathological diagnoses of all corneal buttons submitted to the regional Ocular Pathology Laboratory (Glasgow, UK) between January 2001 and December 2010 was performed. RESULTS: Between 2001 and 2010, a total of 921 keratoplasties were performed in the West of Scotland. These included 646 (70.1%) penetrating keratoplasties and 275 (29.9%) lamellar keratoplasties (LK). Keratoconus (n=264, 28.7%) was the leading indication fo

The epidemiology of multiple sclerosis in Scotland: inferences from hospital admissions.

BackgroundMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disorder with a highly characteristic disease distribution. Prevalence and incidence in general increase with increasing distance from the equator. Similarly the female to male sex ratio increases with increasing latitude. Multiple possible risk factors have been hypothesised for this epidemiological trend, including human leukocyte antigen allele frequencies, ultraviolet exposure and subsequent vitamin D levels, smoking and Epstein-Barr virus. In this study we undertook a study of medical records across Scotland on an NHS health board level

Prevalence of Bartonella species, haemoplasmas and Toxoplasma gondii in cats in Scotland.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence rates for select infectious agents of cats presented to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Whole blood, serum, and oral mucosal and nail bed swabs were collected. While Ehrlichia species, Anaplasma species or Rickettsia felis DNA were not amplified from any cat, 44.2% of the cats had evidence of infection or exposure to either a Bartonella species (15.3% were seropositive and 5.8% polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive), a haemoplasma (28.6% PCR positive), and/or Toxoplasma gondii

Glimpses of a hidden burden: hydatid disease in eighteenth-century Scotland.

"Hydatids" or watery cysts have been observed in animals and humans since ancient times, giving rise to frequent speculation as to their nature and origin. This essay focuses on an extremely rare clinical case managed at the Edinburgh Infirmary in 1785 by James Gregory, professor of the theory of medicine. Following the death of the patient, an autopsy disclosed lesions characteristic of a condition eventually labeled "echinococcosis of the liver," today one of the most common parasitic diseases in sheep raising regions of the world. The essay reviews the obscure nature of this endemic disease

HIV-1 subtype in Scotland: the establishment of a national surveillance system.

Historically, subtype B viruses in men who have sex with men (MSM) and injecting drug users (IDU) dominated the HIV epidemic in the United Kingdom, whereas non-B heterosexual infections dominate globally. Heterosexual contact is now the most common route of transmission in the United Kingdom. Here we monitor HIV subtype in Scotland, and link it to origin of infection. HIV-1 sequence was generated from new diagnoses and the subtype thus obtained linked with demographic data. Virus was subtyped from 80% (137/171) of all new diagnoses in Scotland. Of 58 individuals infected by heterosexual contac
