Higher recreational screen time and lower step count are associated with higher cardiovascular disease risk in early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for developing behaviors that affect lifelong cardiovascular health. While physical activity improves cardiovascular outcomes, excessive recreational screen time is linked to negative cardiovascular indicators. This study examined associations between screen time and physical activity with cardiovascular risk factors in a large, diverse sample of early adolescents. METHODS: This study included 4,443 adolescents from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study collected at Year 2 (2018–2020) and Year 4 (2020–2022). Screen time was self-re

Replication of acne susceptibility loci and gene-environment interactions with screen time in Singapore and Malaysia Chinese population.

Acne vulgaris is a common chronic inflammatory skin disorder with a substantial genetic contribution. However, replication of findings from genome-wide association studies across diverse populations remains limited. In this study, we evaluated 88 previously reported acne-associated variants in 2741 acne cases and 2235 controls from the Singapore/Malaysia Cross-sequential Genetic Epidemiology Study. Two association signals were replicated at Bonferroni-corrected significance: rs1159268 near TGFB2 at 1q41 and rs738409 in the PNPLA3 coding region at 22q13.31, with consistent directions of effect.

Impact of screen use on tear breakup time: associations with ophthalmological factors and break frequency in office workers.

PURPOSE: To examine how ophthalmological features, screen exposure duration, and break habits among office employees affect ocular surface parameters. METHODS: This single-center cross-sectional study involved two assessments on the same day: one before and one after a visual display terminal task. During the initial assessment, information on screen use was gathered, and refractive error, anterior segment examination, tear breakup time, and Schirmer test measurements were conducted. Participants tracked their screen usage and break durations throughout the day. At the end of the workday, tea

Positive ADHD Scores are Associated With Higher Screen Time and Anxiety Symptoms in Medical Students: Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) refers to a set of symptoms, such as an inability to sustain attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, with a prevalence of 2.0% for the general population. Approximately 2.7% of American medical students report having some form of disability, with ADHD emerging as the most frequently self-disclosed condition. Medical students with a positive ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) score present more depression symptoms in comparison with those with a negative ASRS score. Previous studies suggest that a low amount of time spent in physical act

Physical activity and screen time: prospective associations with child emotional and behavioral well-being during the COVID pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST) were examined longitudinally over 66 months to evaluate their association with child emotional and behavioral health during the early months of the COVID pandemic. METHODS: Data are from 288 racially/ethnically diverse low-income children ages 2-4 years enrolled in the NET- Works studies (2012-2020). Baseline, 12-, 24-, 36- and 66-month measures of PA and ST were collected before the onset of the COVID pandemic. During the pandemic shutdown, parents completed a measure of their child's emotional and behavioral health (Strengths and Diffi

Associations among screen time, depressive symptoms and sleep in early adolescents: A sex-disaggregated cross-lagged network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has established associations among screen time, depressive symptoms, and sleep. However, the nuances of these associations, particularly regarding directionality and sex-specific differences among early adolescents, remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate sex differences in the longitudinal associations among screen time, depressive symptoms, and sleep at the symptom level during early adolescence. METHODS: Our cohort consisted of 2987 students (1451 boys at T1; Mage = 10.52 years), who were assessed twice over six-month intervals. Sex-stra

Screen time reduction and Surya Namaskars-a comprehensive intervention for nonspecific back pain in adolescents: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that excessive screen time exposure and a lack of physical exercise are associated with nonspecific back pain in adolescents. Reduced screen time exposure and Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutations) have physical and psychological benefits. We aim to test a novel comprehensive school-based intervention module-Screen time reduction and Surya Namaskars (SanSKAR) for reducing the proportion of school-going adolescents reporting nonspecific back pain. The word "sanskar" originates in Sanskrit and roughly means good values or actions. METHODS: The study will be conducted i

Association of physical activity and screen time with cardiovascular disease risk in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: According to the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Scientific Report, limited evidence is available on sedentary behaviors (screen time) and their joint associations with physical activity (steps) for cardiovascular health in adolescence. The objective of this study was to identify joint associations of screen time and physical activity categories with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (blood pressure, hemoglobin A1c, cholesterol) in adolescence. METHODS: This study analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, comprising a diver

Effect of screen time intervention on obesity among children and adolescent: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies.

Several studies have investigated the effect of screen time interventions on obesity in children and adolescents, but the existing results were controversial. This study aimed to analyze the effect of screen time intervention on obesity in children and adolescents. PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Embase databases were searched through December 2020 to identify publications meeting a priori inclusion criteria and references in the published articles were also reviewed. Finally, 14 randomized controlled trials and 1894 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that inter

Associations of Sleep Duration and Screen Time with Incidence of Overweight in European Children: The IDEFICS/I.Family Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decades, children have been increasingly using screen devices, while at the same time their sleep duration has decreased. Both behaviors have been associated with excess weight, and it is possible they act as mutually reinforcing behaviors for weight gain. The aim of the study was to explore independent, prospective associations of screen time and sleep duration with incident overweight in a sample of European children. METHODS: Data from 4,285 children of the IDEFICS/I.Family cohort who were followed up from 2009/2010 to 2013/2014 were analyzed. Hours per day of s

Independent and combined influences of physical activity, screen time, and sleep quality on adiposity indicators in Indian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate physical activity (PA), excess screen time (ST), and sub-optimal sleep quality tend to co-occur during adolescence. Yet, little is known about the associations of these behaviors as a cluster with adiposity indicators in Indian adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate the independent and combined influences of PA, ST, and sleep quality on body mass index (BMI) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) in 10-15 years old adolescents in Mumbai, India. A secondary aim was to explore if these influences vary between sexes. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Adolescents (n = 772, mean

The role of motivation on physical activity and screen time behaviors among parent-adolescent dyads: The FLASHE study.

Behavioral theories inform the development of lifestyle interventions to address low participation in physical activity (PA); however, relatively little is known about the value of self-determination theory (SDT) for explaining screen time (ST) behaviors or in extending SDT into a dyadic context. Actor-partner (i.e., parent-adolescent) interdependence models (APIMs) allow for examination of these interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this study was to examine PA and ST among parent-adolescent dyads using the cross-sectional Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) Study. P

Beyond Screen Time: A Synergistic Approach to a More Comprehensive Assessment of Family Media Exposure During Early Childhood.

Digital media availability has surged over the past decade. Because of a lack of comprehensive measurement tools, this rapid growth in access to digital media is accompanied by a scarcity of research examining the family media context and sociocognitive outcomes. There is also little cross-cultural research in families with young children. Modern media are mobile, interactive, and often short in duration, making them difficult to remember when caregivers respond to surveys about media use. The Comprehensive Assessment of Family Media Exposure (CAFE) Consortium has developed a novel tool to mea

When is the optimal time to screen for Chlamydia in adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease?

OBJECTIVES: Louisiana has a high rate of chlamydia, an easily identifiable and treatable sexually transmitted disease. Patients with chronic diseases, such as sickle cell disease (SCD) often forgo routine primary care visits. We hypothesized that patients with SCD have an increased percentage of asymptomatic chlamydia compared with a matched population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed over a 12-month period on eligible patients with SCD (ages 15-30 years). Patients were screened for asymptomatic chlamydia by urine polymerase chain reaction during comprehensive care visits

Population level screening for celiac disease: is now the time?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As incidence and prevalence of celiac disease is increasing, subclinical and asymptomatic presentations are more commonly identified through celiac disease screening. However, the United States Preventive Services Task Force released a statement in 2017 maintaining that there is insufficient evidence to recommend general population screening for celiac disease for asymptomatic individuals. This review summarizes the current available evidence on celiac disease screening. RECENT FINDINGS: Literature demonstrates that by limiting screening to individuals with recognized sympt

It is about time. The advantage of transabdominal cervical length screening.

PURPOSE: Sonographic cervical length (CL) measurement has become a standard practice for identifying women at increased risk for preterm birth. We aimed to assess the time needed for CL measurement during fetal anatomy scan using either transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasound, and to provide a predictive value of the transabdominal CL measurements for reassuring transvaginal CL measurements of more than 25 mm. METHODS: In a prospective study we measured CL transabdominally, and transvaginally in all the anatomy scans performed at 18-25 weeks' gestation, from January 2017 until January 2018.

Is it the right time for an infant screening for Duchenne muscular dystrophy?

Newborn screening (NBS) is an essential, preventive public health programme for early identification of disorders whose early treatment can lead to significant reduction in morbidity and mortality. NBS for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) has been a controversial matter for many years, because of false positives, the lack of effective drugs and the need of more data about screening efficacy. The still high diagnostic delay of DMD and the current availability of drugs such as steroid, ataluren, eteplirsen, golodirsen and forthcoming new drugs, improving the clinical conditions if early started

Is it time for routine prenatal serological screening for congenital cytomegalovirus?

Congenital CMV infection (cCMV) is the most prevalent congenital infection, main non-genetic cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and major cause of neurological disability. Despite the burden of cCMV, no Public Health body recommends universal serology screening in pregnancy. This was explained by gaps in knowledge of epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis and the absence of any validated treatment. Over 10 years, progress has been made in our understanding of cCMV following primary maternal infection. Risk factors have been identified and quantified, notably it is now well recognized that
