Brain Responses to a Self-Compassion Induction in Trauma Survivors With and Without Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Self-compassion (SC) is a mechanism of symptom improvement in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), however, the underlying neurobiological processes are not well understood. High levels of self-compassion are associated with reduced activation of the threat response system. Physiological threat responses to trauma reminders and increased arousal are key symptoms which are maintained by negative appraisals of the self and self-blame. Moreover, PTSD has been consistently associated with functional changes implicated in the brain's saliency and the default mode networks. In this paper, we explo

Moderating Role of Self-Compassion in the Relationships Between the Three Forms of Perfectionism with Anger, Aggression, and Hostility.

The prevalence of aggression in adolescents is on the rise, and it could be a serious public health concern. Studies have found positive relationships between perfectionism with anger, aggression, and hostility. However, the moderating role of self-compassion in the links between perfectionism with anger, aggression, and hostility has not been studied. To better understand the relationships between the three forms of perfectionism with anger, aggression, and hostility, this study aimed to explore the moderating role of self-compassion. Participants were 380 undergraduates selected using a mult

The roles of negative emotion intensity, negative emotion differentiation, and self-compassion in loss of control eating.

OBJECTIVE: Negative affect intensity is robustly related to binge eating, but the relationship between negative emotion differentiation (i.e., the ability to differentiate negatively-valenced emotions) and binge eating is unclear. Further, little is known about factors that might reduce emotion intensity and/or enhance emotion differentiation, thereby reducing binge eating. Self-compassion is consistently linked to less binge eating, which may be due to decreased negative affect and/or an enhanced ability to differentiate emotions. The current study examined the roles of negative emotion inten

A Longitudinal Investigation on the Relation between Self-Compassion and Alcohol Use in a Treatment Sample: A Brief Report.

Alcohol misuse is often a chronic problem such that relapses following treatment are common. One potential protective factor for alcohol misuse is self-compassion, which includes self-kindness, feelings of common humanity, and mindfulness when faced with personal suffering and hardships. This study tested the hypothesis that self-compassion, and specifically self-compassion promoting facets including self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, were longitudinally associated with reduced alcohol use among a sample of men and women in substance use disorder treatment (N = 62). Results parti

Soothing Your Heart and Feeling Connected: A New Experimental Paradigm to Study the Benefits of Self-Compassion.

Self-compassion and its cultivation in psychological interventions are associated with improved mental health and well-being. However, the underlying processes for this are not well understood. We randomly assigned 135 participants to study the effect of two short-term self-compassion exercises on self-reported-state mood and psychophysiological responses compared to three control conditions of negative (rumination), neutral, and positive (excitement) valence. Increased self-reported-state self-compassion, affiliative affect, and decreased self-criticism were found after both self-compassion e

The new first listener: Daydreaming styles and self-compassion predict adolescent disclosure to AI, differently in ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: AI chatbots are increasingly becoming a first common point of mental health disclosure for adolescents, suggesting a potential 'Step 0' within stepped-care pathways prior access to professional help. This study examined how daydreaming styles and self-compassion relate to adolescents' disclosure of inner thoughts to an AI 'listener', and whether these psychological processes differ among young people with ADHD, for whom spontaneous mind wandering and attentional control difficulties may be especially salient. DESIGN: A large-scale cross-sectional online survey was conducted with ad

Does social support always help? Emotion regulation pathways through self-compassion in maltreated adolescents' PTSD and growth.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents exposed to childhood maltreatment often experience co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG). Perceived social support may influence these outcomes through emotion regulation strategies, yet its effects can be both protective and paradoxical. Self-compassion, comprising positive and negative dimensions, has been conceptualized as an emotion regulation strategy that may mediate these relationships. METHODS: A two-wave longitudinal design with a six-month interval was employed. Participants were 1,773 Chinese adolescents (52.3% fema

Exploring Mental Health, Self-Compassion and Support in New Parents of Children With Disabilities vs. Nondisabled Children.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to determine whether the type of disability (intellectual, motor, hearing, or autism spectrum) differentiates mental health, parental stress, self-compassion and perceived support among parents of children aged 0-7 years. METHODS: The study took place anonymously from February to May 2023 using online questionnaires. Instruments such as GHQ-12, PSS-10, PSI-4-SF, Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and MSPSS were used to assess mental health, parental stress, self-compassion and social support. Tools were translated, adapted and reliability tested for Polish conditions. RE

Desistance from physical abuse in a national study of Nepal: Protective informal social control and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Research on the conditions under which perpetrators desist from child maltreatment has seen greater attention as part of the efforts to break the cycle of maltreatment. New theoretical insights suggest that informal actions (herein protective informal social control of child maltreatment) by network members which communicate warmth, empathy with victim distress, and promote the modeling of positive parenting practices are more likely to increase maltreatment desistance. Likewise, parents' desistance from maltreatment is theorized to impact on adolescents' (victim) cognition and sel

[Self-compassion and secondary traumatization: results of an observational study carried out in Covid hospital ordinary units].

Introduction. The relationship between Self-compassion and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder does not appear to be investigated among health professionals, in the period of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This study intends to examine it in a hospital unit, where ordinary units have been converted into units for those infected with the virus. Materials and Methods. The cross-sectional observational study was carried out at a hospital in Central Italy, proposing the self-administration of the IES-R Impact Event Stress-Revised and SCS Self-Compassion Scale to nurses. The data were collected, from 10

The relationships between self-compassion, rumination, and depressive symptoms among older adults: the moderating role of gender.

OBJECTIVES: Depression is a significant mental health issue for older adults. Rumination is a key risk factor for depressive symptoms, and self-compassion is a protective factor. The aim of the current study was to test the processes by which self-compassion might act as a protective factor among older adults by investigating a mediation model, and whether the model is conditional on gender. It was hypothesised that self-compassion and its six components (self-kindness, common humanity, mindfulness, self-judgement, isolation, and over-identification) would be indirectly associated with depress

Childhood maltreatment on young adult depression: A moderated mediation model of negative automatic thoughts and self-compassion.

This study examines the mediating role of negative automatic thoughts on the link between childhood maltreatment and young adult depression, and the moderating role of self-compassion in this indirect link. College students (N = 578) completed self-report questionnaires assessing the mentioned study variables. The results showed that childhood maltreatment was positively associated with young adult depression via negative automatic thoughts. Moreover, self-compassion moderated this indirect link such that participants with low self-compassion demonstrated a stronger indirect link than those wi

Bullying victimization and depression among left-behind children in rural China: Roles of self-compassion and hope.

BACKGROUND: Bullying victimization among school-aged children is an important public health issue that may affect their well-being and mental health. However, few studies have been conducted on left-behind children in rural China, who are defined as the children who stay in rural areas for more than six months and have one or both parents migrating to urban areas for work. The mechanisms through which bullying victimization will influence depression have disproportionally adopted a psychopathological perspective, and the protective factors are understudied. OBJECTIVE: This study aims at inves

Moral injury and suicidality among combat-wounded veterans: The moderating effects of social connectedness and self-compassion.

OBJECTIVE: Among combat veterans, moral injury (i.e., the guilt, shame, inability to forgive one's self and others, and social withdrawal associated with one's involvement in events that occurred during war or other missions) is associated with a host of negative mental health symptoms, including suicide. To better inform and tailor prevention and treatment efforts among veterans, the present study examined several potential risk (i.e., overidentification and self-judgment) and protective (i.e., self-kindness, mindfulness, common humanity, and social connectedness) variables that may moderate

Self-compassion directly and indirectly predicts dietary adherence and quality of life among adults with celiac disease.

Strict adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only treatment for preventing both short- and long-term consequences of celiac disease. Given that following a strict GFD can be difficult, evidence-based strategies are needed to improve the psychological experience of living with celiac disease and following the GFD. Self-compassion appears to be an important component of effectively self-regulating one's behavior to cope with a chronic disease. The main goal of this study was to examine the relationships between self-compassion and management of celiac disease as assessed by (a) adherence

Psychological flexibility and self-compassion buffer the impact of shame on depression among adults with physical disabilities.

Individuals with physical disabilities experience higher rates of depression relative to the general population. Shame is a central mechanism linking disability status to poor mental health outcomes, including depression. Psychological flexibility and self-compassion have been shown to change one's relationship to negative self-evaluations such as shame. The goal of this study was to determine if psychological flexibility and self-compassion negatively predict depression and buffer the impact of shame on depression in adults with physical disabilities. Adults with physical disabilities (n = 20

Attachment insecurity and psychological (mal)adjustment in older adults: The longitudinal role of fear of self-compassion.

OBJECTIVES: Insecure attachment has been suggested to precede and perpetuate fear of self-compassion, with a negative impact on mental health. However, this evidence was obtained using general-age samples and cross-sectional designs. Our objective was to, in an older adult sample, analyse longitudinally the indirect effect of fear of self-compassion in the relationship between attachment insecurity and psychological (mal)adjustment, controlling for negative life events. DESIGN: Our study consisted of a repeated-measures design based on three data assessment moments across 6 months. Participan

The role of self compassion and psychological flexibility in the relationship between perseverance and life satisfaction among academics.

This cross-sectional study investigates how perseverance influences life satisfaction among academics, highlighting the novel role of self-compassion and psychological flexibility as parallel mediators. A total of 305 academics from various universities in Türkiye (34% female, 66% male; Mage = 40.22, SD = 8.56) completed standardized measures of life satisfaction, perseverance, self-compassion, and psychological flexibility. Correlational analyses revealed positive associations among all variables. Structural equation modeling indicated that perseverance enhances self-compassion, which in turn
