Breast cancer is the most common cancer type and cause of death among women in many countries. Monthly breast self-examination (BSE) is an effective diagnostic method for breast cancer. This study aimed to determine the knowledge level and practice frequency of BSE among healthcare workers in Kayseri, Turkey. Data were collected via a questionnaire that was prepared based on information in the literature. The questionnaire was composed of 2 sections: sociodemographic characteristics and practice and knowledge related to BSE. The sample group included 246 healthcare workers. Mann-Whitney U, Kru

OBJECTIVE: Early detection of melanomas might increase survival chance. Patients can usually see primary lesions while inspecting their skin. Skin self-examination (SSE) is therefore the recommended pre-screening method. To maximize the likelihood that SSE will be performed, it is important to distinguish those factors that increase the chance of performance. The aim is to examine motivational differences between (a) melanoma-prone persons who perform SSE once every 2-3 months, and (b) melanoma-prone persons with a lower SSE frequency.
METHODS: A survey to assess socio-demographic factors, at

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the leading type of cancer in women and is one of the most frequent cancers among Iranian women. Delay in diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer diminishes a women's chance of survival. Breast self- examination (BSE) may be effective in early detection. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between Iranian women's socioeconomic status and their knowledge and practice of BSE.
METHODS: Data were from a hospital-based case-control study among women diagnosed with breast cancer. Control subjects were matched to patients on age. 303 breast cancer

BACKGROUND: Skin self-examination (SSE) is associated with thinner melanomas in both North American and Italian patients. The knowledge of conditions associated with SSE may help in refining educational strategies for the prevention of melanoma.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency of SSE and the factors associated with SSE in subjects followed at a specialized pigmented lesion clinic (PLC) in Italy.
PATIENTS/METHODS: A series of 299 consecutive subjects who visited the Florence PLC was investigated by means of a self-administered questionnaire regarding SSE habit

This study estimated the frequency of breast-self examination practice and its possible relation to the stage of the disease at diagnosis and patient-related delay in diagnosis among newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Breast self-examination was practiced in 10.4% of cases. It was performed by patients from higher socioeconomic levels and those with a positive family history of breast cancer or benign breast mass. There was significant association between failure to practise breast self-examination and diagnostic delay. We emphasize the need for breast self-examination awareness campaigns

It is expected that there will be 178,700 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in American women during 1998. This corresponds to a new breast cancer diagnosis every 3 minutes. In the absence of any preventive measures at this time, control of breast cancer morbidity and mortality must be sought through early detection and treatment. A competency-based training curriculum in breast self-examination was developed that incorporated three specific skill components: a systematic pattern of search; palpation topography discrimination training; and use of appropriate finger pressure for examination.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the effect of breast self-examination (BSE) technique and frequency on the risk of death from breast cancer.
DESIGN: Case-control study nested within the Canadian National Breast Screening Study (NBSS).
SETTING: The Canadian NBSS, a multicentre randomized controlled trial of screening for breast cancer in Canadian women.
SUBJECTS: The case subjects were 163 women who had died from breast cancer and 57 women with distant metastases. Ten control subjects matched by 5-year age group, screening centre, year of enrolment and random allocation group were randomly selected fo

Breast self-examination is of interest for the early detection of breast cancer, especially in areas where mammography and regular physical examination of the breasts are not practicable as public health policies. At present, there is insufficient evidence that breast self-examination is effective in reducing mortality from breast cancer. To determine its effectiveness, this method should be applied in a comprehensive programme that provides teaching and guidance on practice of the technique, and facilities for self-referral and diagnosis (when any abnormality is detected) as well as treatment

Introduction Breast self-examination (BSE) is promoted as a component of breast self-awareness and a preventive measure, yet its psychosocial impact remains debated. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of BSE education on self-efficacy, health anxiety, and health locus of control among Greek women. Materials and methods A prospective cohort of 298 women (mean age 48.7 ± 10.7 years) participated in a structured BSE educational intervention. Psychosocial parameters were assessed at baseline, 6, and 12 months using validated scales: general self-efficacy, health anxiety, and multidimensional

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate whether a teaching session and optional reminders improved frequency of performance of vulvar self-examination (VSE) in a population at increased risk of vulvar cancer.
METHODS: Participants were recruited from Colposcopy and Vulvar Dermatology clinics at a publicly funded academic hospital in Ontario, Canada. Participants completed a questionnaire, were taught how to perform a VSE, and were given an information booklet. They had the option to receive phone or electronic health record reminders to complete a VSE over the course of the next 6 wee

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) represents an important cause of cancer death, its incidence rate has been rising gradually in the Arab world, and in Syria, BC is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death; its prognosis gets better as we detect it early in its first stages. So, it is very important to implement one or more early detection methods such as Breast Self-Examination (BSE), Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), and mammography. BSE represents an effective method to find out changes in breast structure when they happen. This study investigates the knowledge of BSE and

Adult sexual assault (ASA) in college remains a concern. Consequently, many college-aged women experience negative emotions surrounding sexual activity (sex-related distress). Consistent with self-medication theory, some drink to cope with sex-related distress, which may reduce distress, but lead to greater drinking quantity before sex and negative sexual consequences. How women with ASA histories navigate sexual situations and cope with sex-related distress is under researched. We examined ASA, sex-related distress, and drinking to cope motives to understand correlates of drinking before sex.

BACKGROUND: Significant cognitive changes as individuals' age are not being identified in a timely manner, delaying diagnosis and treatments. Use of brief, multi-domain, self-administered, objective cognitive assessment tools may remove some barriers in assessing and identifying cognitive changes. We compared longitudinal Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination (SAGE) test scores to non-self-administered Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores in 5 different diagnostic subgroups.
METHODS: A cohort study evaluating annual rates of change was performed on 665 consecutive patients from O

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most prevalent cancers and the leading cause of cancer related deaths among women worldwide with a steadily increasing global annual incidence. This study aims is to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of females in the UAE toward BC and Breast Self-Examination practice in the seven Emirates. This was a face-to-face questionnaire-based study using CAM (Breast Cancer Awareness Measure) conducted over 3 months (from March to June 2019) on a random sample of females across the UAE. Of the 400 females who filled the questionnaire, 112 (28%) did the CBE a
