American journal of mental retardation : AJMR2002eng
The dynamics of self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) were examined in 8 adults with mental retardation. The trajectories of the arm movements and the impact forces of the head blows were determined from a dynamic analysis of videotapes of discrete bouts of self-injury. The results revealed a high degree of cycle-to-cycle consistency in the qualitative dynamics of the limb motions, indicating that the motions involved in SIB are often stereotyped in nature. The resultant individual peak impact forces ranged from 50 to 1560 N. The impact forces of SIB as a percentage of body mass are either near or a

The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) is a 52-item respondent-based behavior rating instrument for self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive/destructive behavior in mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Items are rated on a frequency scale and a severity scale. The BPI-01 was administered by interviewing direct care staff of 432 randomly selected residents from a developmental center between the ages of 14 to 91 years. For 73% of those selected, at least one problem was endorsed on the BPI-01. A total of 43% showed self-injury, 54% stereotyped behavior, and 38% aggressi

Self-injurious behaviors in autistic youth vary widely in their form, intensity, and potential for physical injury. This study explored predictors of two categories of self-injurious behaviors that were delineated based on their potential for physical injury (self-injurious behavior-High Likelihood and self-injurious behavior-Low Likelihood), with a focus on the role of distress linked to a strong preference for routines (otherwise known as insistence on sameness). The sample included 1892 autistic youth (Mage = 10.82, SDage = 4.14; 22% females) across the United States. Distress associated wi

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) leads to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), the most common preventable cause of neurodevelopmental impairment. The classical narrative attributes the clinical picture of FASD exclusively to direct ethanol-induced brain injury. In the present review, we argue that this perspective is incomplete and leads to diagnostic errors, most often to the misdiagnosis of ADHD in children who in fact have FASD. We propose that, alongside the direct neurotoxicity of ethanol, an important and clinically under-recognized complementary mechanism is gut-brain axis dysfunctio

UNLABELLED: Impaired distress tolerance (DT) is theorized to be an etiological and maintenance factor for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs). However, the literature on DT and SITBs suffers from conflicting results and methodological challenges, and thus, is difficult to interpret.
OBJECTIVES: We conducted a systematic review to synthesize available evidence on DT and the full range of SITBs.
METHODS: We included peer-reviewed, English-language manuscripts presenting empirical data on DT/intolerance in relation to SITB among humans. Studies were identified via a search covering re

OBJECTIVE: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent among adolescents with depression, yet the mechanisms through which psychotherapy reduces NSSI remain unclear. This study evaluated the efficacy of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and examined whether reductions in NSSI were associated with changes in specific psychological flexibility (PF) processes.
METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 120 adolescents with comorbid depression and NSSI were assigned to ACT or treatment as usual (TAU). PF, depressive symptoms, and NSSI frequency were assessed at baseline and post-treatmen

BACKGROUND: Adolescent self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) present a global public health concern. Nurses, as frontline caregivers, play a crucial role in managing these cases, where their perceptions influence care quality. However, qualitative research deeply exploring these perceptions, particularly in the Zanjan, Iran context, remains scarce.
AIMS: To explore the perceptions and experiences of Zanjan nurses caring for adolescents with SIB.
METHODS: A qualitative content analysis study. Twelve nurses from general and psychiatric hospitals in Zanjan were purposively sampled. Data from in-depth

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that involuntary smoking (e.g., secondhand smoke [SHS] and thirdhand smoke [THS]) is not only associated with an increased risk of several physical health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, but also impacts mental health, including depression and anxiety. However, the relationships between SHS and THS exposure and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation (SI), and suicide attempts (SAs) remain unclear.
METHODS: Participants were recruited at a Chinese vocational college via voluntary online surveys conducted on campus.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior among adolescents is a significant public health issue, which brings a range of adverse consequences. However, the specific mechanisms underlying this behavior remain unclear. The current study aimed to investigate the hemodynamic activation characteristics of adolescents with NSSI using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and to explore the correlation of cortical activation with NSSI behavior.
METHODS: Eighteen adolescents with NSSI behavior and 24 healthy controls (HCs) participated in this study. Cortical activation (frontal a

BACKGROUND: This study aims to conduct the first-ever evaluation of our previously proposed behaviors of "hemomania" in individuals engaged with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI).
METHODS: The study encompassed 130 outpatients engaged with NSSI who applied at the psychiatry outpatient clinic. NSSI behaviors were assessed using the Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury, while psychiatric diagnoses were evaluated using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Disorders-Clinician Version. Subsequently, participants completed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and Short Form of Barratt Im

Self-injurious behaviors (SIB) encompass a heterogeneous set of self-inflicted aggressive behaviors that are highly prevalent in autistic youth. Existing research on SIB in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been limited by significant methodological and conceptual inconsistencies. Thus, the current study leveraged item-level data capturing the severity of unique SIB topographies to further understanding of factors associated with distinct SIB in a sample of 582 autistic youth (Mage = 12.12, SDage = 3.68; range: 3-19 years; 13% females). Results suggest variation in severity endorsements for s

The aim of this study was to assess the feature change of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors in bipolar disorder before and during the pandemic. A total of 115 adolescents with NSSI were evaluated using a Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition, Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Aged Children-Present and Lifetime Version, and some related scales. In comparison with the 2017 group, female sex, borderline personality disorder, self-reported internalizing disorders, anxiety/depression, and thinking disorders were all related with the 2021 a

BACKGROUND: Theoretical and empirical literature suggests that non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an important correlate of suicide risk. The present study was designed to evaluate: (a) whether NSSI is associated with increased odds of subsequent onsets of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) independent of common mental disorders, (b) whether NSSI is associated with increased risk of transitioning from suicide ideation to attempt, and (c) which NSSI characteristics are associated with STB after NSSI.
METHOD: Using discrete-time survival models, based on retrospective age of onset reports fr

BACKGROUND: Previous theory has suggested that invalidating environments in the form of emotional maltreatment should be a specific risk factor for the development of self-injurious behaviors (Linehan, 1993, Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, New York, Guilford Press). However, results from previous studies have been mixed, possibly indicating that this effect may not be the same for all individuals. In fact, some individuals may be more susceptible to environmental influences (i.e., phenotypic plasticity), and this susceptibility may be in part a function of ge

There are few published randomized controlled trials examining treatment for symptoms of bulimia nervosa (BN) in adolescents. Additionally, many adolescents presenting for treatment for BN symptoms endorse co-occurring mood disturbances, suicidality, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), and may not meet full Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV-Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) diagnostic criteria for BN. In addition to the limited number of randomized controlled trials, published treatment studies of BN symptoms in adolescence do not specifically address the multiple comorbid symptoms that these adole

Relief is a positive emotional state that arises following the cessation of painful stimuli. Adolescents with mental health problems frequently engage in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). NSSI has for long been postulated as strategy for relieving intense aversive emotions. Although NSSI is hypothesized to result from a learning process, experimental evidence remains scarce. In this study, we tested whether adolescent patients suffering from NSSI have enhanced relief-learning as compared to healthy adolescents. Fifty-five girls underwent classical conditioning during which one shape (conditione

AIM: This study aimed to analyze the influencing factors of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with depression.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for observational studies on factors influencing NSSI behavior in adolescents with depression published between 1 January 2010 and 7 May 2026. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed methodological qua

This study sought to determine the explanatory variables behind suicidal behavior and non-suicidal self-injury during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. The sample comprised 4797 adults, who filled out a series of standardized instruments and additional questions on COVID-19 exposure (self and others), self-injury, and suicidal behavior. One in 10 participants reported self-injury, and three in 10 had considered or attempted suicide. The factors associated with self-injury and suicidal behavior were lower educational level, younger age, chronic diseases, and anxiety. The fact
