Differentiating amnestic from non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment subtypes using graph theoretical measures of electroencephalography.

The purpose of this study was to explore different patterns of functional networks between amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and non-aMCI (naMCI) using electroencephalography (EEG) graph theoretical analysis. The data of 197 drug-naïve individuals who complained cognitive impairment were reviewed. Resting-state EEG data was acquired. Graph analyses were performed and compared between aMCI and naMCI, as well as between early and late aMCI. Correlation analyses were conducted between the graph measures and neuropsychological test results. Machine learning algorithms were applied to deter

Avian agnosia: A window into auditory semantics.

The functional and neural organisation of auditory knowledge is relatively poorly understood. The breakdown of conceptual knowledge in semantic dementia has revealed that pre-morbid expertise influences the extent to which knowledge is differentiated. Whether this principle applies to a similar extent in the auditory domain is not yet known. Previous reports of patients with impaired auditory vs. intact visual expert knowledge suggest that expertise may have differential effects upon the organisation of auditory and visual knowledge. An equally plausible alternative, however, is that auditory

Selective activation around the left occipito-temporal sulcus for words relative to pictures: individual variability or false positives?

We used high-resolution fMRI to investigate claims that learning to read results in greater left occipito-temporal (OT) activation for written words relative to pictures of objects. In the first experiment, 9/16 subjects performing a one-back task showed activation in > or =1 left OT voxel for words relative to pictures (P < 0.05 uncorrected). In a second experiment, another 9/15 subjects performing a semantic decision task activated > or =1 left OT voxel for words relative to pictures. However, at this low statistical threshold false positives need to be excluded. The semantic decision paradi

The discriminative linguistic profiles of progressive supranuclear palsy and Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Speech and language disturbances are very frequent in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Therefore, they are part of the diagnostic criteria set forth by the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) for the disease and are considered a core clinical feature. However, more studies are needed to characterize the linguistic profile of PSP, thus being able to assist in the differential diagnosis. Additionally, studies assessing linguistic differences among PSP phenotypes are needed. The objective of this study is to analyze the language alterations presented by

A Novel Computerized Cognitive Test for the Detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Its Association with Neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's Disease Prone Brain Regions.

During the prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), neurodegenerative changes can be identified by measuring volumetric loss in AD-prone brain regions on MRI. Cognitive assessments that are sensitive enough to measure the early brain-behavior manifestations of AD and that correlate with biomarkers of neurodegeneration are needed to identify and monitor individuals at risk for dementia. Weak sensitivity to early cognitive change has been a major limitation of traditional cognitive assessments. In this study, we focused on expanding our previous work by determining whether a digitized cognit

Exponential-growth underestimation: Semantic framing and information availability.

Exponential growth is consistently underestimated. Although this tendency reflects difficulty in processing nonlinear growth, its magnitude may also be sensitive to semantic context and heuristic influences. Across three preregistered experiments (total N = 2836), participants estimated mathematically equivalent exponential-growth problems framed as representing coronavirus infections or recoveries. Across experiments, participants' estimates were closer to the correct answers when the numerical progressions represented coronavirus infections rather than recoveries (i.e., they showed less unde

Concordance between domain-based neuropsychological profiles and clinical phenotypes in young-onset dementia.

Objective: Young-onset dementia (YOD; onset < 65 years) frequently presents with phenotypes that involve specific cognitive domains whilst relatively sparing episodic memory, such as behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), and primary progressive aphasias (PPA). We hypothesized that standard neuropsychological batteries may fail to identify these phenotypes and tested their ability to pick up cognitive deficits for YOD phenotypes based on their clinical criteria. Methods: In this observational study, we included 2,056 consecutive YOD patients from

Distinctive Progression Patterns of Brain Structural Damage Aid Classification of Frontotemporal Dementia Variants.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) encompasses diverse clinical phenotypes, primarily characterized by behavioral and/or language dysfunction. A newly characterized variant, semantic behavioral variant FTD (sbvFTD), exhibits predominant right temporal atrophy with features bridging behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD) and semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA). This study investigates the longitudinal structural MRI correlates of these FTD variants, focusing on cortical and subcortical structural damage to aid differential diagnosis and prognosis. METHODS: Seventy-one FTD patie

The meaning of 'life' and other abstract words: Insights from neuropsychology.

There are a number of long-standing theories on how the cognitive processing of abstract words, like 'life', differs from that of concrete words, like 'knife'. This review considers current perspectives on this debate, focusing particularly on insights obtained from patients with language disorders and integrating these with evidence from functional neuroimaging studies. The evidence supports three distinct and mutually compatible hypotheses. (1) Concrete and abstract words differ in their representational substrates, with concrete words depending particularly on sensory experiences and abstra

Reading disorders in primary progressive aphasia: a behavioral and neuroimaging study.

Previous neuropsychological studies on acquired dyslexia revealed a double dissociation in reading impairments. Patients with phonological dyslexia have selective difficulty in reading pseudo-words, while those with surface dyslexia misread exception words. This double dissociation in reading abilities has often been reported in brain-damaged patients, but it has not been consistently shown in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we investigated reading impairments and their anatomical correlates in various neurodegenerative diseases. First, we performed a behavioral analys

A functional neuroimaging description of two deep dyslexic patients.

Deep dyslexia is a striking reading disorder that results from left-hemisphere brain damage and is characterized by semantic errors in reading single words aloud (e.g., reading 'spirit' as 'whisky'). Two types of explanation for this syndrome have been advanced. One is that deep dyslexia results from a residual left-hemisphere reading system that has lost the ability to pronounce a printed word without reference to meaning. The second is that deep dyslexia reflects right-hemisphere word processing. Although previous attempts to adjudicate between these hypotheses have been inconclusive, the co

Differential effects of body mass index on domain-specific cognitive outcomes after stroke.

Although the obesity paradox is an important modifiable factor in cardiovascular diseases, little research has been conducted to determine how it affects post-stroke cognitive function. We aimed to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and domain-specific cognitive outcomes, focusing on the subdivision of each frontal domain function in post-ischemic stroke survivors. A total of 335 ischemic stroke patients were included in the study after completion of the Korean-Mini Mental Status Examination (K-MMSE) and the vascular cognitive impairment harmonization standards neuropsyc

The functional neuroanatomy of emotion processing in frontotemporal dementias.

Impaired processing of emotional signals is a core feature of frontotemporal dementia syndromes, but the underlying neural mechanisms have proved challenging to characterize and measure. Progress in this field may depend on detecting functional changes in the working brain, and disentangling components of emotion processing that include sensory decoding, emotion categorization and emotional contagion. We addressed this using functional MRI of naturalistic, dynamic facial emotion processing with concurrent indices of autonomic arousal, in a cohort of patients representing all major frontotempor

Awake craniotomy with English and British sign language mapping in a patient with a left temporal glioblastoma reveals discordant speech-sign language maps.

The aim of this case study was to describe differences in English and British Sign Language (BSL) communication caused by a left temporal tumour resulting in discordant presentation of symptoms, intraoperative stimulation mapping during awake craniotomy and post-operative language abilities. We report the first case of a hearing child of deaf adults, who acquired BSL with English as a second language. The patient presented with English word finding difficulty, phonemic paraphasias, and reading and writing challenges, with BSL preserved. Intraoperatively, object naming and semantic fluency task

Spatio-temporal cortical dynamics of phonemic and semantic fluency.

Hemodynamic brain imaging and lesion studies have suggested differential involvement of expressive language-related cortical regions based on the phonemic versus semantic characteristics of verbal cues. The aims of this study were: 1) to elucidate the relative timing of the activity of inferior frontal and anterior insular versus motor and supplementary motor cortex during a fluency task and 2) to assess potential differences in the location or timing of activity in anterior and posterior language areas based on letter versus category cues. Using magnetic source imaging (MSI), we found signifi

Behavioral and bodily self concept changes after assertive training. A pilot study.

The study aims at finding correlations between the development of assertiveness through assertive training and the modification of the bodily self concept (or body image). Eleven social phobic patients (6 women, 5 men, mean age 31.5) are treated in two groups and measured by Rathus's assertiveness schedule, and Osgood's semantic differential (key concepts: my self, my body, my voice, my gestures, my look; control concept: a table). At post test and follow-up (between 6 and 9 months), an ANOVA shows a significant positive change in assertiveness (p 0.001), correlated with modifications in bodil

Asymmetry in perception of the sides of the human face.

The objective of this research was to determine if systematic differences occur in the way people ascribe meaning to right and left sides of the human face. Twenty-two faces, bilaterally symmetrical, were constructed from 11 photographs. These left- and right-constructed faces were rated 1 wk. apart by 26 raters on nine bipolar adjective scales selected for the evaluative, potency, and activity dimensions of the semantic differential (Osgood, 1961). Multivariate F tests indicated that on seven of the nine bipolar scales the left- and right-sided faces received significantly different ratings.

Lesion correlates of patholinguistic profiles in chronic aphasia: comparisons of syndrome-, modality- and symptom-level assessment.

One way to investigate the neuronal underpinnings of language competence is to correlate patholinguistic profiles of aphasic patients to corresponding lesion sites. Constituting the beginnings of aphasiology and neurolinguistics over a century ago, this approach has been revived and refined in the past decade by statistical approaches mapping continuous variables (providing metrics that are not simply categorical) on voxel-wise lesion information (voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping). Here we investigate whether and how voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping allows us to delineate specific lesion p
