Investigation of potential cognitive tests for use with older adults in audiology clinics.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive declines in working memory and processing speed are hallmarks of aging. Deficits in speech understanding also are seen in aging individuals. A clinical test to determine whether the cognitive aging changes contribute to aging speech understanding difficulties would be helpful for determining rehabilitation strategies in audiology clinics. PURPOSE: To identify a clinical neurocognitive test or battery of tests that could be used in audiology clinics to help explain deficits in speech recognition in some older listeners. RESEARCH DESIGN: A correlational study examining th

Use of sequence information in associative learning in control subjects and cerebellar patients.

Previous studies of our group have shown that cerebellar patients are impaired in their ability to associate a color and a numeral or two colors with a button push. The aim of the present study was to examine whether control subjects make use of sequence information in visuomotor associative learning tasks and if this ability is impaired in cerebellar patients. A group of eight patients with degenerative cerebellar disease and eight age, sex and IQ matched controls were tested. Subjects had to learn the association between pairs of colored squares and a button push. Two colored squares were sh

Impaired executive functioning mediates the association between aging and deterministic sequence learning.

Sensitivity to the fixed ordering of actions and events, or deterministic sequence learning, is an important skill throughout adulthood. Yet, it remains unclear whether age deficits in sequencing exist, and we lack a firm understanding of which factors might contribute to age-related impairments when they arise. Though debated, executive functioning, governed by the frontal lobe, may underlie age-related sequence learning deficits in older adults. The present study asked if age predicts errors in deterministic sequence learning across the older adult lifespan (ages 55-89), and whether executiv

Short timescale modulation of cortical and cerebellar activity in the early phase of motor sequence learning: an fMRI study.

Motor learning is a multi-stage process, in which the involvement of different brain regions is related to the specific stage. We aimed at characterising short timescale changes of brain activity induced by motor sequence learning. Twenty healthy volunteers performed a serial reaction time task during an MRI session in a 3 T scanner. The task consisted of two conditions: repeated and random, that were compared over the whole fMRI run, as well as within sections, to investigate brain activity modulating related to the learning stage. The whole fMRI run analysis showed a stronger response for th

Procedural Learning and Retention in Older Subjects: The Contribution of Sensorimotor and Premotor Cortex.

PURPOSE: To investigate the neurobiological basis of procedural learning and retention of motor memories in aging. METHOD: We used a modified serial reaction time (SRT) task with feedback in two age groups: young (n = 18, 24.9 ± 3.9 years, range: 18-32 years) and older (n = 19, 63.5 ± 5.1 years, range: 54-73 years) healthy participants. We assessed procedural learning while participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI, Day 1). On the following day, we assessed retention behaviorally outside the scanner. FINDING: Both groups showed significant procedural learning (p < 0.

Superior non-specific motor learning in the blind.

It is well established that blindness induces changes in cerebral function and structure, namely affecting the somatomotor regions. However, the behavioural significance of these changes on the motor system, and on motor learning in particular, remains elusive. In this study, we used a modified version of the serial reaction time task (SRTT) with auditory cues to assess sequence specific and non-specific motor learning in blind adults and sighted controls, and compare them with sighted controls performing the classic visual SRTT. Our results show that the auditory SRTT faithfully replicates th

Planning in Nonhuman Primates Emerges from Structure Knowledge and is Distinct from Attention, Working Memory, Effort Control, and Learning.

Forward planning involves mentally simulating future choices. Such mental simulation may constitute an independent cognitive operation, or it may be intricately linked to canonical cognitive operations supporting working memory of choice options, covert attentional information sampling, forming memory models of problem structure and effort control for pursuing future goals. Here, we test the relative independence of planning in non-human primates with an object-sequence planning task assessed together with an assay of simpler cognitive tasks. The sequence task unexpectedly masked objects at fu

Reproducibility of treadmill exercise data in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Serial submaximal treadmill tests are often used to evaluate the efficacy of therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation. Since the response to serial tests can be influenced by a 'learning phenomenon', we performed maximal exercise tests on 9 patients (mean age 63 +/- 4 years) with chronic atrial fibrillation. Points of analysis for the initial and follow-up treadmill exercise tests were 3 mph/0% grade, the gas exchange anaerobic threshold, and maximal exertion. Significant (p less than 0.05) reductions in ventilation (l/min) and oxygen uptake (ml/kg/min) were observed on follow-up at a stan

Revisiting the "enigma" of musicians with dyslexia: Auditory sequencing and speech abilities.

Previous research has suggested a link between musical training and auditory processing skills. Musicians have shown enhanced perception of auditory features critical to both music and speech, suggesting that this link extends beyond basic auditory processing. It remains unclear to what extent musicians who also have dyslexia show these specialized abilities, considering often-observed persistent deficits that coincide with reading impairments. The present study evaluated auditory sequencing and speech discrimination in 52 adults comprised of musicians with dyslexia, nonmusicians with dyslexia

Identification and remediation of reading difficulties based on successive processing deficits and delay in general reading.

Widespread learning problems among South African children are associated with the apartheid era and show a need for effective reading programs. In selecting these programs, it is useful to differentiate between children with dyslexia and children whose reading is poor because teaching was inadequate. In this study, the Woodcock Tests of Reading Mastery-Revised and tests modelled on the Cognitive Assessment System were used to define a group of children with deficits in successive processing associated with dyslexia and a group of children with general reading delay. There were two girls and fi

The effect of switching between sequential and repetitive movements on cortical activation.

We used whole-head functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the effect of switching between different sequential and repetitive movements in the context of conditional and fixed tasks. Four different movement tasks were applied: (1) unpredictable switching between two movement sequences comprising six submovements each according to visual cues (SEQ-VC); (2) unpredictable switching between repetitive movement of one finger according to visual cues (REP-VC); (3) performance of the same sequential movements used for SEQ-VC but in a fixed mode triggered by a visual stimulus (SEQ

Investigating learning deficits associated with dyslexia.

An artificial grammar learning task was used to define two learning tasks of identical complexity at the symbolic level, but which differed in terms of stimulus format. The stimuli in one learning task were created so as to encourage participants to perceive each stimulus as a whole, with less emphasis on the stimulus constituent elements (the 'embedded' stimuli), while in the second task the constituent elements of each stimulus were emphasized by presenting them serially (the 'sequences' stimuli). Using a between participants design, dyslexic participants performed equally well in the two ve

Motor learning in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: activation in superior parietal lobule related to learning and repetitive behaviors.

Motor-linked implicit learning is the learning of a sequence of movements without conscious awareness. Although motor symptoms are frequently reported in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), recent behavioral studies have suggested that motor-linked implicit learning may be intact in ASD. The serial reaction time (SRT) task is one of the most common measures of motor-linked implicit learning. The present study used a 3T functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner to examine the behavioral and neural correlates of real-time motor sequence learning in adolescents and adults with AS

Impairment of eyeblink classical conditioning in progressive supranuclear palsy.

In a previous study we showed that learning in eyeblink classical conditioning (EBCC) is normal in Parkinson's disease (PD) and that the serial reaction time task (SRTT) is only marginally impaired. Since pathological lesions are more widespread in the atypical parkinsonian disorder of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) than in PD, we hypothesized that PSP patients may show more profound deficits in the EBCC and SRTT learning tasks. We therefore investigated EBCC with a delay and two trace paradigms, an SRTT and the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) in eight patients with PSP and an age

Working memory in children with developmental disorders.

The aim of the present study was to directly compare working memory skills across students with different developmental disorders to investigate whether the uniqueness of their diagnosis would impact memory skills. The authors report findings confirming differential memory profiles on the basis of the following developmental disorders: Specific Language Impairment, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Asperger syndrome (AS). Specifically, language impairments were associated with selective deficits in verbal short-term and working memory, whe

[Cognitive dysfunction following anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture. Comparison with alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome on neuropsychological performance].

The present study aims to compare neuropsychological performance of patients following anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture (ACoA) with that of patients with alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome (AKS). Fifteen ACoA patients and ten age-and education-matched AKS patients were included in the study. All the patients were tested at least one year post onset of their illness at a stable condition. The WAIS and forward digit span scores of AKS were also matched to ACoA, and simple attention and general intelligence were well preserved both in ACoA and AKS. Verbal working memory and functional outcome in patients with unipolar major depressive disorder.

In this naturalistic cross-sectional study, the author tested the hypothesis that verbal working memory (WM) in major depressive disorder (MDD) would predict functional outcome. The subjects consisted of 54 clinic adult out-patients. The author found that, in the patients with current episode of MDD, functional outcome was significantly correlated with depressive scores, but not with Digit Sequencing Task scores. Meanwhile, in a sample of full remitted or partial remitted (mildly depressed) patients, functional outcome was significantly correlated with both Digit Sequencing Task scores and dep

MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry discriminates drug-susceptible and -resistant strains in Mycobacterium abscessus.

Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) infection is a significant public-health concern due to its resistance to multiple antibiotics and associated treatment challenges. There is a pressing need for a rapid and effective method capable of reliably identifying M. abscessus drug resistance. Our study aimed to investigate the capacity of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to identify M. abscessus drug-resistant isolates, offering potential proteomic spectrum markers for detecting resistant strains in clinical diagnosis and treatment.
