Promoting the sexual health of MSM in the context of comorbid mental health problems.

Despite the moderate efficacy of HIV prevention interventions for at risk gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), MSM continue to represent the largest group of new HIV infections and the largest number of individuals living with HIV in the US. Environmental factors such as sexual minority stress increase the vulnerability of MSM for mental health problems. These mental health problems can be a barrier to consistently engaging in self-care health behaviors such as sexual risk reduction. We consider the following observations critical to identifying priorities for HIV preventi

Unpacking the Gendered Nature of Sexual Health Information Seeking: The Role of Relationship Quality, Sexual Shame and Sexual Relationship Power.

Women during emerging adulthood are disproportionately susceptible to sexually transmitted infections due to biological and socioeconomic vulnerabilities. Central to safe sex is the process by which women seek information regarding their male partners' intentions to use condoms, which is complicated by the gendered nature of sexual risks and the influence of sociocultural factors. Drawing on the theory of motivated information management, we examined how relationship quality, sexual relationship power, and sexual shame were associated with sexual risk information-seeking among Chinese emerging

Budgeting for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights under universal health coverage.

Achieving universal health coverage (UHC) for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) requires informed budgeting that is aligned with UHC objectives. We draw data from Adding It Up 2019 (AIU-2019) to provide critical new country-level and regional, intervention-specific costs for the provision of SRH services. AIU-2019 is a cost-outcomes analysis, undertaken from the health system perspective, which estimates the costs and impacts of offering SRH care in low- and middle-income countries. We present direct cost estimates for 109 SRH interventions and find that human resources comprise the largest

Sexual health outcomes improvement in sickle cell disease: a matter of health policy?

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic priapism is a true male sexual dysfunction, consisting of uncontrollable, prolonged, and often painful erections of the penis. A commonly observed outcome, as a result of erectile tissue damage and fibrosis in this setting, is the complete loss of natural erectile ability. Males with sickle cell disease (SCD) are commonly affected. Given the adverse health consequences of this condition coupled with its specific population extent, health policy considerations are warranted. AIM: This article aimed to study circumstances surrounding priapism associated with SCD for the p

LGBTQIA+ sexual health: a SITCC clinical framework for integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy and sexual medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQIA+) individuals experience significant sexual health disparities shaped by minority stress processes, trauma exposure, mental health burden, and historically heteronormative and cisnormative clinical frameworks. Although international guidelines, standards of care, and professional guidance documents increasingly endorse affirmative and evidence-informed care, their integration into routine sexual medicine and psychotherapeutic practice remains inconsistent, particularly in the assessment and clinical management of sexual dysfunctions in LGBTQIA+

Historical Trends in Sexual Activity and Sexual Health in France (1992-2023): A Gendered Perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze historical gender trends in sexual indicators in France over a period of three decades. METHODS: We used data from three national probability surveys on sexual behaviors in France conducted in 1992 (N = 20,055), 2006 (N = 12,364), and 2023 (N = 19,015) to compare sexual indicators among men and women aged 18-69 years. RESULTS: The median age at first sexual intercourse has increased since the late 2010s, reaching 18.2 years for women and 17.7 years for men in 2023. The average number of lifetime sexual partners for those who have already had a sexual partner increased f

The Impact of Sibling Relationships on Behavioral and Sexual Health among Latino Sexual Minority Men.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective method for preventing HIV acquisition and plays a crucial role in the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the US initiative. However, there are various barriers that hinder the access and uptake of PrEP among Latino sexual minority men (SMM) at individual, interpersonal, and cultural levels. While the significance of cultural factors in designing and implementing HIV prevention programs for Latino populations has been consistently emphasized in the literature and prioritized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, few studies have directl

Advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights in Africa.

Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are fundamental yet inadequately realized across Africa, undermining well-being, economic stability, and autonomy. This editorial synthesizes findings from 24 studies in a special collection, highlighting persistent challenges and innovative solutions. Key issues in family planning include low contraceptive uptake and discontinuation, particularly among women with HIV and adolescents, exacerbated by social pressures and systemic exclusion of marginalized groups like LGBTQ+ individuals and persons with disabilities. Homophobia in the provision of sexual health care in the UK.

Decision making in the provision of health care is influenced by not only scientific evidence but also by the systems in which decisions are made. We consider national decisions made in the UK related to sexually transmitted infection prevention in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), with three specific examples-HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) vaccination, and doxycycline prophylaxis. We suggest that entrenched societal and political homophobia results in unacceptable delays and limitations to accessing highly effective interventions and

Sexual Health in Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer.

Sexual health (SH), an integral aspect of overall health and quality of life, can be negatively affected by cancer and cancer treatment. SH is influenced by biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors, and, for adolescents and young adults (AYAs), developmental factors. The AYA population (age 15-39 years) is diverse in terms of psychosexual development, interpersonal relationships, and varying levels of independence, resulting in unique SH needs for this population. AYAs with cancer are particularly vulnerable to unmet SH needs related to contraception and infection prevention, se

Promoting Sexual Health and Safety for Women With Disabilities.

Despite representing one of the largest and fastest-growing subpopulations of reproductive-age women, women with disabilities experience profound disparities in sexual and reproductive health care. Women with disabilities face disproportionately high rates of unmet sexual health needs, inadequate sexual education, and elevated risks of sexual abuse and intimate partner violence (IPV). These inequities are driven by structural, interpersonal, and clinical barriers that remain poorly addressed within women's health care systems. Given the importance of addressing reproductive health care needs,

Value of self-care for sexual and reproductive health.

It is opportune for the Journal to contribute to Self-Care Month and Self-Care Day, as proclaimed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its efforts to promote self-care which is increasingly prominent in discourses in resource-limited settings for attaining universal health coverage. With sexual and reproductive health and rights facing hindrances, such as cultural barriers, self-care should facilitate access to services whilst maintaining privacy. Largely limited to pregnancy beforehand, self-care can now be promoted for the self-management of medical abortion, self-administration of inje
