Polyandry in Noctuid Moths: Taxonomic, Bionomic, and Evolutionary Implications.

Polyandry influences sexual behaviour and supports sexual selection in moths, incl. Noctuids. In polyandry, a female mates with multiple males within a few days. Copulation is a multi-phase process, as sperm are packed into spermatophores and transferred to the female genitalia. This process is costly, since spermatophore production and transfer is time-consuming. When this process is repeated, it results in sexual selection and enhances heterozygosity. Pest and migrating Noctuids are often polyandrous. Polyandry is common in the "pest clade" of Noctuidae (e.g., Euxoa, Dichagyris). We hypothes

Sex and asymmetry in humans: what is the role of developmental instability?

Because asymmetric individuals are less attractive and may suffer from reduced fitness, bilateral asymmetry is widely believed to affect human sexual selection. Its evolutionary significance is based on the presumed relationship with developmental instability (DI). Yet, relationships between DI and bilateral asymmetry are often weak and possibly confounded by asymmetric mechanical loadings because of handedness. We related asymmetry in hands and faces to degrees of handedness and sexual behaviour in 100 humans. Handedness correlated to levels of asymmetry, thereby likely invalidating the use o

The postnatal ontogeny of the sexually dimorphic vocal apparatus in goitred gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa).

This study quantitatively documents the progressive development of sexual dimorphism of the vocal organs along the ontogeny of the goitred gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa). The major, male-specific secondary sexual features, of vocal anatomy in goitred gazelle are an enlarged larynx and a marked laryngeal descent. These features appear to have evolved by sexual selection and may serve as a model for similar events in male humans. Sexual dimorphism of larynx size and larynx position in adult goitred gazelles is more pronounced than in humans, whereas the vocal anatomy of neonate goitred gazelles

Evolutionary ecology of the prezygotic stage.

The life cycles of sexually reproducing animals and flowering plants begin with male and female gametes and their fusion to form a zygote. Selection at this earliest stage is crucial for offspring quality and raises similar evolutionary issues, yet zoology and botany use dissimilar approaches. There are striking parallels in the role of prezygotic competition for sexual selection on males, cryptic female choice, sexual conflict, and against selfish genetic elements and genetic incompatibility. In both groups, understanding the evolution of sex-specific and reproductive traits will require an a

Risk behaviors in volunteer blood donors who seroconverted for HIV, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire 1997 to 2005.

BACKGROUND: The residual risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission from blood products in the Abidjan National Blood Transfusion Center was estimated to be 1 in 5780 blood donations over the period 2002 through 2004. We aimed at describing risk behaviors in blood donors who seroconverted for HIV in Abidjan to improve the pre-blood donation selection. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We investigated the behavioral profile of HIV seroconverters assessed before their HIV diagnosis, during the blood donation selection at the blood bank of Abidjan, and compared it to the profile documented

Differentiating Men With Sexual Interest in Children and Those Involved in Sexual Behaviour With Children.

This article examines the factors associated with different groups of men based on their self-reported sexual interest and behaviour towards children. Knowledge in this area usually draws on forensic or clinical samples or relies on self-reporting from cohorts who identify as sexually attracted to children but claim to be non-offending. Clear definitions are therefore needed to interpret findings consistently. In this study, sexual interest in children refers to attraction to individuals aged 15 or younger or interest in abusing a child in hypothetical scenarios. Sexual behaviour involving min

Sexual conflict over sex-an underappreciated consequence of childbirth?

Many postpartum women experience sexual dysfunction, characterised by reduced sexual motivation and libido, and pain during intercourse. Menstruation is also suppressed in breastfeeding women (lactational amenorrhoea). Lactational amenorrhoea has been discussed in an evolutionary context due to its positive impacts on birth spacing. In contrast, postpartum sexual dysfunction has not been viewed through an evolutionary lens. Might postpartum sexual dysfunction also be under selection? We discuss possible evolutionary explanations for postpartum sexual dysfunction. In particular, we suggest that

Measurement properties of sexual function assessment questionnaires in women with endometriosis: A systematic review following COSMIN guidelines.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual function of patients with endometriosis should be assessed by patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) that present high reliability and validity. The objective was to study the PROMs used to assess sexual function for patients with endometriosis to improve their selection for research and clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a systematic literature review from January 2000 to September 2023. All studies including women with confirmed endometriosis and assessing sexual quality of life or sexual function or sexual distress were retrieved. Different proper

Perspective: the evolution of hormones and person perception-a quantitative genetic framework.

Evolutionary biology provides a unifying theory for testing hypotheses about the relationship between hormones and person perception. Person perception usually receives attention from the perspective of sexual selection. However, because person perception is one trait in a suite regulated by hormones, univariate approaches are insufficient. In this Perspectives article, quantitative genetics is presented as an important but underutilized framework for testing evolutionary hypotheses within this literature. We note tacit assumptions within the current literature on psychiatric genetics, which i

Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD): Biological Plausibility, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Presumed Risk Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Post-SSRI sexual-dysfunction (PSSD) is an iatrogenic syndrome, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms of which are unclear. Symptom onset follows cessation of serotonergic antidepressants i.e. Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's, SNRI's), and Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA's). PSSD symptoms include genital anesthesia, erectile dysfunction and orgasmic/ejaculatory anhedonia, and should be differentiated from depression-related sexual-dysfunction. Recently, accumulated data of numerous case-reports suggest additional non-sexual symptoms including,

Effect of epidemiological treatment of contacts in preventing recurrences of non-gonococcal urethritis.

Clinical investigations of the usefulness of routine epidemiological treatment of sexual contacts of men with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) have produced conflicting results that could have been due to the selection of patients. In this study, which was undertaken in a provincial city, 100 men with untreated sexual partners and 100 demographically similar men with treated sexual partners were reviewed for recurrences of NGU over 12 months. Prolonged courses of tetracyclines were found to be beneficial particularly when the sexual partner gave positive results to tests for chlamydiae. There w

Group sex, sex change, and parasitic males: sexual strategies among the fishes and their neurobiological correlates.

Sexual selection, in the form of intrasexual competition and mate choice, has driven the evolution of a variety of sexual phenotypes amongst the vertebrates (Andersson, 1994). As a result, vertebrate species utilize many different approaches to acquire fertilizations. Humans and other primates show a wide range of sexual behaviors, but this range is dwarfed by the remarkable variation seen in advanced fishes. The goals of this review are (a) to acquaint the reader with the tremendous sexual diversity exhibited by fishes, (b) to demonstrate how this diversity provides unique opportunities to ex

Sperm competition intensity shapes divergence in both sperm morphology and reproductive genes across murine rodents.

It remains unclear how variation in the intensity of sperm competition shapes phenotypic and molecular evolution across clades. Mice and rats in the subfamily Murinae are a rapid radiation exhibiting incredible diversity in sperm morphology and production. We combined phenotypic and genomic data to perform phylogenetic comparisons of male reproductive traits and genes across 78 murine species. We identified several shifts towards smaller relative testes mass (RTM), presumably reflecting reduced sperm competition. Several sperm traits were associated with RTM, suggesting that mating system evol

Integrated testis transcriptome and whole genome analysis of sexual maturity in Large White and Tongcheng pigs.

Testicular development and spermatogenesis play critical roles in male fertility and sexual maturation. To explore the genetic basis and key genes related to sexual maturity, we measured serum testosterone content and analysed testis tissue sections of Large White (LW) and Tongcheng (TC) boars at an immature age. We then screened differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in testis development in both breeds using RNA-seq. Finally, we analysed the selection signatures of both breeds to investigate which DEGs were subjected to positive selection. Our findings showed that serum testosterone contents

Sexual cooperation and conflict in butterflies: a male-transferred anti-aphrodisiac reduces harassment of recently mated females.

Sexual selection theory predicts that the different selection pressures on males and females result in sexual conflict. However, in some instances males and females share a common interest which could lead to sexual cooperation. In the pierid butterfly Pieris napi the male and the recently mated female share a common interest in reducing female harassment by other males soon after mating. Here we show that P. napi males transfer an anti-aphrodisiac to the female at mating, methyl-salicylate (MeS), which is a volatile substance which mated females emit when courted and which makes males quickly

Lethal combats in the forest among wild western gorillas.

Lethal intergroup encounters occur in many species because of sexual selection. While documented in mountain gorillas, they are absent in western gorillas as, instead, it is predicted by their higher feeding (frugivory) and mate competition (single-vs. multi-male groups). We investigate whether the injuries on three dead silverbacks and one adult female from four groups of western gorillas in the Central African Republic, resulted from interactions with gorillas or leopards. We identified two distinct injury patterns caused by gorillas (isolated lacerations, round wounds) and leopards (punctur

Stereotypical love: a cluster analysis of self-presentation strategies in tinder profile pictures.

BACKGROUND: Although dating apps are the preferred means of meeting sexual and romantic partners, users frequently experience disappointment, highlighting the importance of understanding self-presentation strategies and selection processes to mitigate negative experiences. AIM: This study examines self-presentation strategies in Tinder profile pictures, aiming to identify typological patterns, characterize common profile-building strategies, and analyze differences by age, gender, and sexual orientation. METHODS: We employed a mixed dimensional approach-both categorical and numerical-to char

The DSFI: a multidimensional measure of sexual functioning.

The present report summarizes work to date on the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory (DSFI), a multidimensional measure of human sexual functioning. We discuss the rationale for the test as well as the selection of the primary domains of measurement. Reliability coefficients for the various subtests are given, and a review section on validation studies is provided, including a factor analysis, predictive validation, and discriminant function analyses. Prototypic clinical profiles are also provided for several of the major types of sexual dysfunction.

Does the Jarman-Bell principle at intra-specific level explain sexual segregation in polygynous ungulates? Sex differences in forage digestibility in Soay sheep.

The Jarman-Bell principle states that large-bodied mammalian herbivores can subsist on lower quality diets because of their lower metabolism requirement/gut capacity ratio. Two major hypotheses for sexual segregation (the behaviour in which animals of the same species aggregate by sex) base their foundations on extending this principle to the intraspecific level, despite the lack of experimental evidence to support this. The first proposes that the larger males can process fibre (low-quality diet) more efficiently than the smaller females, leading to sexual segregation by habitat partitioning

Penis evolution across species: divergence and diversity.

The penis is an incredibly diverse and rapidly evolving structure, such that even in closely related species that otherwise differ very little in their morphology, penis form can be highly differentiated. Penises are also much more complex than their fundamental function - sperm transfer - would seem to require. The rapid divergent evolution of male structures is typically the signature of traits under sexual selection and the current evidence suggests the penis is no different in this regard. Despite the general agreement that sexual selection is the main driver of penis evolution, many quest
