Prolonged anterior shear loading may contribute to disc degeneration by damaging the annulus fibrosus. To address this, annular mechanical properties were quantified following static shear loading using a porcine model. Twelve porcine cervical motion segments were dissected, with posterior bony elements removed to isolate shear to the intervertebral disc. Specimens were randomized into two conditions: (1) shear-loaded (100 N static anterior shear applied to C3/C4, n = 6) or (2) control (0 N, n = 6). Shear force was applied via a pin through C4, secured to a testing system to prevent rotation,

An economically efficient yet safe design of concrete structures under high-cycle fatigue loading is a rather complex task. One of the main reasons is the insufficient understanding of the fatigue damage phenomenology of concrete. A promising hypothesis states that the evolution of fatigue damage in concrete at subcritical load levels is governed by a cumulative measure of shear sliding. To evaluate this hypothesis, an experimental program was developed which systematically investigates the fatigue behavior of high-strength concrete under mode II loading using newly adapted punch through shear

Steady flow simulations of blood flow in an axisymmetric stenosed artery, subjected to a static magnetic field, are performed to investigate the influence of artery size, magnetic field strength, and non-Newtonian behavior on artery wall shear stress and pressure drop in the stenosed section. It is found that wall shear stress and pressure drop increase by decreasing artery size, assuming non-Newtonian fluid, and increasing magnetic field strength. In the computations, the shear thinning behavior of blood is accounted for by the Carreau-Yasuda model. Computational results are compared and foun

Bacterial swimming is well characterized in uniform liquids at rest. The natural habitat of bacterial swimmers, however, is often dominated by moving fluids and interfaces, resulting in shear flows that may strongly alter bacterial navigation strategies. Here, we study how fluid shear flow affects the swimming motility of the soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida, a bacterial swimmer that moves in a versatile pattern composed of three different swimming modes, where the flagella may push, pull, or wrap around the cell body (multi-mode swimmer). We introduce a computer automated cell tracking and s

This study systematically investigates the effects of two hydraulic pathways-wetting followed by loading (W-L) and loading followed by wetting (L-W)-on the water retention and strength characteristics of intact loess from a Xi'an metro line. Using an improved unsaturated triaxial testing system, experiments were conducted under controlled suction, net confining pressure, and shear stress levels. The Van Genuchten model accurately describes the water retention behavior, with the saturation-suction ratio (s/Sc) exhibiting a linear relationship. The Critical State Line (CSL) for the L-W pathway e

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is an irreversible dilation of the abdominal aorta that carries a significant risk of rupture if not adequately screened and treated. This condition poses a severe threat, with a mortality rate exceeding 80% in certain age groups. The enlargement of the abdominal aorta leads to notable hemodynamic alterations in AAAs, characterized by flow separation and vortical structures. Current understanding acknowledges a correlation between the growth and rupture mechanisms of AAA and the disturbed hemodynamics, emphasizing metrics such as time-averaged wall shear stress

Starch adhesive is a commonly used bonding glue that is sustainable, formaldehyde-free and biodegradable. However, there are obviously some problems related to its high viscosity, poor water and mildew resistance. Hence, exploring a starch-based adhesive with good properties that satisfies the requirements of wood processing presents the context of the current research. Thus, corn starch was used as raw material to form oxidized starch (OCS) via oxidation using sodium periodate, it was reacted with a synthesis polyurea compound that prepared from hexanediamine-urea (HU) obtained by deamination

Patients with transtibial amputation experience ulcers on their residual limb. The loading between the device and underlying material plays a role in loads transmitted to the skin. The objective was to evaluate normal and shear forces at the socket/liner interface during walking. A 53 year old male (85.45 kg and 177.8 cm) with a transtibial amputation participated in this case study. A transtibial prosthesis was instrumented with a load cell to measure normal and shear forces at the socket interface. Three conditions were evaluated during walking: gel liner, additional three ply sock and a hol

The ability to predict the timescale of thrombotic occlusion in stenotic vessels may improve patient risk assessment for thrombotic events. In blood contacting devices, thrombosis predictions can lead to improved designs to minimize thrombotic risks. We have developed and validated a model of high shear thrombosis based on empirical correlations between thrombus growth and shear rate. A mathematical model was developed to predict the growth of thrombus based on the hemodynamic shear rate. The model predicts thrombus deposition based on initial geometric and fluid mechanic conditions, which are

Hemodynamics are believed to play an important role in the initiation of cerebral aneurysms. In particular, studies have focused on wall shear stress (WSS), which is a key regulator of vascular biology and pathology. In line with the observation that aneurysms predominantly occur at regions of high WSS, such as bifurcation apices or outer walls of vascular bends, correlations have been found between the aneurysm initiation site and high WSS. The aim of our study was to analyze the WSS field at an aneurysm initiation site that was neither a bifurcation apex nor the outer wall of a vascular bend

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a condition in which an individual inherits one sickle hemoglobin gene (HbS) and one normal beta hemoglobin gene (HbA). It has been hypothesized that under extreme physical stress, the compromised mechanical properties of the red blood cells (RBCs) may be the underlying mechanism of clinical complications of sickle cell trait individuals. However, whether sickle cell trait (SCT) should be treated as physiologically normal remains controversial. In this work, the mechanical properties (i.e., shear modulus and viscosity) of individual RBCs were quantified using a micro

A novel, non-invasive method to diagnose bladder outlet obstruction involves the recording of noise with a contact microphone pressed against the perineum (between anus and scrotum). This noise results from flow-generated vortices caused by prostatic obstruction. We developed a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) urethral model including urethral geometry to study the relation between generated noise and the degree of obstruction. This model comprised a bladder, bladder neck, prostate and urethra. Calculations were carried out at four bladder pressures, five degrees of obstruction and three obst

Polycrystalline aragonite exhibits a striking mechanical scale transition: single crystals reach tensile and shear strengths of 4-6 GPa, yet micropillar compression experiments on polycrystalline specimens fail near 462 MPa, indicating that interfaces rather than lattice defects govern macroscopic behaviour. Using molecular dynamics simulations with a force field validated to within 5% of experimental elastic constants, we determine atomistic deformation and failure mechanisms in three limiting interface types: crystalline twins, hydrated protein-mediated interfaces, and water-separated minera

The patchy distribution of atherosclerosis within arteries implies the existence of local risk factors that control its development. Many hypotheses suggest a role for hemodynamic wall shear stress (WSS), but there is disagreement about which particular characteristics of WSS correlate spatially with the prevalence of lesions. This review considers why such confusion persists despite much research over many decades. Possibilities include the large changes in lesion prevalence that occur over short distances, the inadequate spatial resolution of methods for measuring near-wall flow, the computa

OBJECTIVE: To characterise and compare the effectiveness of sacral dressings at alleviating the transfer of shear forces to the skin and, therefore, to lower the risk of and prevent pressure injury (PI) development in bed-based patients.
METHOD: Dressings were evaluated against a ratio of applied to transferred shear and peak shear force observed on the skin. The evaluation was undertaken using a custom benchtop in vitro experimental setup replicating the skin-bedsheet interface. Forces were applied using an automated test rig within which a pair of load cells (ATI Nano-17; ATI Industrial Aut

Aluminum dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) adhesives, known for their non-toxicity, simple preparation, low cost, and exceptional thermal stability, are considered a promising alternative to formaldehyde-based adhesives. However, their industrial application is limited by the need for a high curing temperature. This study introduces a novel adhesive based on the ADP modified by gelatinized starch (GS), with alumina (Al₂O₃) as a filler, which can be prepared through simple solid-liquid mixing. GS and ADP form covalent cross-links at room temperature, and the incorporation of Al₂O₃ significantly reduce
