The influence of motion control shoes on the running gait of mature and young females.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the running gait of mature and young females, and investigated the effect of a motion control shoe. First, it was hypothesised that in a neutral shoe, mature females would display significantly greater rearfoot eversion, knee internal rotation and external adductor moments when compared to a younger group. Secondly, the motion control shoe would reduce rearfoot eversion and knee internal rotation in both groups. Thirdly it was hypothesised that the motion control shoe would increase knee external adductor moment, through an increase in knee varus and moment arm.

The Effects of Shoe Sole Thickness on Running Biomechanics and Economy: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Advanced footwear technologies (AFT) are popular for their potential performance benefits, though concerns about injury risks persist. Among various AFT features, sole thickness is particularly debated, especially after World Athletics imposed a 40 mm limit to prevent unfair competitive advantages. However, the effects of sole thickness on running biomechanics and economy are not well understood, particularly because sole thickness often co-varies with other shoe characteristics in shoe designs. OBJECTIVE: This review examines the effects of sole thickness on spatiotemporal variab

Effect of luggage type on gait parameters using in-shoe motion sensors.

Walking with luggage is a common daily activity. While its effects on gait and posture have been explored, most findings are based on laboratory measurements rather than real-world conditions. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the effects of walking with luggage on gait and posture in everyday environments using an in-shoe motion sensor system. Gait parameters of 26 healthy, pain-free young adults were assessed over a 10-minute period under four conditions: no luggage, using a backpack, a shoulder bag, and a crossbody bag. Gait data were recorded at 2-minute intervals using an in

A Review of the Evidence on the Role of Floors and Shoes in the Dissemination of Pathogens in a Healthcare Setting.

Background: It is generally accepted that shoes and floors are contaminated with pathogens including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), and Clostridium difficile, yet correlation to clinical infection is not well established. Because floors and shoes are low-touch surfaces, these are considered non-critical surfaces for cleaning and disinfection. The purpose of this review is to assess peer-reviewed literature inclusive of floors and shoe soles as contributors to the dissemination of infectious pathogens within healthcare settings. Metho

Thermo-mechanical coupling characteristics of the shearer's guiding shoe during the friction.

The reliability and longevity of the guiding shoe are crucial for the proper functioning of coal mining machines. The heavy wear of the sliding surface under thermal stress coupling is the primary factor influencing the service life of the guiding shoe. To reveal the heat flow distribution patterns and the thermo-stress coupling mechanisms of the guiding surface, a thermo-mechanical coupling model of the guiding shoe and the pin row is established. The transient thermodynamic behavior of the guiding shoe under different load and speed conditions is studied using the coupled temp-displacement a

Nonunion After First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Arthrodesis: The Association With Shoe Size.

INTRODUCTION: First metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) arthrodesis is a common treatment for various foot conditions, with nonunion as a frequent complication. The incidence of nonunion varies widely in the literature. In particular, males have a higher risk of nonunion than females. This is possibly due to biomechanical and anatomical differences, as men have on average larger feet than women. This study therefore aims to explore whether shoe size, as a proxy for foot size, affects nonunion rates and could explain the gender disparity in nonunion rates. METHODOLOGY: An exploratory analysis of

Artificial neural networks in the selection of shoe lasts for people with mild diabetes.

This research addressed the selection of shoe lasts for footwear design to help relieve the pain associated with diabetic neuropathy and foot ulcers. A reverse engineering (RE) technique was used to convert point clouds corresponding to scanned shoe lasts and diabetic foot data into stereo lithograph (STL) meshes. A slicing algorithm was developed and was used to find relevant girth features of diabetic foot and the shoe lasts. An artificial neural network, termed self-organizing map (SOM), classified 60 sets of shoe lasts into similar groups. Foot shapes of three mild diabetic patients were e

Influence of high-heeled shoes on the sagittal balance of the spine and the whole body.

PURPOSE: Wearing high heels is associated with chronic pain of the neck, lower back and knees. The mechanisms behind this have not been fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of high-heeled shoes on the sagittal balance of the spine and the whole body in non-habitual wearers of high heels. METHODS: Lateral standing whole body low-dose radiographs were obtained from 23 female participants (age 29 ± 6 years) with and without high heels and radiological parameters describing the sagittal balance were quantified. These were analyzed for differences between bo

Biological monitoring of n-hexane exposure in Portuguese shoe manufacturing workers.

Occupational risk of exposure to organic solvents concerned many shoe manufacturing workers. The most common organic solvents found in workplace environments were n-hexane and others hexane isomers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the exposure of shoe manufacturing workers to n-hexane, with 2,5 hexanedione in urine (2,5HD) as a biomarker and to investigate effect in 2,5 HD excretion of the co-exposure to other organic solvents. Post-shift urine samples from workers who performed gluing tasks (n = 45) in five shoe manufacturers were collected, as well as urine samples from a similar numbe

Use of wooden shoes for the treatment of chronic laminitis in an American quarter horse.

An 11-year-old American quarter horse mare with bilateral forelimb lameness was examined at a mixed-animal veterinary clinic. Radiographs revealed rotation and distal displacement of the 3rd phalanx in each front foot, confirming chronic laminitis. Wooden shoes (Steward Clogs) were used successfully to manage the lameness. The findings from this case support the use of wooden shoes as part of the treatment of chronic laminitis in a general veterinary practice setting.

Biomechanics of running: A special reference to the comparisons of wearing boots and running shoes.

Boots are often used in sports, occupations, and rehabilitation. However, there are few studies on the biomechanical alterations after wearing boots. The current study aimed to compare the effects of running shoes and boots on running biomechanics. Kinematics and ground reaction forces were recorded from 17 healthy males during running at 3.3 m/s with shoe and boot conditions. Temporal distance gait variables, ground reaction force components as well as lower limb joints angle, moment, and power were compared using Paired t-test and Statistical Parametric Mapping package for time-series analys

Effect of Shoe and Surface Stiffness on Lower Limb Tendon Strain in Jumping.

BACKGROUND: Tendinopathies are painful overuse injuries observed in athletes participating in jumping sports. These injuries are heavily dependent on the resulting strain from the applied mechanical load. Therefore, mechanisms to reduce tendon strain may represent a primary prevention strategy to reduce the incidence of tendinopathy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of shoe and surface stiffness on Achilles and patellar tendon strains during jumping. We hypothesized that less stiff shoes and surfaces would reduce Achilles and patellar tendon strains during jumping.

A Human Right to Shoes? Establishing Rights and Duties in the Prevention and Treatment of Podoconiosis.

Podoconiosis is a debilitating chronic swelling of the foot and lower leg caused by long-term exposure to irritant red volcanic clay soil in the highland regions of Africa, Central America, and India. In this paper, we consider the human rights violations that cause, and are caused by, podoconiosis in Ethiopia. Specifically, we discuss the way in which the right to an adequate basic standard of living is not met in endemic regions, where the following basic necessities are not readily available: appropriate footwear, health education, and affordable, accessible health care. Those living with p
