Primary Necrobiotic Xanthogranulomatous Sialadenitis with Submandibular Gland Localization without Skin Involvement.

Necrobiotic xanthogranulomatous reaction is a multiorgan, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis with an unknown etiology. Occurrence in the salivary gland is extremely rare. We recently identified a case of necrobiotic xanthogranulomatous sialadenitis in a 73-year-old Korean woman who presented with a painless palpable lesion in the chin. There was no accompanying cutaneous lesion. Partial resection and subsequent wide excision with neck dissection were performed. Pathological examination showed a severe inflammatory lesion that included foamy macrophages centrally admixed with neutrophils, eosino

Acute unilateral post-operative submandibular sialadenitis following posterior cranial fossa surgery.

Extreme degree of rotation and flexion of the head during posterior fossa surgeries can lead to acute post-operative submandibular sialadenitis that can cause respiratory compromise. Identification of this problem is vital to prevent deterioration in the early post-operative period. This condition responds well to conservative management provided airway obstruction is taken care of. We discuss a case of a 63-year-old female, with a left side vestibular schwannoma who developed airway obstruction in post-operative period due to swelling of right submandibular gland. Various possible mechanisms

Massive sialadenitis resulting in critical airway after elective craniotomy: case report.

The authors report an unusual case of acute, rapidly progressive, unilateral neck swelling following extubation after elective left anterior temporal lobectomy with amygdalohippocampectomy. Due to severe neck swelling, the patient developed critical airway compromise, brachial plexopathy, and Horner's syndrome. After critical airway management and appropriate rehabilitation, the patient recovered completely and remains seizure free at 1.5 years of follow-up. This case highlights the importance of early recognition of acute postoperative sialadenitis and the steps needed to prevent serious morb

Iodide mumps: a case report of complicated radioactive iodine causing sialadenitis.

Radiation sialadenitis is an uncommon adverse reaction to radioactive iodide therapy. Sialadenitis due to radiation exposure has a dose-related damage that can follow an acute or chronic inflammatory nature. We present a case of a patient who developed radiation sialadenitis after radioactive iodide therapy for papillary thyroid cancer resulting in severe parotid swelling and swelling, which resulted in an emergency department visit and had complete resolution with conservative management.

Salivary simulation with ascorbic acid enhances sonographic diagnosis of obstructive sialadenitis.

PURPOSE: High-frequency ultrasound (US) is routinely used to evaluate various diseases of the salivary glands. Normally, the duct network of the submandibular and parotid glands is not visible during US assessment. In obstructive sialadenitis of the parotid and submandibular glands, localization of the obstacle is often difficult. METHODS: In a case-control study, the sonographic visibility of the duct before and after stimulation with oral ascorbic acid (vitamin C) was compared with sialendoscopy as the gold standard. Twenty male and 23 female patients suffering from salivary gland diseases

Kuttner tumour (chronic sclerosing sialadenitis) of the submandibular gland: sonographic appearances.

Patients with Kuttner tumours present with clinical features simulating a submandibular tumour. This article aims to familiarise sonologists with the sonographic appearances of these tumours, to help in their differentiation from other salivary lesions. In 13 patients with histologically or cytologically proven Kuttner tumours, the features evaluated on sonography included: shape and border of the gland, internal architecture, duct dilatation, presence/absence of calculi and presence and distribution of vascularity. There was diffuse involvement of the submandibular glands in 11 patients and f

[Clinical and Histological aspects concerning the myo-epithelial sialadenitis (author's transl)].

Different aspects necessary for the diagnosis of chronic lymphoidocytic myo-epethelial sialoadenitis are discussed. Histological facts are especially mentioned. The prognosis of this disease is dimmed by a frequent appearance of malignant lymphomas. The case of a Sjögren-disease in a seven-year-old male patient is presented.

Ocular facial myositis and sialadenitis presenting with new onset ulcerative colitis.

Extra-intestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can involve most organ systems, although the immunologic underpinnings are not well understood. Most patients who present with an extra-intestinal manifestation have a single site of extra-intestinal involvement; however, a small cohort presents with multiple different sites of involvement. Ocular and facial muscle and salivary gland involvements are rarely seen in IBD, especially in children with ulcerative colitis (UC). In this study, we describe a case of ocular facial myositis and sialadenitis in a child with new-onset UC.

Contrast-induced sialadenitis associated with neuroendovascular aneurysm embolization: Two illustrative cases.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced sialadenitis is a rare inflammatory response to iodinated contrast that may present as acute parotid or submandibular swelling. Its mechanism remains poorly defined, making prompt recognition after neuroendovascular procedures essential. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two patients developed acute neck swelling after elective endovascular treatment of unruptured intracranial aneurysms with iopamidol. The first underwent flow-diverter placement for a right paraclinoid internal carotid artery aneurysm using 140 mL of contrast and developed right cervical swelling within hours. Co

IgG4-related sialadenitis - a rare bilateral submandibular gland enlargement: case report.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a fibroinflammatory condition of unknown etiology. Although the salivary glands are currently considered among the most commonly affected among them, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are generally not familiar with the condition. Enlargement of the major salivary glands may be the first identifiable sign of IgG4-RD. A salivary gland biopsy along with IgG4 serum level assessment may help differentiate IgG4-related sialadenitis (IgG4-RS) from malignancies, infectious diseases, and obstructive conditions. Greater knowledge and higher levels of awarene

Contralateral sialadenitis after resection of a right cerebellar metastasis: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Acute postoperative sialadenitis is a rare and potentially morbid complication of cranial neurosurgery. This rapidly progressive, unilateral neck swelling often presents within hours of extubation. Diagnosis is made by imaging and exclusion of other causes of etiologies, such as neck hematoma, sialolithiasis, and dependent soft tissue edema. OBSERVATIONS: The authors presented a case of acute postoperative sialadenitis after suboccipital resection of a right cerebellar metastasis. Shortly after extubation, extensive left-sided neck swelling was apparent in the postanesthesia care

Chronic sialadenitis with marked lymphadenopathy mimicking lymphoma on FDG PET/CT.

A 53-year-old woman with bilateral proptosis and diffuse lymphadenopathy had FDG PET/CT for the evaluation of lymphoma. There were significant enlargements of the lacrimal glands, thickening of the intraorbital muscles, prominent parotid/submandibular glands, and FDG-avid lymphadenopathy in the neck, right axilla, and mediastinum. The findings were suggestive of either lymphoma or sarcoidosis. Subsequent biopsy of the left lacrimal gland revealed chronic inflammation with lymphoid aggregate formation, atrophy, and fibrosis consistent with chronic sialadenitis, and an incisional biopsy of the c

Clinical features and treatment outcomes of immunoglobulin g4-related sclerosing sialadenitis.

Idiopathic enlargement of salivary glands used to be confusing in diagnosis until immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related sclerosing sialadenitis was proposed as a possible answer. In this case series, we reported the clinical features and management outcomes in 16 patients with IgG4-related sclerosing sialadenitis. We retrospectively studied 16 patients in clinical examination, serology, pathology, and sonography features. All patients were treated by corticosteroids and followed up for at least 3 months. The results of clinical features showed that all of the patients presented persistent, symmetri

Imaging findings of "anesthesia mumps" (acute postoperative sialadenitis) after general anesthesia.

We present a rare case of acute postoperative sialadenitis or "anesthesia mumps" necessitating emergent intubation in a 16-year-old girl after biopsy of a brainstem mass under general anesthesia. Postoperative computed tomography of the brain demonstrated extensive right-sided facial swelling, parotid gland enlargement, and pharyngeal edema extending to the parapharyngeal space, soft palate, and uvula with significant narrowing of the airway. To our knowledge, this entity has not been previously described in the radiologic literature.

Magnetic resonance imaging of experimentally-induced sialadenitis in rat submandibular glands.

OBJECTIVES: To correlate the features of magnetic resonance (MR) images of experimentally induced obstructive sialadenitis in rat submandibular glands with the histopathological changes. METHODS: Changes in MR images of ligated and non-ligated rat submandibular glands were compared with the histopathological changes and wet weight ratios. Spin echo T1 weighted images (SE T1WI), fast spin echo T2 weighted images (FSE T2WI), and gradient echo T2 weighted images (GE T2WI) were obtained at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 21 days after duct ligation with a 0.3 T MR imaging system.
