Implementation of a fast method for measuring psychophysical tuning curves.

OBJECTIVE: To implement a fast method for measuring psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) for use in clinical applications, such as assessment of frequency selectivity and detection of dead regions in the cochlea. DESIGN: The method is based on that described by Sek et al (2005) and has been implemented in software that can be run on a PC with a good-quality sound card. In addition to the main narrowband noise masker, a lowpass noise masker can be generated to prevent detection of a distortion band corresponding to the simple difference tone. RESULTS: The software includes a routine for measur

Predicting auditory tone-in-noise detection performance: the effects of neural variability.

Collecting and analyzing psychophysical data is a fundamental mechanism for the study of auditory processing. However, because this approach relies on human listening experiments, it can be costly in terms of time and money spent gathering the data. The development of a theoretical, model-based procedure capable of accurately predicting psychophysical behavior could alleviate these issues by enabling researchers to rapidly evaluate hypotheses prior to conducting experiments. This approach may also provide additional insight into auditory processing by establishing a link between psychophysical

'CatWalk' automated quantitative gait analysis as a novel method to assess mechanical allodynia in the rat; a comparison with von Frey testing.

A characteristic symptom of neuropathic pain is mechanical allodynia. In animal models of neuropathic pain, mechanical allodynia is often assessed using von Frey filaments. Although the forces applied with these filaments are highly reproducible, there are various disadvantages of using this method. Testing paradigms and definitions of withdrawal threshold are not standardised. Moreover, measurements may be influenced by various conditions, such as ambient temperature, humidity, weight bearing of the limb and stress. We have therefore investigated another technique to assess mechanical allodyn

Neural networks applied to retrocochlear diagnosis.

Methodologies have been developed, based on insights from signal detection theory, to evaluate quantitatively the diagnostic performance of tests. Several studies have demonstrated that, in fact, performance of a test battery can be inferior to the best of the tests it includes. These studies have been quite persuasive in damping enthusiasm for the test battery approach. Because the results of all tests in a battery were weighted equally in these studies, it is not surprising that an individual test with good sensitivity and specificity is more effective diagnostically than a combination of te

Ostracism.

In this review, I examine the social psychological research on ostracism, social exclusion, and rejection. Being ignored, excluded, and/or rejected signals a threat for which reflexive detection in the form of pain and distress is adaptive for survival. Brief ostracism episodes result in sadness and anger and threaten fundamental needs. Individuals then act to fortify or replenish their thwarted need or needs. Behavioral consequences appear to be split into two general categories: attempts to fortify relational needs (belonging, self-esteem, shared understanding, and trust), which lead general

The dark side of the white coat: startle potentiation and memory bias in patients with illness-related anxiety and controls - A cross-sectional psychophysiological study.

BACKGROUND: Medical settings can trigger anxiety and thereby impact patients' health outcomes, as illustrated by the white-coat effect (i.e., hypertension in the presence of medical staff). However, the psychological mechanisms and individual differences underlying such nocebo-like responses remain poorly understood. The present study investigated the implicit cognitive and emotional processing of white-coat representations in healthy controls and patients with chronic heart-failure and varying levels of illness-related anxiety (IA). METHOD: Startle eyeblink modulation by pictures of clinical

Do end of treatment assessments predict outcome at follow-up in eating disorders?

OBJECTIVE: To examine the predictive value of end of treatment (EOT) outcomes for longer term recovery status. METHOD: We used signal detection analysis to identify the best predictors of recovery based on outcome at EOT using five different eating disorder samples from randomized clinical treatment trials. We utilized a transdiagnostic definition of recovery that included normalization of weight and eating related psychopathology. RESULTS: Achieving a body weight of 95.2% of expected body weight by EOT is the best predictor of recovery for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). For adults

Characterizing auditory processing and perception in individual listeners with sensorineural hearing loss.

This study considered consequences of sensorineural hearing loss in ten listeners. The characterization of individual hearing loss was based on psychoacoustic data addressing audiometric pure-tone sensitivity, cochlear compression, frequency selectivity, temporal resolution, and intensity discrimination. In the experiments it was found that listeners with comparable audiograms can show very different results in the supra-threshold measures. In an attempt to account for the observed individual data, a model of auditory signal processing and perception [Jepsen et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124, 42

Speech-based depression detection using higher-order spectral features and a multi-level transformer.

A precise and prompt automated depression detection system utilizing auditory signals is essential, considering the scarcity of psychiatrists and the exorbitant expense of clinical diagnosis, resulting in approximately 60% of psychiatric patients globally lacking access to mental health care. This study proposes a Depression Detection model utilizing voice, which integrates hierarchical higher-order spectral distribution with deep learning models to overcome these issues. The utilized dataset is the Distress Analysis Interview Corpus, Wizard of Oz (DAIC-WOZ), comprising audio recordings of cli

Amplitude of low frequency fluctuation in primary open angle glaucoma: a resting state fMRI study.

Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is a kind of progressive neuropathy with no clear cause. In the present fMRI study, a data-driven approach was employed to map the alteration of regional spontaneous activity in POAG patients by measuring the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) of the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal. Twenty one POAG patients and 22 age and gender matched healthy subjects participated in this study. We found that the abnormal ALFF values in the POAG patients compared with healthy controls were not only detected in the visual regions but also across the who

Visual search improvement in hemianopic patients after audio-visual stimulation.

One of the most effective techniques in the rehabilitation of visual field defects is based on implementation of oculomotor strategies to compensate for visual field loss. In the present study we develop a new rehabilitation approach based on the audio-visual stimulation of the visual field. Since it has been demonstrated that audio-visual interaction in multisensory neurons can improve temporally visual perception in patients with hemianopia, the aim of the present study was to verify whether a systematic audio-visual stimulation might induce a long-lasting amelioration of visual field disord

From partner synchrony to corner support: interpersonal co-regulation and performance recovery in DanceSport and boxing.

Sport psychology has often treated performance regulation as predominantly intrapersonal, yet competitive recovery can also be shaped by relational information. This Conceptual Analysis introduces the Relational Co-Regulation and Performance Recovery (RCPR) Model, a perturbation-centered framework for explaining how partner- and coach-generated inputs may alter recovery after within-competition disruption. Crucially, relational regulatory input is defined independently of success: an observable signal is a regulatory attempt because of its timing, content, and plausible task function, not beca

Is the Safety of Finasteride Correlated With Its Route of Administration: Topical Versus Oral? A Pharmacovigilance Study With Data From the United States Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System.

BACKGROUND: The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved oral finasteride for androgenetic alopecia. In 2022, approximately 2.6 million U.S. men used it for hair loss and prostate conditions. Post-finasteride syndrome (PFS), proposed in 2012, involves persistent sexual and neuropsychiatric adverse events (AEs) after cessation. These AEs are controversial and often lack assessment of contributing risk factors. We analyzed FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) data to explore finasteride's administration route and PFS-like AEs. METHODS: Using the information component (IC)

Hormonal mechanisms and the optimal use of luteinizing hormone tests in human menstrual cycle research.

Tests of whether women's psychology or behavior shifts during the fertile window vs. other cycle phase regions often employ a design in which fertile window test sessions are scheduled after a positive urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) test result. Lobmaier and Bachofner (2018) point out that this design will schedule high fecundity test sessions at the very end of the fertile window, if not later, when fecundity is not at its highest. I agree with their arguments, and here argue that the problems with this scheduling technique appear even more severe if one considers the hormonal mechanisms th

Effect of efferent activation on binaural frequency selectivity.

Binaural notched-noise experiments indicate a reduced frequency selectivity of the binaural system compared to monaural processing. The present study investigates how auditory efferent activation (via the medial olivocochlear system) affects binaural frequency selectivity in normal-hearing listeners. Thresholds were measured for a 1-kHz signal embedded in a diotic notched-noise masker for various notch widths. The signal was either presented in phase (diotic) or in antiphase (dichotic), gated with the noise. Stimulus duration was 25 ms, in order to avoid efferent activation due to the masker o

Functional signalers of changes in visual stimuli: cortical responses to increments and decrements in motion coherence.

How does our brain detect changes in a natural scene? While changes by increments of specific visual attributes, such as contrast or motion coherence, can be signaled by an increase in neuronal activity in early visual areas, like the primary visual cortex (V1) or the human middle temporal complex (hMT+), respectively, the mechanisms for signaling changes resulting from decrements in a stimulus attribute are largely unknown. We have discovered opposing patterns of cortical responses to changes in motion coherence: unlike areas hMT+, V3A and parieto-occipital complex (V6+) that respond to chang

Rate change detection of frequency modulated signals: developmental trends.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine developmental trends in rate change detection of auditory rhythmic signals (repetitive sinusoidally frequency modulated tones). METHODS: Two groups of children (9-10 years old and 11-12 years old) and one group of young adults performed a rate change detection (RCD) task using three types of stimuli. The rate of stimulus modulation was either constant (CR), raised by 1 Hz in the middle of the stimulus (RR1) or raised by 2 Hz in the middle of the stimulus (RR2). RESULTS: Performance on the RCD task significantly improved with age. Also, the dif

Using signal detection theory to model changes in serial learning of radiological image interpretation.

Signal detection theory (SDT) parameters can describe a learner's ability to discriminate (d') normal from abnormal and the learner's criterion (λ) to under or overcall abnormalities. To examine the serial changes in SDT parameters with serial exposure to radiological cases. 46 participants were recruited for this study: 20 medical students (MED), 6 residents (RES), 12 fellows (FEL), 5 staff pediatric emergency physicians (PEM), and 3 staff radiologists (RAD). Each participant was presented with 234 randomly assigned ankle radiographs using a web-based application. Participants were given a cl

Multisensory integration and ADHD-like traits: Evidence for an abnormal temporal integration window in ADHD.

Abnormalities in multimodal processing have been found in many developmental disorders such as autism and dyslexia. However, surprisingly little empirical work has been conducted to test the integrity of multisensory integration in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The main aim of the present study was to examine links between symptoms of ADHD (as measured using a self-report scale in a healthy adult population) and the temporal aspects of multisensory processing. More specifically, a Simultaneity Judgement (SJ) and a Temporal Order Judgement (TOJ) task were used in participants

Psychophysical and neurometric detection performance under stimulus uncertainty.

Signal detection theoretical analyses of spike counts have revealed that some cortical neurons can exceed psychophysical sensitivity in cases where a sensory signal is specified exactly. It is not known whether this finding holds in the more natural situation where signal occurrence is temporally uncertain. We investigated the ability of rat barrel cortex neurons to detect faint and transient whisker deflections occurring at unspecified times. The progression from fully specified stimuli to temporal uncertainty degraded neuronal sensitivity such that it seems highly unlikely that single neuron
