The purpose of this study was to determine if use of an intranasal vasoconstrictor (oxymetazoline) could be used to effectively treat epistaxis, avoiding nasal packing. The charts of 60 patients who presented to the emergency room with the diagnosis of epistaxis and who required medical management were reviewed. Sixty-five percent of these patients were successfully managed with oxymetazoline as their sole therapy. Multiple theories of the cause and treatment of aphthous ulcers are described in the medical and dental literature. A case is reported in which there were posttreatment sequelae from the application of a sillver-nitrate stick (pencil) to an aphthous ulcer on the tongue. Compications subsequent to the use of silver nitrate may contraindicate the use of this agent in its highly concentrated form on the mucous membranes of the mouth.

Superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory disease of the superior tarsal, bulbar and limbal conjunctiva that often responds to topical treatment with silver nitrate. As an alternative treatment in 11 patients (13 eyes), we applied thermal cautery to the inflamed superior bulbar conjunctiva following subconjunctival injection of 2% xylocaine. The aim of this study was to determine any occupationally relevant allergic contact sensitizations in hand dermatitis in a jeweler. Patch test with European Standard, vehicle, medicaments, and metal series (Finn chambers on Scanpor) was performed. Readings were taken on day 2 and day 4. Allergic positive reaction to colophonium 20% pet and silver nitrate 0.5% aq was detected. The contact sensitivities to silver and colophonium seem to be occupationally relevant in this case.

Adding 900 p.p.m. silver (as silver nitrate) to a practical diet for chicks significantly depressed growth, increased wet and dry heart weight to body weight ratios and markedly increased mortality during a four-week experimental period. Dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), the anhydride of nitric acid, was synthesised by Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville in Paris in 1849 using silver nitrate and chlorine gas. Herein, we revisit, optimise, and modify Deville's method using photocatalysis to enable a safe, clean, practical, and reproducible alternative for N2O5 synthesis in quantitative yields. OBJECTIVE: Study on the impact of medical wound dressing compositions on reference strains of microorganisms in vitro conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study compared the antimicrobial activity of three types of dressing materials (DM): iodoform gauze bandage, DM with furagin and sodium alginate, DM from hydrogel with dimexide and silver nitrates. Gauze bandage with chlorhexidine was used as a control.
