Trichomycete symbiotes of Crozetia seguyi, a primitive black fly.

Crozetia is a genus of black flies endemic to the Crozet Islands in the Indian Ocean. No internal symbiotes were previously known from Crozetia species. We report two species of trichomycete symbiotes Stachylina litoralis and Smittium culicisoides from Crozetia seguyi. Larvae of C. seguyi were examined from three sites. The infection rates for St. litoralis was 10.0-33.3% (n=47) of the larvae and Sm. culicisoides was 46.1-85.7% (n=47). No other symbiotes were discovered.

Sibling species distributions of the Simulium damnosum complex in the west African Onchocerciasis Control Programme area during the decade 1984-93, following intensive larviciding since 1974.

During the decade from 1984 to 1993, nine species of the Simulium damnosum complex of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) were identified from the area covered by the Onchocerciasis Control Programme. These were S. damnosum s.s., S. dieguerense, S. konkourense, S. leonense, S. sanctipauli, S. sirbanum, S. soubrense, S. squamosum, and S. yahense. Some of these species were found to consist of two chromosomal variant populations. These were S. konkourense 'Konkouré' and 'Menankaya' forms, S. sanctipauli sensu stricto and 'Djodji' form, S. soubrense 'Chute Milo' and 'Beffa' forms. The distribution o

Seasonal variation in onchocerciasis transmission in the Santiago focus of Ecuador.

Man-biting rates and natural infection rates with filariae were determined for anthropophilic black flies in a preliminary survey during the wet and dry seasons at three localities, either hypoendemic or hyperendemic for onchocerciasis, in the Santiago onchocerciasis focus of Ecuador. Simulium exiguum was an efficient vector associated with hyperendemicity whereas S. quadrivittatum was thought only to sporadically transmit the parasite. Parasite transmission by these two species varied seasonally. Two other man-biting species, S. bipunctatum and S. escomeli, were discounted as vectors because

Micro-CT imaging of Onchocerca infection of Simulium damnosum s.l. blackflies and comparison of the peritrophic membrane thickness of forest and savannah flies.

Onchocerciasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by Onchocerca Diesing 1841 (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) nematodes transmitted by blackflies. It is associated with poverty and imposes a significant health, welfare and economic burden on many tropical countries. Current methods to visualize infections within the vectors rely on invasive methods. However, using micro-computed tomography techniques, without interference from physical tissue manipulation, we visualized in three dimensions for the first time an L1 larva of an Onchocerca species within the thoracic musculature of a blackfly

Mansonella ozzardi in Amazonas, Brazil: prevalence and distribution in the municipality of Coari, in the middle Solimões River.

This study investigated some epidemiological aspects of the Mansonella ozzardi in municipality of Coari, Amazonas. Clinical symptoms were correlated with the filarial infection and the parasitic infection rates (PIR) were estimated in simuliid vectors. The general M. ozzardi human prevalence rate was 13.3% (231/1733), of which 10.2% (109/1069) were from the urban area and 18.4% (122/664) from the rural area. The prevalence rates were higher in men (14.5% urban and 19.7% rural) than in women (6.7% urban and 17.2% rural) and occurred in most age groups. The indices of microfilaremics were higher

The species delimitation problem in the Simulium damnosum complex, blackfly vectors of onchocerciasis.

The Simulium damnosum Theobald complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) comprises 57 cytoforms grouped into six subcomplexes. Previous phylogenetic studies using gene sequences have not completely resolved the evolutionary relationships of the cytoforms. The present study investigated the systematics of the complex using a phylogeographic approach. The differentiation between eastern and western forms observed in the phylogenetic studies is confirmed in the estimated haplotype networks. However, haplotypes tend to group in geographical clades and not according to cytoforms. Spatial analyses of the molecu

Valorization of Spirulina residue via black soldier fly larvae: Unraveling metabolic rewiring for optimized protein, lipid, and vitamin biosynthesis.

This study evaluated the potential of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) for bioconverting Spirulina residue (SR) and the regulatory impacts of SR on BSFL quality. Multiscale analyses revealed that SR significantly improved the growth performance of BSFL, with a 9.8% increase in final larval weight and a 28.8% enhancement in bioconversion efficiency. Nutritionally, SR supplementation elevated the essential amino acid index by 28.0%, driven by a remarkable enrichment of branched-chain amino acids (e.g., valine increased by 1160%). The n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content increased by 23.9

Onchocerciasis elimination mapping in Malawi: mapping of vector Simulium breeding sites using an integrated approach of community knowledge and topographical maps.

BACKGROUND: Large areas in Malawi have not been treated for onchocerciasis. To understand whether to provide treatment in these areas of unknown onchocerciasis endemicity, the Malawi Onchocerciasis Control Program conducted identification and mapping of breeding sites as a prerequisite for onchocerciasis elimination mapping (OEM). METHODS: The team employed a community knowledge approach using questionnaires and discussions, alongside the standard method of using topographical maps, to plan and implement river prospections for Simulium vector breeding sites. RESULTS: A total of 188 sites wer

A systematic review comparing the performance of alternative blackfly (Simulium) trapping methods against the standard human landing catch (HLC) for onchocerciasis surveillance.

Despite decades of control efforts, onchocerciasis remains a major public health concern in Africa, the Americas, and Yemen. Human Landing Catch (HLC) is the primary method for collecting blackflies and is central to surveillance. However, HLC raises ethical concerns due to collectors' exposure to painful and potentially infectious bites and faces operational challenges in areas of very low or high transmission. Consequently, several alternative blackfly trapping methods have been investigated, but no comprehensive synthesis comparing their effectiveness against standard HLC across studies has

Prospects for developing efficient targets for the xenomonitoring and control of Simulium damnosum s.l., the major vectors of onchocerciasis in Africa.

Despite the ethical issues concerning the continued use of Human Landing Catches (HLC) to monitor the Simulium damnosum complex for epidemiological monitoring of onchocericasis, few attempts to develop alternatives have been reported. In studies on a wild population of S. damnosum in Burkina Faso, we tested visual targets (different sizes and shapes) and olfactory stimuli (CO2 , and POCA and BG-lure® odour blends) for their ability to attract and collect host seeking blackflies. At each trap, blackflies were caught with appropriately sized electrocuting grids and results from Latin square desi

Evaluation of Community-Directed Operation of Black Fly Traps for Entomological Surveillance of Onchocerca volvulus Transmission in the Madi-Mid North Focus of Onchocerciasis in Northern Uganda.

Entomological measures of transmission are important metrics specified by the World Health Organization to document the suppression and interruption of transmission of Onchocerca volvulus, the causative agent of onchocerciasis. These metrics require testing of large numbers of vector black flies. Black fly collection has relied on human landing collections, which are inefficient and potentially hazardous. As the focus of the international community has shifted from onchocerciasis control to elimination, replacement of human landing collections has become a priority. The Esperanza window trap (

Onchocerciasis in Yemen: Time to take action against a neglected tropical parasitic disease.

Onchocerciasis is a neglected parasitic disease affecting the poorest underserved people in Yemen. A national control programme with goals to eliminate onchocerciasis has yet to be launched due to the current upheaval and social unrest in the country. The disease, locally termed as sowda, is unique in its clinicopathologic pattern, being of the localized, non-blinding, hyperreactive onchocercal skin disease. Although early reports identified endemic foci along seasonal watercourses, there is a need to redefine its epidemiologic patterns as well as health and socioeconomic impacts. Laboratory d

Evaluation of a community-based trapping program to collect Simulium ochraceum sensu lato for verification of onchocerciasis elimination.

BACKGROUND: Collection of the black fly vectors of onchocerciasis worldwide relies upon human landing collections. Recent studies have suggested that the Esperanza Window Trap baited with a human scent lure and CO2 had the potential to replace human hosts for the collection of Simulium ochraceum sensu lato in Southern Chiapas focus, Mexico. The feasibility of utilizing these traps in a community-based approach for the collection of S. ochraceum s.l. was evaluated. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Local residents of a formerly endemic extra-sentinel community for onchocerciasis were trained to

An insight into the sialome of Simulium guianense (DIPTERA:SIMulIIDAE), the main vector of River Blindness Disease in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the composition and function of the saliva in black flies such as Simulium guianense, the main vector of river blindness disease in Brazil. The complex salivary potion of hematophagous arthropods counteracts their host's hemostasis, inflammation, and immunity. RESULTS: Transcriptome analysis revealed ubiquitous salivary protein families--such as the Antigen-5, Yellow, Kunitz domain, and serine proteases--in the S. guianense sialotranscriptome. Insect-specific families were also found. About 63.4% of all secreted products revealed protein families found only i
