A culturally sensitive approach to therapy with immigrant families: the case of Jewish emigrants from the former Soviet Union.

This article is based on accumulated clinical experience in Israel with families that emigrated from the former Soviet Union. It describes a culturally sensitive systemic intervention with two such families: a single-parent family, and a family that exhibited physical violence. Relevant cultural characteristics of family patterns and parent-child relationships in Jewish-Soviet families are reviewed. It is demonstrated how a cross-cultural perspective may affect the interpretation of presented problems and result in a less pathological perspective. It is further illustrated how universal interv

Positive parent-child interactions moderate certain maltreatment effects on psychosocial well-being in 6-year-old children.

BACKGROUND: Positive parental interactions may buffer maltreated children from poor psychosocial outcomes. The study aims to evaluate the associations between various types of maltreatment and psychosocial outcomes in early childhood, and examine the moderating effect of positive parent-child interactions on them. METHODS: Data were from a representative Chinese 6-year-old children sample (n = 17,088). Caregivers reported the history of child maltreatment perpetrated by any individuals, completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire as a proxy for psychosocial well-being, and reported

Psychosocial adjustment among children conceived via donor insemination by lesbian and heterosexual mothers.

This study examined the relations among family structure (e.g., number of parents, parental sexual orientation), family process (e.g., parents' relationship satisfaction, interparental conflict), and the psychological adjustment of children who had been conceived via donor insemination. The 80 participating families, all of whom had conceived children using the resources of a single sperm bank, included 55 families headed by lesbian and 25 families headed by heterosexual parents. Fifty families were headed by couples and 30 by single parents. Participating children averaged 7 years of age. Res

Prevalence and socio-economic correlates of smoking among lone mothers in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To report smoking prevalence among Australian lone mothers by age and socio-economic group and to examine the extent to which the difference in smoking prevalence between lone mothers and other women is due to socio-economic factors. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data from the 1995 National Health Survey (NHS), which was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Information was collected from 53,800 respondents using face-to-face interviews. This analysis was limited to single mothers (n=1,184) who had at least one dependent child aged under 15. The outcom

Pediatric RISE: Development of a Poverty-Targeted Cash Support Intervention for Pediatric Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Poverty is independently associated with relapse and death in childhood cancer despite highly standardized treatment. Prior data show that direct cash support interventions are feasible and improve child outcomes; however, no such interventions exist within pediatric oncology. To address this, we aimed to pilot and refine Pediatric RISE (Resource Intervention to Support Equity), a novel, direct cash support intervention in pediatric oncology. PROCEDURE: This was a single-arm pilot study among low-income children with cancer at a single center. Participants received twice-monthly c

Parenting Concerns and Emotional Distress in Cancer Patients With Minor Children: A Meta-Analysis of Key Moderators.

BACKGROUND: Parenting concerns, stemming from cancer's projected impact on children, are a common and significant source of emotional distress for parents. A quantitative synthesis of existing data is critically absent, and the role of modulating factors (e.g., male sex, single parenthood, and the number of children) remains unclear. AIMS: This meta-analysis aims to quantify the association between parenting concerns and emotional distress in cancer patients, examining male sex, single parenthood, and number of children as key moderators. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis fol

Hepatic structure-pharmacokinetic relationships: the hepatic disposition and metabolite kinetics of a homologous series of O-acyl derivatives of salicylic acid.

1. The hepatic disposition and metabolite kinetics of a homologous series of O-acyl (acetyl, propionyl, butanoyl, pentanoyl, hexanoyl and octanoyl) esters of salicylic acid (C2SA, C3SA, C4SA, C5SA, C6SA and C8SA, respectively) was determined using a single-pass, in-situ rat liver preparation. 2. The hepatic venous outflow profiles for the parent esters and the generated metabolite, salicylic acid (SA) were analysed by HPLC. Non-parametric moments analysis was used to determine the area under the curve (AUC'), mean transit time (MTT) and normalized variance (CV2) for the parent esters and gener

Correlates of parental differential treatment: parental and contextual factors during middle childhood.

The current study examined whether parental and contextual risk factors contribute to mothers' and fathers' differential treatment (MDT/FDT) when accounting for sibling dyad characteristics. Also explored was whether family type (single mothers vs. 2 parents) moderated the links between the parental and contextual correlates and MDT. One hundred and seventy-two families with older (M= 7.4 years) and younger (M= 5.2 years) siblings were studied. Parents and children reported about the parent-child relationship, and parents reported about the children's characteristics, their own psychological r

Exploration of gene-environment interactions, maternal effects and parent of origin effects in the etiology of hypospadias.

PURPOSE: Hypospadias is a common congenital malformation of the male external genitalia. Association studies for single nucleotide polymorphisms in genes encoding steroid 5alpha-reductase, estrogen receptors 1 and 2, and activating transcription factor 3 have been equivocal. We examined whether nonreplication of findings for 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms in these genes could be due to interaction with environmental exposures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We genotyped 712 Dutch hypospadias case-parent triads for the 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms, used questionnaire information to determine e

Family developmental risk factors among adolescents with disabilities and children of parents with disabilities.

This paper investigates how the learning environments and family dynamics differ if households have a child with a disability or a parent with a disability. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, results indicate that children with disabilities experience similar learning environments as other children, but have somewhat weaker relationships with their parents. In two-parent families, maternal disability lowers parents' school involvement and is associated with a less enriching home environment. Paternal disability reduces maternal monitoring and positive family activi

Evidence of gene-environment interaction for the RUNX2 gene and environmental tobacco smoke in controlling the risk of cleft lip with/without cleft palate.

This study examined the association between 49 markers in the Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) gene and nonsyndromic cleft lip with/without cleft palate (CL/P) among 326 Chinese case-parent trios, while considering gene-environment (GxE) interaction and parent-of-origin effects. Five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showed significant evidence of linkage and association with CL/P and these results were replicated in an independent European sample of 825 case-parent trios. We also report compelling evidence for interaction between markers in RUNX2 and environmental tobacco smok

The Effect of Socioeconomic Status and Parental Demographics on Activation of Department of Child and Family Services in Pediatric Burn Injury.

Burns resulting from child maltreatment are tragic causes of significant morbidity and mortality, most commonly affecting children under 3 years of age. More than one third of nonaccidental burns occur in single-parent homes or have parents with history of mental illness, substance abuse, incarceration, or Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) involvement. The authors sought to profile pediatric burn injuries associated with DCFS investigations. They performed a retrospective chart review of pediatric burn patients, admitted between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2014. They analy

Family structure and substance use problems in adolescence and early adulthood: examining explanations for the relationship.

AIMS: Our study has two goals: to evaluate variation in symptoms of substance abuse/dependence by family structure and to examine several potential explanations for this association, including differences in socio-economic status, social support, social stress and perceived approval and use of substances by family and friends. DESIGN: Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression is used to examine the association between family type and problematic substance use and to assess the hypothesized mediators. SETTING: Data were collected between 1998 and 2000 as part of a study of the prevalence and so

The Carceral State, Social Disorganization, and Firearm Homicides in Chicago.

IMPORTANCE: Black and other racially minoritized groups are overrepresented among those who experience firearm homicide. There has been a stark increase in incarcerated populations in the US since the 1980s, largely due to differential drug sentencing, of which racially minoritized individuals are also overrepresented; social disorganization theory postulates that community and family instability resulting from incarceration can further worsen crime. OBJECTIVE: To understand the association of race-specific incarceration with race-specific firearm violence rates in Chicago, Illinois, through

Bilateral advancement flaps in the treatment of divided nevus of the eyelid: A retrospective case series.

Divided eyelid nevus can affect facial appearance and is difficult to reconstruct after excision. We conducted a retrospective case series (N = 11) and reported the study according to the STROBE guidelines. Eleven patients aged 1-10 years with congenital divided eyelid nevi underwent single-stage excision followed by bilateral advancement flaps and canthal anchoring. Outcomes were evaluated using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) and parent/guardian satisfaction scores. The median VSS score was 1 (interquartile range, 1.5). The mean parent/guardian satisfaction score was 2.45/3, and more than hal

Familial resemblance for cognitive abilities in families with P-type dyslexic, L-type dyslexic, or normal reading boys.

P-type dyslexic, L-type dyslexic, and normal reading boys, and their parents were administered a number of cognitive tasks. The P- and L-type dyslexic boys showed impaired performances on tasks representing a verbal/memory dimension. In addition, L-type dyslexics performed worse on a figure-rotation task, a result that supported the notion of a visuospatial deficit in this type of reading disturbance. The parents of P- and L-type dyslexics exhibited lowered performances on verbal/memory tasks, but they showed no evidence of impaired visuospatial functioning. Indices of familial resemblance rev

In vivo passage of Salmonella Typhimurium results in minor mutations in the bacterial genome and increases in vitro invasiveness.

Eggs and raw or undercooked egg-containing food items are frequently identified as the bacterial source during epidemiolocal investigation of Salmonella outbreaks. Multi-locus variable number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) is a widely used Salmonella typing method enabling the study of diversity within populations of the same serotype. In vivo passage, however, has been linked with changes in MLVA type and more broadly the Salmonella genome. We sought to investigate whether in vivo passage through layer hens had an effect on MLVA type as well as the bacterial genome and whether any mutation
