BACKGROUND: A spinal saddle block can be a safe method for anorectal surgery with a low rate of complications when performed with the right technique. A dreaded complication is the post-dural puncture headache (PDPH), which can be decreased by the use of non-cutting spinal needles. Regrettably, cutting Quincke (Q)-type needles are still widely used for economic reasons. Besides size and design of a spinal needle, the pre-operative time in upright sitting position may also influence the incidence of PDPH after spinal saddle block.
METHODS: Within 4 months, 363 patients undergoing anorectal sur

BACKGROUND: Type of anesthesia used for cesarean section can be general, spinal, or epidural. However, peripheral nerve blocks, such as the lower and upper extremity nerve blocks, can be referred to as other types of anesthesia. Spinal anesthesia is the most frequently used method because of its ease, dependability, and rapidity in attaining proper anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of spinal anesthesia induction position on maternal hemodynamics and the timing of hypotension.
METHOD: A prospective observational cohort study design was employed. A simple random

BACKGROUND: Hypotension is one of the most common complications of spinal anesthesia in parturients undergoing cesarean section. In this regard, the patient's position may affect the incidence of hypotension.
OBJECTIVES: In this clinical trial, we evaluated the effects of 1- and 2-minute sitting positions versus immediately lying down after spinal anesthesia on hypotension and vasopressor requirements.
METHODS: A total of 72 parturients, scheduled for cesarean section under spinal anesthesia, were randomly divided into 3 groups (24 subjects per group). Groups S1 and S2 remained in a sitting

UNLABELLED: Combined spinal-epidural anesthesia (CSE) is a popular technique for cesarean delivery. Regional blocks in obstetrics are often performed with the parturient in the sitting position because the midline may be recognized more easily than in the lateral decubitus position. When conventional spinal anesthesia is performed in the sitting position, the patient is placed supine immediately after drug injection. In contrast, when CSE is performed with the woman sitting, there is a delay in assuming the supine position because of epidural catheter placement, which may affect the incidence

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of patient position on the magnitude of the coronal Cobb angle measurements in relation to the change of position using plain radiograph on non-ambulatory children with myelodysplasia. Whole-spine radiographs with the patient sitting generally are preferred for the diagnosis and monitoring of progression of scoliosis in neuromuscular patients. Supine, supine traction, and sitting push-up positions have been used as substitutes, although there is no general consensus validating if these positions correlate with the sitting position.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the risk of severe blood loss is increased in semi-sitting and sitting position, and if so, to which extent blood loss from perineal damage is responsible for this finding.
DESIGN: Secondary analysis of data from a large trial.
SETTING: Primary care midwifery practices in the Netherlands.
POPULATION: About 1646 low-risk women who had a spontaneous vaginal delivery.
METHODS: Blood loss was measured using a weighing scale and measuring jug. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the net effects of birthing position and perineal damage on blood loss grea

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of lumbar lordosis assistive support (LLAS) on craniovertebral angle (CVA) and mechanical properties of the upper trapezius (UT) muscle in subjects with forward head posture (FHP). [Subjects and Methods] This study recruited 20 subjects with FHP. CVA and muscle tone, viscoelasticity, and stiffness of the UT were measured using Myoton in all subjects in a sitting position with LLAS and in a neutral sitting position. The order of measurements was randomized and the mean values were calculated twice. [Results] The sitting position with

BACKGROUND: Several previous studies reported on the impact of upright standing and chair sitting on the sagittal spinopelvic alignment. However, there are no studies on the impact of the two Asian (Korean and Japanese) style floor-sitting positions on the sagittal spinopelvic alignment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of four different body postures (standing, chair sitting, kneel sitting, and cross-legged sitting) on the sagittal spinopelvic alignment.
METHODS: Sixteen selected healthy volunteers (10 males and six females) were subjects of this pilot study. In all subje

BACKGROUND: Sitting radiographs have been used as a pre-operative tool to plan patient-specific total hip arthroplasty (THA) component position that would improve hip stability. Previous work has demonstrated that spinal mobility may impact functional acetabular position when seated. We sought to determine whether patients who dislocate following THA have different sitting spinopelvic alignment or acetabular component orientation compared to patients who did not dislocate.
METHODS: A consecutive series of 1000 patients underwent post-operative low-dose biplanar spine-to-ankle lateral radiogra

PURPOSE: In emergency situations, rescuers must occasionally secure the airway while the patient is in a restricted position rather than in the ideal supine position. We hypothesized that the Pentax-AWS Airway Scope (AWS) may be useful for emergent tracheal intubation in such positions.
METHODS: Thirteen non-anesthesia residents performed tracheal intubation on a simulated manikin in the supine (Supine), left-lateral decubitus (Left-LT), right-lateral decubitus (Right-LT), prone (Prone), and sitting (Sitting) position, respectively, to assess AWS performance.
RESULTS: Intubations were succes

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to measure the possible differences in shrinkage of the thoracolumbar spine in subjects working in a sitting and a standing posture for 6.5 h at work, in a realistic work environment. The isolated shrinkage of the thoracic and the lumbar spine was also examined. STUDY DESIGN: This study presents a new protocol to measure shrinkage of the thoracic and lumbar spine separately. BACKGROUND: Controversies still exist with regard to the load on the spine in a sitting compared to a standing position. Some report that shrinkage is greatest in the sitting position while oth
