Near-optimal Integration of Magnitude in the Human Parietal Cortex.

Humans are often observed to make optimal sensorimotor decisions but to be poor judges of situations involving explicit estimation of magnitudes or numerical quantities. For example, when drawing conclusions from data, humans tend to neglect the size of the sample from which it was collected. Here, we asked whether this sample size neglect is a general property of human decisions and investigated its neural implementation. Participants viewed eight discrete visual arrays (samples) depicting variable numbers of blue and pink balls. They then judged whether the samples were being drawn from an u

Online repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the parietal operculum disrupts haptic memory for grasping.

The parietal operculum (OP) contains haptic memory on the geometry of objects that is readily transferrable to the motor cortex but a causal role of OP in memory-guided grasping is only speculative. We explored this issue by using online high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). The experimental task was performed by blindfolded participants acting on objects of variable size. Trials consisted in three phases: haptic exploration of an object, delay, and reach-grasp movement onto the explored object. Motor performance was evaluated by the kinematics of finger aperture.

Grasping without vision: time normalizing grip aperture profiles yields spurious grip scaling to target size.

The analysis of normalized movement trajectories is a popular and informative technique used in investigations of visuomotor control during goal-directed acts like reaching and grasping. This technique typically involves standardizing measures against the amplitude of some other variable - most typically time. Here, we show that this normalizing technique can lead to some surprising results. In the first of two experiments, we asked participants to grasp target objects without ever seeing them from trial to trial. In the second experiment, participants were given a brief preview of the target

Visual, kinaesthetic and cross-modal judgements of length by normal and clumsy children.

The ability of normal and clumsy children to match the length of lines within and between the modalities of vision and kinesthesis was studied. The clumsy children showed perceptual impairments, as indicated by their poor performance on the visual, kinaesthetic and cross-modal judgements of length and also by their low scores on spatial subtests of the WISC. Variations in motor skill correlated with performance on the visual perceptual measures, but not with performance on the kinaesthetic or cross-modal tasks. The idea that clumsiness may be caused by an impairment of visual perception is dis

Preserved visual imagery in visual form agnosia.

We investigated the ability of a patient (D.F.) with profound visual form agnosia to perform a variety of tasks requiring visual imagery. Despite her inability to discriminate between objects and patterns of different shapes, sizes, and orientations, D.F. showed quite normal visual imagery involving these same 'visual' properties when the images were drawn from long-term memory. Thus, she was able both to scan mental images in search of particular features and to form new images by combining several known images. While there is growing evidence that perception and imagery share common neural s

Social cognition in Korsakoff's syndrome: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Korsakoff's syndrome is an alcohol-related neurocognitive disorder characterized by episodic memory impairments, apathy, confabulations and poor illness-insight. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate mean effect sizes of performance in social cognition in people with Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) compared with controls. METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted in May 2024 to identify research articles that examined social cognition in patients with KS and control groups. Weighted effect sizes (Hedges' g) were calculated for the three levels of social cognition: emo

Observing ageism implicitly using the numerical parity judgment task.

Objective magnitude representations may be prone to subjective percepts when judging human beings. An elderly man is clearly "large" in terms of age. But, is he truly perceived as "big" in our minds? We investigated whether "objective" representation of age interacts with subjective stereotypical percepts of aging, using a numeral classification task preceded by prime images containing human figures. First, prime images of children and young adults demonstrated a positive correlation between perceived age and numerical size. Second, negatively and positively valenced prime images were associat

A Novel Mobile Tool (Somatomap) to Assess Body Image Perception Pilot Tested With Fashion Models and Nonmodels: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Distorted perception of one's body and appearance, in general, is a core feature of several psychiatric disorders including anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder and is operative to varying degrees in nonclinical populations. Yet, body image perception is challenging to assess, given its subjective nature and variety of manifestations. The currently available methods have several limitations including restricted ability to assess perceptions of specific body areas. To address these limitations, we created Somatomap, a mobile tool that enables individuals to visually represe

Iranian mothers' perceptions of key nursing safety practices during first chemotherapy treatment of children with leukaemia: a longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding maternal perceptions of the quality and safety of care serves as a crucial management tool for the planning and enhancement of health interventions. In Iran, where cultural norms emphasise mothers' central role in caregiving and healthcare resources are often limited, incorporating their perspectives into nursing care strategies is essential. This study aimed to assess the perception of key nursing safety practices among Iranian mothers of children with leukaemia undergoing their first chemotherapy course. DESIGN: A longitudinal study. SETTING: Oncology wards of hos

The role of body image and self-perception in anorexia nervosa: the neuroimaging perspective.

Anorexia nervosa is a severe psychiatric illness characterized by intense fear of gaining weight, relentless pursuit of thinness, deep concerns about food and a pervasive disturbance of body image. Functional magnetic resonance imaging tries to shed light on the neurobiological underpinnings of anorexia nervosa. This review aims to evaluate the empirical neuroimaging literature about self-perception in anorexia nervosa. This narrative review summarizes a number of task-based and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging studies in anorexia nervosa about body image and self-perception

Illness perception and fibromyalgia impact on female patients from Spain and the Netherlands: do cultural differences exist?

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in illness perception and overall impact on fibromyalgia females from Spain and the Netherlands. A total of 325 fibromyalgia females from Spain (54.3 ± 7.1 years) and the Netherlands (51.8 ± 7.2 years) participated in the study. Illness perception and impact of fibromyalgia were assessed by the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire and the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, respectively. Spanish fibromyalgia females perceived more symptoms related to their fibromyalgia (identity) such as nausea, breathlessness, wheezing or fatigue (P

A new classification of cochleovestibular malformations and implications for predicting speech perception ability after cochlear implantation.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to introduce a new classification of cochleovestibular malformation (CVM) and to investigate how well this classification can predict speech perception ability after cochlear implantation in children with CVM. METHODS: Fifty-nine children with CVM who had used a cochlear implant for more than 3 years were included. CVM was classified into 4 subtypes based on the morphology of the cochlea and the modiolus on temporal bone computed tomography (TBCT): normal cochlea and normal modiolus (type A, n = 16), malformed cochlea and partial modiolus (type B, n = 3

Gender differences in health protective behaviours and its implications for COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan: a population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection produces more severe symptoms and a higher mortality in men than in women. The role of biological sex in the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 is believed to explain this sex disparity. However, the contribution of gender factors that influence health protective behaviors and therefore health outcomes, remains poorly explored. METHODS: We assessed the contributions of gender in attitudes towards the COVID-19 pandemic, using a hypothetical influenza pandemic data from the 2019 Taiwan Social Change Survey. Particip

Fixational eye movements as active sensation for high visual acuity.

Perception and action are inherently entangled: our world view is shaped by how we explore our environment through complex and variable self-motion. Even when fixating stable stimuli, our eyes undergo small, involuntary movements. Fixational eye movements (FEM) render a stable world jittery on our retinae, which can be expected to harm neural coding. Yet, empirical evidence suggests that FEM help rather than harm human perception of fine detail. Here, we elucidate this paradox by uncovering under which conditions FEM improve or impair retinal coding and human acuity. We combine theory and expe

Emergence of behavioral phenomena and adaptation effects in human numerosity decoder using recurrent neural networks.

Humans possess an innate ability to visually perceive numerosities, which refers to the cardinality of a set. Numerous studies indicate that the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP) and other intraparietal sulcus (IPS) regions (region) of the brain contain the neurological substrates responsible for number processing. Existing computational models of number perception often focus on a limited range of numbers and fail to account for important behavioral characteristics like adaptation effects, despite simulating fundamental aspects such as size and distance effects. To address these limitations,

Factors influencing motorcycle crash risk and accident prediction ability: The role of hazard perception training in Thailand.

Road traffic crashes remain a critical public issue in Thailand, particularly among motorcycle riders. In-depth accident investigations have identified perceptual failure, specifically the lack of hazard perception skills, as a key contributing factor in motorcycle-related crashes. Despite various road safety measures, empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of hazard perception training for motorcyclists remains limited. This study aimed to examine the factors associated with motorcycle crash and near-miss involvement among riders in Thailand, evaluate the effectiveness of a newly deve

Size-contrast illusions deceive the eye but not the hand.

BACKGROUND: When we reach out to pick up an object, not only do we direct our moving limb towards the location of the object, but the opening between our fingers and thumb is scaled in flight to the object's size. Evidence obtained from patients with neurological disorders has shown that the visual processing underlying the calibration of grip aperture and other movement parameters during grasping is mediated by visual mechanisms located in the cerebral cortex that are quite distinct from those underlying the experiential perception of object size and other object features. Under appropriate c

Look Fear in the Eyes: The Influence of Emotion Regulation on Spider Size Estimation-A Pupillometry Study.

The link between perceptual biases and fear has been extensively documented in recent years. For example, the size of spiders is overestimated among people with a high fear of them. While emotion regulation processes are known to reduce fear, it is yet unknown whether emotion regulation can also reduce fear-related perceptual biases. This study examined the behavioral and physiological influence of cognitive reappraisal, an adaptive emotion regulation strategy, on spider size estimation among women with a high fear of spiders. Forty women with a high fear of spiders completed a trial-by-trial

Examining College Student Perceptions of Criminal Justice Outcomes Among Persons With Mental Illness.

An extensive body of literature has documented punitive responses to mental illness in the United States that have coalesced around arrest and incarceration. Similarly, studies have highlighted the lack of treatment options available to persons with mental illness, as well as the fact the persons with mental illness are particularly susceptible to offering false confessions. Research on perceptions of these realities is, however, comparatively limited. This study contributes to the literature through the use of survey methodology to examine the perceptions of college students at a mid-sized un
