Description Inverse psoriasis is a clinical variant of psoriasis involving flexural or intertriginous areas of the body. Inverse psoriasis may be present in 3 to 36% of psoriasis patients. Lesions are clinically characterized as smooth, well-demarcated, erythematous plaques (raised, >1 cm) without the typical silvery scales of classic psoriasis. Differential diagnosis includes tinea infection, candidiasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or bacterial streptococcal infection. The clinical images in this review focus on identifying inverse psoriasis along the full spectrum of skin tones.

BACKGROUND: The melanin fluorescence of skin lesions is measurable with two-photon excitation, a process termed dermatofluoroscopy, which has shown a shift from the green spectra in benign melanocytic lesions to the red spectra in melanoma. This study addressed the question as to which kind of pigmented lesions can be correctly diagnosed as melanin-bearing malignant tumors.
METHODS: 476 pigmented lesions including 101 cutaneous melanomas were analyzed with dermatofluoroscopy, measuring the melanin fluorescence in a grid-like fashion with a separation of measurement points of 0.2 mm. The resul

BACKGROUND: Organotypic tissue-cultured skin equivalents are used for a broad range of applications either as possible substitute for animal tests or for transplantation in patient-centered care.
AIMS: In this study, we implemented melanocytes in a tissue-cultured full-thickness skin equivalent, consisting of epidermis and dermis. The versatility of this skin-like model with respect to pigmentation and morphological criteria was tested.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pigmented skin equivalents were morphologically characterized, and melanogenesis was evaluated after treatment with kojic acid - a tyr

BACKGROUND: Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of genetic disorders characterized by diminished pigmentation of the skin, hair and eyes. Individuals with OCA are at increased risk to develop sun-induced skin malignancies. The incidence of malignant melanoma in OCA individuals is, however, very low. The aim of this study was to document pigmented and melanocytic skin lesions occurring in patients with OCA.
METHODS: A prospective study was performed. Sixteen patients with OCA presenting at the Oncology and Dermatology Departments at Universitas Academic Hospital Annex in Bloemfontein, Sou

BACKGROUND: Modern tattoo colourants frequently consist of azo pigments that not only contain multiple impurities but also are originally produced for car paint and the dyeing of consumer goods.
OBJECTIVE: In order to be able to assess the health risk of tattoos, it is important to determine the pigment concentration in human skin.
METHODS: We tattooed excised pigskin and human skin with a common tattoo pigment (Pigment Red 22) under various conditions. After tattooing, we quantitatively extracted the pigment in order to determine the pigment concentration in skin.
RESULTS: The concentratio

The rising prevalence of vision-threatening eye diseases poses a major global health and economic burden, yet timely diagnosis remains limited by workforce shortages, diagnostic delays, and restricted access to specialized care. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers potential solutions. In particular, recent progress in foundation models and large language models-especially multimodal large language models (MLLMs)-has shown promise in medical image interpretation and automated clinical documentation. However, advancing MLLMs for ophthalmology is hindered by the lack of unified, comprehensive ben

Description Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common benign disorder involving hyperkeratosis of the skin. It is associated with other common dry skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris. Lesions are clinically characterized as symmetrically distributed, monomorphic, folliculocentric, hyperkeratotic papules with a variable degree of perifollicular erythema. The appearance can be likened to spikey bumps that are commonly located on the arms, legs, and buttocks. Awareness of KP is important as every primary care clinician will see patients with this disorder. Identification can

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by recurrent deep-seated nodules and painful abscesses with scars, fistulae, and sinus tracts that predominately affect the intertriginous sites. Onset typically occurs soon after puberty. Depending on disease severity, HS can lead to varying levels of pain, disability, and disfiguration with significant impacts on quality of life. Hidradenitis suppurativa is diagnosed clinically, and no diagnostic tests are specific to the disease. Therefore, clinicians must have the knowledge and competence to identify the cl

BACKGROUND: Some pulse oximeters perform worse in people with darker skin, and this may be due to inadequate diversity of skin pigment in device development study cohorts. Guidance is needed to accurately and equitably characterize skin pigment to ensure diversity in research cohorts. We tested multiple methods for characterizing skin pigment to assess comparability and impact on cohort diversity.
OBJECTIVES: Assess reliability and comparability of common skin pigment measurement methodsCompare findings from different anatomical sitesDemonstrate that pigment cannot be assumed from US National

Description Cutaneous abscesses are collections of pus resulting from skin and soft tissue bacterial infections. They clinically exhibit the four cardinal inflammatory signs of pain, warmth, swelling, and erythema. In patients with darkly pigmented skin, classically-associated erythema may be challenging to appreciate and can lead to missed or delayed diagnosis. We compare abscess presentations in different skin types. Recognition of varying presentations of cutaneous abscesses in diverse skin colors will help clinicians utilize additional clues to identify and diagnose this entity correctly.

Description Recent studies estimate that more than 8 million Americans have psoriasis. The prevalence of psoriasis in African Americans is 1.5% compared to 3.6% of Caucasians. Psoriasis is likely to be underdiagnosed among African Americans and other individuals with darker pigmented skin due to variations in clinical presentation in addition to disease distribution and severity. We present images of psoriasis vulgaris in a variety of Fitzpatrick skin types. Differences in the biology of skin pigmentation may explain the clinical masking of erythema in darker-skinned individuals. Recognition o

HIV and AIDS patients often suffer from various skin infections of viral, bacterial, and fungal origin. In addition, parasitic infestations are prevalent. Common inflammatory dermatoses include seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, photodermatitis, and pruritic papular eruptions. This article discusses some of these conditions with an emphasis on clinical presentation. In patients with pigmented skin, diagnosis maybe challenging and complicated by dyspigmentation.

The incidence of melanoma is on the rise, and early detection of disease is imperative to reduce mortality. Dermatologists are key players in the early detection of melanoma; however, some clinicians rely on their clinical examination without any additional diagnostic tools to make this important diagnosis. Certain patients, such as atypical nevus patients, have more complicated mole examinations, making the diagnosis of melanoma difficult, whereas some melanomas, such as amelanotic melanomas, can be diagnostically challenging. The goal of the clinician is to detect melanoma with the highest a

Spontaneous regression in melanomas is not an uncommon phenomenon, as it has been described in 10-35% of primary cutaneous lesions [1]. Regression does not appear to predict a more favorable course, since even fully regressed melanomas may progress into metastatic disease [2]. Several dermoscopic features have been correlated with the regression process, including white scar-like depigmented areas and gray-blue, pepper-like granules, which correspond to dermal scarring, pigment incontinence and presence of melanophages [3,4]. Regression may occur not only in melanomas, but also in melanocytic
