OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiological features of child and adolescent (≤18 years old) patients managed for traumatic skull fractures (TSKFs) and associated traumatic brain injury (TBI).
DESIGN: 393 Patients who were children and adolescent who had TSKFs admitted to our university affiliated hospitals between January 2003 and December 2010. The incidence and patterns were summarized with respect to different age group, admission time and etiology.
SETTING: Two university-affiliated hospitals from January 2003 to May 2010.
RESULTS: The most common etiologies were motor vehicle collis

BACKGROUND: Basilar skull fractures predispose patients to meningitis because of the possible direct contact of bacteria in the paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx or middle ear with the central nervous system (CNS). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage has been associated with a greater risk of contracting meningitis. Antibiotics are often given prophylactically, although their role in preventing bacterial meningitis has not been established.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of prophylactic antibiotics for preventing meningitis in patients with basilar skull fractures.

The literature pertaining to pediatric skull fracture is primarily clinically based and thus motivated by the need for effective assessment of both fracture characteristics (type, frequency, location, and mechanics) and context (severity of injury, associated soft tissue damage, and prognosis). From a strictly descriptive standpoint, these schemas employ overlapping levels of detail that confound the nonclinical description of fractures in the forensic context. For this reason, application of these schemas in the forensic anthropological interpretation of skull fractures is inappropriate. We a

OBJECTIVE: Frontal comminuted depressed skull fractures need special attention due to complications and aesthetics. The optimal method of reconstruction and fixation of frontal bone fragments remains a matter of discussion. We explored the advantages of reconstruction of frontal bone with titanium clamps.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From May 2007 to September 2011, we performed 18 craniotomies with titanium clamps to fix the cranial fragments. On the beginning of craniotomy, single-window craniotomy (n = 11) and 2-window craniotomy (n = 9) were designed. After dural closure and frontobasal reconstr

Growing skull fractures (GSFs) are rare complications after severe head injuries in the early childhood and rarely occur after craniosynostosis repair. The aim of this study was to define an algorithm for sufficient treatment for GSF after craniofacial procedures. Literature research was performed to clarify risk factors for GSFs after cranial vault reshaping. Conclusions of the literature and experiences of the authors based on a case of GSF after craniofacial surgery were matched to establish guidelines for successful therapy.

Elevated fractures of the skull, which are rarely reported in the literature, are always compound, have maximal neurological deficits at presentation and have been reported only in adults. We report two cases of elevated skull fractures in the pediatric age group, one of which was a simple elevated fracture and presented with delayed neurological deterioration. The etiologies were a fall in first case and an animal attack (bear maul) in the second case as reported for the first time. One of the cases presented with delayed onset of left focal hemispheric signs. The first case underwent debride

The authors report their experience in the treatment of middle skull base fractures with TMJ involvement of ten patients affected by fractures of the glenoid cavity and of the petrous part of the temporal bone, with TMJ disfunction and facial nerve palsy. The treatment has been based on functional rest, a liquid diet for 5 days and than a functional physiotherapy aimed at rehabilitation of the TMJ. The efficacy of treatment has been showed after 2 months by restoring the dental occlusion and the TMJ's function in nine out of ten cases. Three out of four patients (75%) at the same control showe

We studied 22 cervical spines from traffic accident victims with fatal craniocerebral injuries (19 male victims and three female victims; mean age, 26 years). Two had parietal fractures, 20 had skull base fractures (seven ring fractures), and 16 had severe polytrauma. The spines with all soft tissues were frozen in situ and removed. Fine-focus specimen radiograms were taken in special views and evaluated by an expert orthopedic radiologist. The specimens were then cryosectioned, and all injuries were recorded at submillimeter intervals on high resolution film. Ten radiological fracture diagnos

The management of 319 cases with nonmissible depressed skull fractures is discussed. The majority of these injuries (75%) resulted from assaults and more than 90% were compound fractures. Of these, 35 cases were excluded from the series; these were patients who died before investigation or treatment could be instituted, or whose major injury was an intracranial hematoma or extensive traumatic hemorrhagic necrosis rather than a depressed fracture with underlying localized contusion. In the remaining 284 cases a comparison is made between the outcome in 124 (44%) patients treated by a convention

The lesions of the skull following perforating traumas can create complex fractures. The blunt traumas can, according to the swiftness and the shape of the object used, create a depressed fracture. The authors describe through two clinical cases the lesional characteristic of the blunt traumas, perforating the skull using a hammer. In both cases the cranial lesions were very typical: they were geometrical, square shaped, of the same size than the tool (head and tip of the hammer). On the outer table of the skull, the edges of the wounds were sharp and regular. On the inner table, the edges of

INTRODUCTION: Growing skull fractures are a rare complication of paediatric skull fractures. Despite its rarity, a large proportion of resources go towards detecting this complication. This study aims to identify the factors associated with growing skull fracture development to determine which children require follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-centre retrospective study examining the referral data from all patients under one years old referred with head trauma between 2013 and 2023 (n = 246). Of these patients 189 sustained skull fractures, with two requiring surgery for a g

Depressed skull fractures (ping-pong) in the fetus and newborn are associated with birth canal pathology, maternal trauma and birth trauma following instrumental delivery. The authors report a newborn with a depressed skull fracture (ping-pong) who underwent minimally invasive neurosurgical lifting of bone fragment through a burr hole. Strategy and methods of treatment of similar depressed skull fractures were comprehensively discussed. Moreover, the authors proposed a brief algorithm for the use of vacuum systems and various surgical techniques, including follow-up depending on type, cause, s

INTRODUCTION: More and more teenagers indulge in sports at school or in recreational settings. Some of these sports are considered to be purveyors of accidents and should be practiced by putting in place safety rules and regulations. This report is unusual case of a school child of age 13 who suffered from depressed skull fracture due to accidental fall of a mass of 3kg during an athletics meeting.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: He was a 13-year-old boy who accidentally received on his head a throwing mass of 3kg thrown by a young athlete at a school athletics meeting. He became unconsciousness for a

Accidental head injury in infants is relatively common in the emergency department. However, abusive head trauma (AHT) should be considered in the differential diagnosis because of its strong association with morbidity and mortality. A 4-month-old male infant was admitted to the emergency department by his parents because of bilateral scalp swelling. Skull radiography and head computed tomography with three-dimensional reconstruction revealed bilateral linear parietal skull fractures. Although bilateral skull fractures are more commonly associated with AHT than single linear skull fractures, t

BACKGROUND: The popularity of electric bicycles (E-bikes) in The Netherlands has surged in recent years. Simultaneously, bicycle-related traffic injuries in The Netherlands have reached record levels. Given the significant societal and individual impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI) we investigated the relationship between E-bike usage and the occurrence of severe TBI.
METHODS: All bicycle crash victims aged twelve years and older admitted to the Isala Hospital from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2022, were included from the National Trauma Registry. Data on bicycle type, anticoagulants, alc
