Sleep is essential for animal health and welfare. In humans, postsurgical sleep disturbances can delay postoperative recovery. However, objective sleep evaluation in dogs and studies of postoperative sleep disturbances in animals have not been reported. This study aimed to determine whether activity monitors (PLUS CYCLE®; JARMeC, Kanagawa, Japan) can accurately monitor the condition of hospitalized dogs and postoperative sleep disturbances. First, the activity data collected by PLUS CYCLE® were compared with the observation data in a video of hospitalized dogs (n = 9). We determined the correl

The nature of the relationship between sleep problems and dementia remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between sleep measures and dementia in older adults (≥ 65) using data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) and further investigated the causal association in Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. In total of 7,223 individuals, 5.7 % developed dementia (1.7 % Alzheimer's disease (AD)) within an average of 8 (± 2.9) years. Cox regression models and MR were employed. Long sleep duration (>8 h) was associated with 64 % increased risk of incident dementia and

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), sleep fragmentation, and short sleep duration (SD) have been associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, these potential mechanisms for CKD have not been compared in the same cohort. This study investigated the independent and combined impact of OSA and insomnia with short sleep duration on the risk of CKD progression in a sleep clinic population.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study design, adults with suspected OSA completed an overnight sleep study and a questionnaire that included the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and Pittsburgh S

Long sleep duration, defined as ≥9 h, is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. We sought to determine the effect of sleep extension on peripheral vascular health. Twelve middle-aged adults were randomly assigned to spend five nights with 8 h (control) or 10+ hours time in bed (TIB) in a crossover fashion. Sleep was assessed using wrist actigraphy. Peak reactive hyperemia in the forearm was measured using venous-occlusion plethysmography as an index of microvascular vasodilation. Nighttime and morning blood pressure was recorded along with pulse wave velocity (arterial stiffness).

BACKGROUND: Supine sleeping position and obesity are well-known risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and modulate the risk for OSA-related daytime symptoms. Although respiratory event durations are associated with OSA-related severe health consequences, it is unclear how sleeping position, obesity, and daytime sleepiness are associated with respiratory event durations during REM and NREM sleep. We hypothesize that irrespective of the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), respiratory event durations differ significantly between various OSA subgroups during REM and NREM sleep.
METHODS: One nigh

Opioids are widely used for pain management, but their impact on sleep and respiratory function remains a concern. This study examines the association between opioid use, symptom-defined obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and sleep duration. A cross-sectional observational study utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey assessed self-reported opioid use. Multiple regression analyses and subgroup evaluations were conducted to explore potential relationships. Opioid use was categorized into short-term (<90 days) and long-term (≥90 days) use. In the general population,

OBJECTIVES: Nonrestorative sleep (NRS) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) are important indicators of daytime dysfunction. Electronic media use before bedtime greatly affects adolescent sleep quality. However, few studies have examined factors associated with these symptoms. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the impact of chronotype, electronic device use before bedtime, and insomnia symptoms on NRS and EDS in Japanese adolescents.
METHODS: A web-based cross-sectional survey of 2067 adolescents was conducted in 2022 to mainly assess sleep-related issues (sleep duration, chronotype, insom

INTRODUCTION: Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) populations face a high burden of metabolic syndrome; however, the potential associations between poor sleep and adiposity remain unexplored in these groups. To address this gap, the present systematic review evaluated the correlations between sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep disorders (specifically, obstructive sleep apnea [OSA] and insomnia) and markers of adiposity. Unlike Western cohorts, MENA populations may exhibit distinct circadian-dietary phenotypes shaped by nighttime social engagement and religiously driven sleep fragmentatio

BACKGROUND: Frailty is one of the major concerns among aging people with HIV (PWH). Evidence regarding the association between sleep disorders and physical frailty in PWH is limited.
METHODS: PWH and HIV-negative individuals aged ≥40 years were included and frequency-matched in a 1:2 ratio by sex and age. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs of the association between sleep disorders and physical frailty, and restricted cubic splines were used to describe the dose-response association. The contribution of depression to the association was estimate

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorder prevalence exhibited a six-fold relative increase from 2000 to 2010 in the United States. Sleep problems could increase the risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Objective short sleep duration is associated with increased mortality. Obesity, smoking and sex differences could influence sleep disorders and sleep duration. The health effects of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) pollution are of great concern. However, a large general population-based study with abundant demographic and lifestyle information is needed to confirm the effect of PM

BACKGROUND: Experimental and epidemiologic data suggest that among nonpregnant adults, sleep duration may be an important risk factor for chronic disease. Although pregnant women commonly report poor sleep, few studies objectively evaluated the quality of sleep in pregnancy or explored the relationship between sleep disturbances and maternal and perinatal outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine the relationship between objectively assessed sleep duration, timing, and continuity (measured via wrist actigraphy) and maternal cardiovascular and metabolic morbidity specific to pregnancy.

UNLABELLED: Accumulating evidence suggests a relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and sleep problems. A comprehensive study is needed to decipher whether shared polygenic risk variants exist between diabetic traits and sleep traits.
METHODS: We integrated summary statistics from different genome-wide association studies and investigated overlap in single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with diabetes-related traits (type 2 diabetes, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and glycated hemoglobin) and sleep traits (insomnia symptoms, sleep duration, and chronotype) using a conditi

This systematic review (PROSPERO CRD420246206360) investigated relationships between self-reported or objective sleep duration and fluid biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease pathology and neurodegeneration: cerebrospinal fluid or blood Aβ, p-tau181, t-tau, NfL and GFAP. We searched PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL from inception to September 2024. Twenty studies (n = 12,445) met inclusion criteria (13 cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers [n = 2836]; 7 blood biomarkers [n = 9609]). Study quality was assessed using Newcastle-Ottawa scales. Whereas many studies did not report any associations, some trends emerg

We aimed to examine the association between sleep duration and thirst level, indicator of altered hydration status. We performed a secondary analysis of the 2018 Korean Sleep-Headache Study, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey conducted in the Republic of Korea. Of 2,501 participants who completed the survey, 2,468 were included in the final analysis (age, 47.9 ± 16.4 years; 49.8% male). Participants were categorized into the high- or low-thirst group based on self-reported thirst frequency. Sleep duration was grouped as ≤ 6, > 6-7, > 7-8, and > 8 h. Logistic regression assessed

OBJECTIVES: Postpartum anxiety is understudied and underdiagnosed. Given associations between postpartum anxiety and adverse maternal and infant outcomes, it is crucial to identify patterns and predictors of postpartum anxiety. We examined the associations between sleep duration and timing and postpartum anxiety over 6 months following delivery.
METHODS: A convenience sample of pregnant women with a history of depression (n = 162; 30-39 weeks) completed self-report measures of sleep, anxiety, and depression in the third trimester and once/month for 6 months following delivery. Concurrent and

INTRODUCTION: Experts recommend that adults should regularly sleep at least 7 hours per night to benefit health and avoid negative outcomes. Binge drinking is the most common pattern of harmful alcohol consumption in the United States and is associated with injuries and diseases.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between sleep duration recommendations and binge drinking among Panamanian college professors and administrative workers.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 253 Panamanian professors and college administrative workers (171 women, 82 men) from four cities, a

INTRODUCTION: Poor sleep quality has been associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) activity, although studies incorporating actigraphy suggest that the perception of sleep differs rather than objective difference in sleep quality. Short sleep duration has been associated with increased pro-inflammatory cytokines that have been implicated in the pathogenesis of IBD.
METHODS: An observational study incorporated home-based polysomnography that was conducted within twelve weeks of an objective assessment of IBD activity such as calprotectin, colonoscopy, or MRI. Participants completed a s
