Fasciolosis, caused by the trematode Fasciola hepatica, is a zoonosis of economic importance in livestock that is emerging as a chronic disease in humans. The intermediate hosts are lymnaeid snails, in which diagnosis of infection is traditionally based on cercarial shedding, tissue sectioning and crushing. We developed a PCR assay for the sensitive and specific detection of F. hepatica in field-collected Lymnaea sp. snails. A primer pair was designed to amplify a 405 bp fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene of F. hepatica. The PCR assay showed a limit of detection of 10 pg of ge

Lymnaea stagnalis snails were collected from 174 individual ponds of an extensive pond system in South Germany; 43,441 snails collected during 1980 2000 were examined for shedding cercariae. The species richness (at least 18 species of cercariae) and the high cercarial prevalence (at least 44.9%) may result from the high abundance and diversity of vertebrate and invertebrate hosts in the area. The mean prevalence (% +/- SEM) of most cercarial species increased from May-June to August-October, e.g. in Diplostomum spathaceum from 4.1% to 18.6%, in all echinostomatids from 5.6% to 18.0%, in Pseud

The Moroccan Ministry of Public Health has launched a programme to eliminate schistosomiasis. One of the components in this process is the control of Bulinus truncatus, the intermediate host snail of Schistosoma haematobium. We evaluated three environmentally safe measures to control B. truncatus in siphon boxes, the main breeding sites for these snails in the Tessaout Amont irrigation system. The first method involved covering the siphon boxes to exclude light and reduce algal growth, the second consisted of increasing the frequency of emptying and cleaning the siphon boxes, and the third met

The small subunit (18S) rRNA gene sequences of the lymnaeid morphs I and II (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Basommatophora: Lymnaeidae) transmitting human fascioliasis in the high endemic zone of the northern Bolivian Altiplano and of Lymnaea cubensis from Mexico and Guadeloupe island (Caribbean) have been obtained by direct polymerase chain reaction PCR cycle sequencing and silver staining methods and compared to that of the 6 most common European Lymnaeidae species. Results allow us to establish definitively the distinction between the lymnaeids from the northern Bolivian Altiplano and L. cubensis. L

Lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme (LD5) which is associated with anaerobic respiration was inhibited to a certain degree in Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, the intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni. Urea and thiourea were used as inhibitors. The effect of LD5 inhibition on the mortality rate of infected Biomphalaria alexandrina snails and on the susceptibility of the snails to the trematode infection was also studied.

Snail-transmitted trematode parasites such as schistosomes and liver flukes assume considerable medical and veterinary significance in tropical Africa. We have observed a strong negative association between the presence of medically important pulmonate snails and the crayfish Procambarus clarkii in freshwater habitats in Kenya. This crayfish, introduced into Kenya around 1970, readily consumes these snails in the laboratory. Field enclosure experiments indicate that crayfish exert a significant negative impact on the abundance of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the intermediate host of the human blood

OBJECTIVE: To study the reasons of natural death of Oncomelania hupensis snails in marshland by comparing the differences of environmental factors between snail marshland and non-snail marshland in East Dongting Lake schistosomiasis endemic areas.
METHODS: Two adjoining marshlands were selected, one was a snail marshland and another was a non-snail marshland. The measuring points were set by grid of "20 m x 20 m". The soil moisture, elevation, soil pH and temperature of the points were measured, and the snails of the points were surveyed.
RESULTS: The elevation, soil pH and temperature of th

Phenotypic plasticity allows animals to manage environmental challenges. Studies aimed at quantifying plasticity often focus on one challenge, such as diet, and one organ system, such the gastrointestinal tract, but this approach may not adequately reflect how plasticity could buffer multiple challenges. Thus, we investigated the outcomes of a dual challenge experiment that fed land snails either a high-fibre (low quality) or a low-fibre (high quality) diet, and simultaneously exercised them daily over 1.2 m on either a smooth surface of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or a rough sandpaper. By the en

Understanding how parasite abundance changes over time is inherently challenging, as trematodes, nematodes and cestodes degrade quickly and are poorly preserved. Here, I propose a novel approach for investigating the spatiotemporal dynamics of parasitic nematode infection by exploiting a key component of the snail immune system - the ability to trap and encapsulate these parasites within their shell. By utilising museum and modern collections, I was able to understand how nematode populations fluctuated in two species of snails (Cepaea nemoralis and C. hortensis) from three locations (Point of

This review highlights recent advances and ongoing challenges in the genomics, genetics, and gene-editing (3G) of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata, based on insights gained from a novel model system we initiated two decades ago. B. glabrata is an intermediate host of the human blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni and serves as the principal model organism for schistosomiasis research. We developed two homozygous lines of B. glabrata, the iM line and iBS90, through 81 and 41 generations of selfing the commonly used M line and BS90, respectively. These lines display contrasting infection ph

BACKGROUND: The microbiome of disease vectors can be a key determinant of their ability to transmit parasites. Conversely, parasite infection may modify vector microbiomes. We explore the interactions between the Biomphalaria glabrata snail microbiome and the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni, responsible for an estimated 200,000 human deaths each year. We have previously shown that the snail hemolymph (i.e. blood) and organs harbor a diverse microbiome. Here, we investigate the impact of schistosome infection on snail microbiomes, hypothesizing that invading schistosomes can alter the snail mic

The decontamination of polluted soils is a major socioeconomic issue in many industrialized countries. In situ remediation approaches are nowadays preferred to ex situ techniques, but they require among others the use of bioindicators, which are sensitive to the progressive depollution on health effects. Animal species have been mainly used so far to monitor aquatic and air pollution. Current research focuses on the development of living indicators of soil pollution. In this study, the garden snail Helix aspersa maxima was acutely exposed to cadmium, one major soil contaminant causing severe h

BACKGROUND: The microbiome is known to play key roles in health and disease, including host susceptibility to parasite infections. The freshwater snail Galba truncatula is the intermediate host for many trematode species, including the liver and rumen flukes Fasciola hepatica and Calicophoron daubneyi, respectively. The snail-parasite system has previously been investigated. However, the specific interaction between the snail-associated microbiota and intra-snail developmental stages of trematodes has yet to be explored.
METHODS: Galba truncatula snails were collected from farms in Northern I

Between 2015 and 2019, a health screening was carried out annually on captive-bred Partula snails prior to export for reintroduction as part of an international effort to repopulate areas of French Polynesia, where the snails were extinct or critically endangered. In total, 129 separate tank populations of 12 different species were screened at ZSL London Zoo. Wet mounts and smears stained with modified Ziehl-Neelsen (MZN) of 535 fecal samples were examined, and 45% contained flagellated protozoa, and 35.5% had MZN-positive oocysts, measuring 3-5 µm in diameter. Smaller (2 µm) presumptive spore

Introduction: Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), remains a public health problem in Ethiopia. Freshwater snails, acting as intermediate hosts, release cercariae, the infectious parasite, into the water, which penetrate human skin that encounters infested waters. The objective of this study was to map snail abundance along rivers and study its association with schistosomiasis infection in communities using these rivers. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at 20 river sites in Mizan Aman city administration, Bench Sheko zone, South West Ethiopia Peopl

Dysregulation of the kynurenine pathway (KP) is implicated in many human diseases and disorders, from immunological, metabolic, neurodegenerative, and neuropsychiatric conditions to cancer, and represents an appealing target for new therapeutic approaches. In this intricate scenario, invertebrates, like Lymnaea stagnalis (LS), provide a flexible tool to unravel the complexity of the KP. Starting from the available LS genome and transcriptome, we identified putative transcripts of all KP enzymes containing an ORF; each predicted protein possessed a high degree of sequence conservation to known

There is a need for recent information on intermediate snail hosts of schistosomes in The Gambia; the previous studies were conducted over three decades ago. This study assessed the incidence, species diversity, distribution and infection status of schistosome intermediate snail hosts in the country. Malacological surveys were conducted in all 5 regions of The Gambia: Central River Region (CRR), Upper River Region (URR), Western Region (WR), Lower River Region (LRR) and North Bank Region (NBR). Sampling of snails was undertaken at 114 sites that included permanent water bodies such as streams
