Introduction: Snake venom composition shows significant inter- and intra-species variation. In the case of the viperid species Bothrops atrox, responsible for the majority of snakebites in the Amazon region, geographical and ontogenetic variables affect venom composition, with ecological and medical implications. Previous studies had shown that venom from neonate and juvenile Bothrops specimens have a higher in vitro coagulant activity. The aim of this investigation was to assess the association of clinical outcomes, such as venom-induced coagulopathy and local complications, with B. atrox ont

The jararacuçu, one of the most dreaded snakes of Brazil, southern Bolivia, Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, is a heavily-built pit viper which may grow to a length of 2.2 m. Up to 1000 mg (dry weight) of highly-lethal venom may be milked from its venom glands on a single occasion. It has accounted for 0.8% to 10% of series of snake bites in São Paulo State, Brazil. We examined 29 cases of proven jararacuçu bites recruited over a 20-year period in two São Paulo hospitals. Severe signs of local and systemic envenoming, (local necrosis, shock, spontaneous systemic bleeding, renal failure) we

BACKGROUND: Snakebite is a neglected tropical disease with a high burden in South Asia, particularly India. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most serious complications of snake envenomation, which has significant morbidity, mortality, and risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The present study aimed to evaluate the incidence, predictors, and outcomes of snakebite-associated AKI (SBE-AKI) in a tertiary care center.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 325 patients with snakebite envenomation, admitted to our institution. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and treatment variables were co

Snakebites are a severe medical and social issue, particularly in tropical and subtropical countries with minimal medical facilities, where the most dangerous snakes are found. Worldwide, most rural areas use medicinal plants alone or in combination as antidotes for snakebite treatment. Local knowledge of medicinal plants for snakebite treatment plays a more critical role in primary healthcare services in rural areas. As a result of this review, it is revealed that 39% of herbs, 38% of shrubs, 18% of trees, 2% of climbers, 2% of bulbs, and 1% of ferns have snake antivenom potential, which is i

BACKGROUND: Snake venoms can exhibit remarkable inter- and intraspecific variation. While diverse ecological and environmental factors are theorised to explain this variation, only a handful of studies have attempted to unravel their precise roles. This knowledge gap not only impedes our understanding of venom evolution but may also have dire consequences on snakebite treatment. To address this shortcoming, we investigated the evolutionary ecology of venoms of Russell's viper (Daboia russelii) and spectacled cobra (Naja naja), India's two clinically most important snakes responsible for an ala

Introduction: Snakebite is recognised as a neglected tropical disease and a cause of substantial morbidity and mortality. Whilst the most medically important snakes are typically native of Asia, Africa, Latin America and Oceania, the possibility of encountering these snakes is no longer limited by geography due to an increasing number of exotic (non-native) snakes being held in captivity. Methods: A retrospective review of snakebite enquiries to the UK National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) between 2009 and 2020. Enquiries about the European adder (Vipera berus) or where the identity of th

Snake bite is a major health hazard, moreover in tropical countries where the density of snakes, frequent human contact, lack of diagnostic and treatment facilities further add-on to the high morbidity and mortality. No organ escapes the effect of envenomation from Heart to liver and kidney, CNS to local bite site. While the effect of snake venom on kidney has been documented, the literature available on the pathological effects of envenomation in human liver is lacking. We present a case of an elderly male with renal and hepatic manifestations of envenomation.

INTRODUCTION: Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) as a cause of snake-bite-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is rarely reported. Very little is known about the clinical course, optimal management, and prognosis of this entity. We describe a series of snake-bite-induced TMA and compare their outcomes with those without TMA.
METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective study of patients with AKI following snake envenomation admitted between January 2012 and December 2017. Demographic profile, clinical parameters, and outcomes were studied. TMA was diagnosed based on presence of triad of microan

OBJECTIVE: To report the outcome of a patient who developed pseudoaneurysms and compartment syndrome after a Deinagkistrodon acutus snakebite.
CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old man, bitten by Deinagkistrodon acutus in his left forearm, came to the hospital eight hours after the bite. Despite the use of antivenom and supportive therapy, the patient developed compartment syndrome of the left forearm, the tissue pressure was elevated and fasciotomy was arranged. During the initial surgery, part of the necrotic tissues was removed. Moreover, two pseudoaneurysms of the ulnar artery were identified at the

We report acute tetraplegia caused by rat bite fever in a 59-year old man (snake keeper) and transmission of Streptobacillus moniliformis. We found an identical characteristic bacterial pattern in rat and human samples, which validated genotyping-based evidence for infection with the same strain, and identified diagnostic difficulties concerning infection with this microorganism.

The present investigation is a retrospective review of snake bites in Riyadh province over the period (2005-2010). A total of 1019 cases of bites admitted to the Ministry of Health medical centers in Riyadh province were analyzed on the basis of age, sex, time of bite and its site on the body, outcome of treatment, antiserum dose and type of snake. Bites occurred throughout the six years with the highest frequency in 2005 and least in 2006 where most of the bite cases were mild and all evolved to cure except four patients who died following the administration of antivenom during 24 h after sna

Snake bites are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in rural areas. Therapeutic plasma exchange has been used in the treatment of many different conditions such as immunologic diseases, toxicologic disorders, and snake envenomation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of plasma exchange treatment on clinical status, outcomes, and discharge of patients who were bitten by venomous snakes. The study was conducted retrospectively in the Emergency Department of Gaziantep University from January 2002 to December 2011. Thirty-seven patients were included in t

PURPOSE: To report two cases of visual loss following snake bite.
METHOD: Retrospective review of medical records including history, examination finding, fundus details and investigation reports (visual field, electroretinogram, visual evoked potential and optical coherence tomogram) at two centers.
RESULT: Two cases of snake bite presented to us with reduction of vision at 1 and 3 months after the incident. The subnormal b wave and abnormal pattern electroretinography in one case pointed at inner retinal dysfunction and neurotoxicity as the cause of visual loss in an apparently normal-looki

Coagulation studies were performed in a patient who had been bitten by a snake of the species Bothrops neuwiedi. The patient presented with hemorrhagic necrosis at the envenomization site and considerable bleeding from venous puncture sites. He developed a severe defibrination syndrome with a clottable fibrinogen level of approximately 0.1 g/l. Fibrinogen was not measurable by clotting time assay. Fibrin degradation products were greatly elevated. Treatment with antivenom caused an anaphylactic reaction within ten minutes and serum sickness after three days. In vitro experiments revealed that

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenomation is a significant public health problem in tropical countries such as India, where agricultural activities increase human-snake encounters. Globally, WHO reports 5.4million bites annually with 81,000-138000 deaths, with India bearing 58,000 fatalities annually, mostly in rural areas. Serious complications such as coagulopathy, acute kidney injury, and shock. Study was carried out to understand the profile of snake bite in Mangalore.

Cysticercosis presents a prevalent issue on a global scale. Nevertheless, disseminated cysticercosis (DCC) is infrequent; even rarer is asymptomatic DCC. Here, we present a unique case of asymptomatic DCC involving the heart in a young male who came to medical attention following a fatal snake bite, ultimately leading to his demise. Despite the widespread dissemination of cysticercosis affecting multiple organs, the individual remained asymptomatic for the condition. We present a case of a 23-year-old male who was brought to the emergency department with a history of alleged snake bites. The p

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) usually occurs after an inciting injury. Poor understanding of pathophysiology, management, and disease awareness has led to misdiagnosis of this condition. We report a rare case of a 69-year-old male who developed CRPS following a Florida Coral snake bite on his right foot. Initially, it was misdiagnosed as recurrent cellulitis; however, he developed chronic right lower extremity (RLE) pain with worsening flares associated with right leg swelling and erythema. Examination was remarkable for nonpitting edema, erythema, and severe tenderness to light touch
