Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) remains widely underdiagnosed, despite its well-established cardiovascular and cognitive consequences. Although continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) remains the first-line treatment for severe OSAS and for moderate OSAS associated with comorbidities, adherence often remains suboptimal. Custom-made mandibular advancement devices (MAD) therefore represent an attractive therapeutic alternative for patients with symptomatic mild to moderate OSAS. Generally better tolerated than CPAP, they are associated with better adherence. This article guides clinic

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a heterogeneous disorder with varying clinical presentations and pathophysiologic mechanisms. Multiple studies demonstrated increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, impaired daytime function and quality of life in moderate to severe OSA. New sleep study metrics are being developed to better predict OSA-related cardiovascular risk that may help to target therapy to patients most likely to benefit. Novel treatments, including hypoglossal nerve stimulation, as well pharmacologic approaches, provide options to personalize therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) may be suspected at interview, notably in case of snoring. Various studies suggested a link between primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and OSAS. The present study sought to determine OSAS prevalence in POAG associated with snoring.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-one snoring glaucomatous patients prospectively underwent simplified polysomnography. Ophthalmologic examination ruled out secondary glaucoma and assessed the glaucomatous neuropathy.
RESULTS: 49% of the patients included were diagnosed with OSAS. Ophthalmologically, glaucoma showed

Snoring is a common complaint, especially among the elderly individuals. In the treatment of snoring, many options, surgical or nonsurgical, are available. In this randomized study, we used a modified technique including some components of radiofrequency-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (RAUP) and Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty UPPP (modified-RAUP, MRAUP) and RAUP in a control group. A total of 60 patients (58 male and 2 female), 30 in each group (MRAUP and RAUP groups), with an average age of 38 +/- 9 years were included in the study. In the MRAUP group, in addition to the modified surgery, preoperative

OBJECTIVES: Snoring is associated with subclinical pharyngeal swallowing dysfunction, probably owing to vibration trauma to the pharyngeal tissues caused by snoring. Negative intrathoracic pressure during apnoea causes stretching of the velum and pharynx. The aim of this study was to investigate whether patients with severe sleep apnoea have an increased frequency of videoradiographically diagnosed subclinical pharyngeal swallowing dysfunction compared with snoring patients with or without mild sleep apnoea as well as with non-snoring controls.
METHODS: Eighty consecutive patients referred fo

A bench study using an artificial lung model was performed to evaluate the snoring detection sensitivity of six (commercially available) auto-nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) devices. Snoring was simulated by a loudspeaker connected to the lung model and abruptly activated during 1 s of each inspiratory period to induce pressure oscillation. The oscillation frequencies chosen were 30, 60, 90, and 120 Hz. For each frequency, the amplitude of the pressure oscillation produced by the loudspeaker was adjusted to find the threshold at which the auto-nCPAP devices detected snoring.

About 40% of adults are habitual snorers. 2% of women and 4% of men between 30 and 60 years of age present additional sleep disordered breathing. There is a continuous spectrum from simple to disease-causing snoring ranging from merely disturbing noises to pharyngeal obstructions and breathing pauses. Repetitive episodes of upper airway obstructions lead to frequent arousals from sleep. Sleep fragmentation is responsible for non-refreshing sleep and subsequent excessive daytime sleepiness resulting in reduced performance at work, social problems and a higher risk for accidents. Furthermore the

IMPORTANCE: It is unknown whether children with primary snoring and children with mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) represent populations with substantially different clinical characteristics. Nonetheless, an obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 1 or greater is often used to define OSA and plan for adenotonsillectomy (AT).
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether a combination of clinical characteristics differentiates children with primary snoring from children with mild OSA.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have linked sleep quality to temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), suggesting a role for snoring in this association. However, the directionality of this relationship remains a subject of debate. This investigation aimed to elucidate the connections between snoring and TMD.
METHODS: This research employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach, leveraging publicly available large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) data on snoring and TMD. We utilised a suite of analytical methods, including the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, maximum

INTRODUCTION: Simple Snoring is low frequency sound without obstructive sleep apnea, produced mainly from vibration of the upper airway wall in the soft palate; it can be bothersome and may causes social problems. So the aim of this study is an attempt for relieving simple snoring though, stiffening the soft palate via transoral diode laser palatoplasty.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty six adult patients with socially troublesome snoring were recruited in this stuy. Adequately history was taken to rule out witnessed evidence of obstructive sleep apnea. Then full otolaryngological examination, wi

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A previously published case report suggested that a chinstrap alone might improve obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We conducted this study to determine whether a chinstrap was a feasible alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in patients with OSA.
METHODS: 26 adult patients with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] > 5/h on diagnostic polysomnogram [PSG]) underwent a modified split-night PSG, using only a chinstrap for the first 2 hours of sleep, followed by CPAP titration for the remainder of the night. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Chronic simulated snoring was induced in rabbits to determine the impact of snoring on the development of atherosclerosis.
METHODS: The pressure wave of induced snoring at the carotid bifurcation of rabbits was acquired by gently pressing the airway. This wave was then simulated using custom-made mechanical devices. Twelve rabbits were used in this study, seven of which were assigned to the experimental group and the remaining five formed the control group. All of the rabbits were raised on a 1% high-cholesterol diet. Either working or sham devices were positioned at t
