Paclitaxel distribution assessment after drug-coated balloon treatment in the superficial femoral artery: SNOW grade.

BACKGROUND: Drug-coated balloons (DCBs) are increasingly being used to treat superficial femoral artery (SFA) lesions during endovascular therapy (EVT). However, the evaluation of paclitaxel distribution following DCB treatment remains challenging. This study aimed to develop a novel criterion to systematically semi-quantitatively grade the degree of paclitaxel distribution using nonobstructive general angioscopy and analyze the clinical factors affecting this criterion. METHOD AND RESULTS: This study included 18 patients (20 limbs) who underwent EVT for SFA lesions using DCBs. Angioscopic ob

Altered functional connectivity strength between structurally and functionally affected brain regions in visual snow syndrome.

Visual snow syndrome (VSS) is a neurological disorder that is predominantly characterized by persistent, dynamic visual disturbances, experienced across the entire visual field. Earlier research highlighted the significance of distinct brain regions, exhibiting alterations in both anatomical structure and functional characteristics. To further investigate the functional role of these regions, we examined the resting-state connectivity between these areas in individuals with VSS and the relation with VSS symptoms and oculomotor measures of visual processing. Forty patients with VSS (53% females

A 37 years [1984-2021] Landsat/Sentinel-2 derived snow cover time-series for Switzerland.

Switzerland, renowned for its mountainous landscapes, holds nearly 10% of Europe's water reserves, with 40% of its running waters originating from snowmelt. Snow plays a crucial role in the country's water management, hydroelectric power, and alpine ecosystems. It supports freshwater supply, agriculture, and tourism, making accurate snow monitoring vital for resource management and environmental preservation. Climate change, however, threatens snow cover, impacting water availability, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. Remote sensing technologies have emerged as key tools for monitoring sno

Data collation for climate-cooling gas dimethylsulfide in Antarctic snow, sea ice and underlying seawater.

Dimethylsulfide (DMS) is a climatically active volatile sulfur compound found in Earth's oceans and atmosphere that plays an important role in cloud formation. DMS originates from its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), which is produced by several classes of phytoplankton. Concentrations of DMS and DMSP in Antarctic sea ice, snow and underlying seawater are not well documented and there is currently no dataset available to find the existing data. The purpose of this project was to compile historical measurements into a publicly available dataset. A total of 220 samples collected sinc

Visual contrast perception in visual snow syndrome reveals abnormal neural gain but not neural noise.

Visual snow syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by a persistent visual disturbance, visual snow, in conjunction with additional visual symptoms. Cortical hyperexcitability is a potential pathophysiological mechanism, which could be explained by increased gain in neural responses to visual input. Alternatively, neural noise in the visual pathway could be abnormally elevated. We assessed these two potential competing neural mechanisms in our studies of visual contrast perception. Cortical hyperexcitation also occurs in migraine, which commonly co-occurs with visual snow syndrome.

Snow cover and late fall movement influence wood frog survival during an unusually cold winter.

Understanding how organisms will respond to altered winter conditions is hampered by a paucity of information on the winter ecology for many species. Amphibians are sensitive to environmental temperature and moisture conditions and may be vulnerable to changes in winter climate. We used a combination of radio telemetry and field enclosures to monitor survival of the freeze-tolerant wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) during the unusually cold winter of 2013-2014. We experimentally manipulated snow cover to determine the effect of snow removal on winter survival. In addition, we placed a group of

Perceptual consensus on cross-country ski-snow performance: a questionnaire study of experts and non-experts.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how skiers and ski technicians perceive snow conditions and ski preparation is essential for optimising glide performance in cross-country (XC) skiing. While tribological research has established how snow microstructure, water-film formation, and ski-snow interactions influence friction, comparatively little is known about how skiers and ski technicians interpret these mechanisms in practice. METHODS: We therefore conducted a nationwide questionnaire study (n = 249) to quantify perceptual consensus on ten topics related to snow type, glide determinants, ski prepara

Tracing North African dust to high latitudes: Magnetic characterization of dust deposited on snow in Finland.

North African dust is frequently transported over thousands of kilometers and deposited across Europe, including high-latitude regions. Although mineralogical differences between Saharan and Sahelian dust are well documented in source regions, the extent to which these signatures are preserved during long-range transport remains unclear. Here we investigate the environmental magnetic properties of dust deposited in Finland during a major North African dust event in February 2021. Magnetic parameters reflecting composition, concentration, and grain-size distribution, together with scanning elec

Natural Snow Accumulation Gradients Mediate Environmental and Plant Trait Responses to Earlier Snowmelt in Alpine Tundra.

Mountain ecosystems are experiencing rapid climate changes, with implications for biodiversity and ecosystem function. Changing snow dynamics, especially earlier melt, are influencing the timing and length of growing seasons, species phenology, and plant abundance. Because mountains are characterized by high topographical and microclimatic variation, effects of changing snow dynamics may depend on small-scale variation in topographically mediated snow accumulation. Wind-scoured areas frequently lack snow cover and thus may be less vulnerable to earlier snowmelt than areas of deep snow accumula

Assessment of Forest Loss Following Snow and Ice Storms Using the LiDAR Forest Structure Change Index.

Assessing forest loss from snow and ice storms is vital for disaster evaluation and sustainable management. Traditional optical remote sensing methods, which focus on horizontal canopy changes, struggle to capture vertical stand alterations caused by snow and ice storms. This study introduces the LiDAR Forest Structure Change Index (LFSCI), a novel index that employs bitemporal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) LiDAR point data to comprehensively evaluate changes in the vertical distribution of forest stands. Following ice storms in Shizishan, Wuhan, China in early 2024, research was conducted to

Microstructure in patients with visual snow syndrome: an ultra-high field morphological and quantitative MRI study.

Visual snow syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by continuous visual disturbance and a range of non-visual symptoms, including tinnitus and migraine. Little is known about the pathological mechanisms underlying visual snow syndrome. Here, we assessed brain morphometry and microstructure in visual snow syndrome patients using high-resolution structural and quantitative MRI. Forty visual snow syndrome patients (22 with migraine) and 43 controls underwent 7-Tesla MRI (MP2RAGE, 0.75 mm isotropic resolution). Volumetric and quantitative T1 values were extracted for white and grey mat

OSTEOCHONDRAL AUTOGRAFT TRANSFER FOR TREATMENT OF STIFLE OSTEOCHONDRITIS DISSECANS IN TWO RELATED SNOW LEOPARDS ( PANTHERA UNCIA).

Two related female snow leopards ( Panthera uncia) were diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle via radiographs and computed tomography. Lesions were either bilateral (Patient 1) or unilateral (Patient 2). Surgical treatment was performed using an osteochondral autograft transfer system following cartilage flap removal. After a 6-wk recovery period, both animals had a markedly improved gait with mild pelvic limb stiffness. Patient 1 developed intermittent lameness 9 mo postsurgery and Patient 2 had mild lameness 3 yr postsurgery. Because of recurrent lameness, b

Sarcomatoid carcinoma arising in the congenital pigmented nevus after treatment with carbon dioxide snow freezing method.

We report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the skin in a 63-year-old man who was treated with the carbon dioxide snow freezing method for a huge congenital pigmented nevus that extended from the right upper extremity to the right trunk during childhood. He had an exophytic red tumor on the nevus in the right upper extremity that grew slowly for 4 years and rapidly recently. Histological and immunohistochemical studies revealed both epithelial and mesenchymal malignancy in the same tumor. The epithelial component was composed of basaloid cells forming multiple nests with peripheral palisading

Closure of endoscopic third ventriculostomy after surgery for posterior cranial fossa tumor: The "snow globe effect".

The management of obstructive hydrocephalus associated to posterior cranial fossa tumor remains a controversial issue. In this context, the role of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) performed before tumor removal (the so-called preoperative ETV) is debated and its success rate is reported as being largely variable in the literature. We describe two children who experienced the closure of a preoperatively performed ETV after the surgical resection of their posterior fossa tumor. In both cases tumor removal was performed in the prone position. Radiological investigations and intraoperative

Technology on Snow and Ice: Innovation, Monitoring, and Performance for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

Elite performance in Olympic winter sports depends on the interplay among the athlete, equipment, and the snow or ice. This naturally evolves with temperature, humidity, wind, preparation, and contact between the equipment and its surface. Together, these factors continuously rebalance the forces of gravity, aerodynamic drag, and friction, requiring athletes, coaches, and organizers to adapt technique, equipment, and surface management, e.g., snow grooming and salting, ice resurfacing or pebbling, and rink climate control. This narrative review (SANRA-guided) synthesizes the scientific literat
