Fear information and social phobic beliefs in children: a prospective paradigm and preliminary results.

This paper presents a first attempt to develop a prospective paradigm to test Rachman's (Behav. Res. Ther. 15 (1977) 375) theory of fear acquisition for social fears. Following the prospective paradigm for animal fears developed by Field et al. (Behav. Res. Ther. 39 (2001) 1259) an attempt is made to adapt this paradigm to look at the effect of fear information in the development of social fears. A large group of normal children (N=135) who were at an age (10-13 years) at which social concerns are most pertinent were tested using this paradigm. They were given positive, negative or neutral inf

Support at Our Fingertips: An Experimental Comparison of In-Person, Video, Voice and Text-Based Support.

Digital forms of communication afford users unprecedented access to supportive others during times of need. Yet there has been little experimental research that compares the nature and effectiveness of informal support provided through digital communication. In this lab-based experiment, 348 female young adults took part in a stressful task and were randomly assigned to receive support from a close female friend through (1) in-person communication, (2) video calling, (3) voice calling, (4) text messaging, or (5) a no-support control condition. In-person, video and voice communication resulted

Citizen interpreters in crisis response: Social capital, ethical trade-offs, and hybrid quality control in emergency language services-A comparative analysis of volunteer-led practices in COVID-19 pandemic and climate disasters.

This study investigates the dual role of citizen interpreters in addressing emergency language gaps during crises, combining social capital theory and crisis ethics. Through comparative case studies of coronavirus disease 2019 responses in Montreal's multilingual communities and Hurricane Ida relief efforts within Louisiana's Haitian-Cajun networks, this research identifies three core tensions: the paradox of relational proximity, trade-offs between immediacy and accuracy in terminology translation, and challenges in scaling informal volunteer networks. The study introduces a hybrid quality co

Working memory capacity in generalized social phobia.

Research suggests that understanding complex social cues depends on the availability of cognitive resources (e.g., Phillips, Channon, Tunstall, Hedenstrom, & Lyons, 2008). In spite of evidence suggesting that executive control functioning may impact anxiety (e.g., Eysenck, Derakshan, Santos, & Calvo, 2007), relatively few studies have examined working memory in individuals with generalized social phobia. Moreover, few studies have examined the role of threat-relevant content in working memory performance in clinically anxious populations. To this end, the present study assessed working memory

Discrepancies in parent and teacher ratings of social-behavioral functioning of children with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: implications for assessment.

Children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome exhibit high rates of social-behavioral problems, particularly in the internalizing domain, indicating an area in need of intervention. The current investigation was designed to obtain information regarding parent and teacher ratings of the social-emotional behavior of children with 22q11DS. Using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), the sample included 67 children with 22q11DS and 59 control subjects. Results indicated significant differences in social-behavioral functioning of children with 22q11DS, as compared to a control group, based on rater type.

Understanding deficient emotional self-regulation in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a controlled study.

While symptoms of deficient emotional self-regulation (DESR) such as low frustration tolerance, temper outbursts, emotional impulsivity, and mood lability are commonly associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), little is known about their nature. The main aim of this post hoc study was to examine the correlates of DESR in a large sample of adults with and without ADHD. Subjects were 206 adults with ADHD and 123 adults without ADHD from a family study of ADHD. Emotional impulsivity was operationalized using items from the Barkley Current Behavior Scale. Subjects were compr

Can Digitization of Health Care Help Low-Resourced Countries Provide Better Community-Based Rehabilitation Services?

In the wake of globalization, proliferation of digital technologies (DTs) is rapidly changing many activities across sectors, including influencing health to "go digital." Harnessing opportunities of DTs can be a pathway for delivery of health services, such as community-based rehabilitation (CBR) to the vulnerable groups of populations, particularly those in countries with low resources where health systems are weak and experiencing a deficit of trained health workers necessary to effectively deliver a full spectrum of health services. This perspective explored how some DTs can be leveraged i

What prevents Chinese parents from reporting possible cases of child sexual abuse to authority? A holistic-interactionistic approach.

The reporting of suspected CSA cases to authorities in a timely manner is important in preventing continued abuse and protecting abused children at early ages. The current study seeks to explore parents' intentions of reporting their own children's CSA experiences to authorities as well as their reporting willingness when they become aware of possible CSA cases happening to children in other families. Two rounds of semi-structured interviews were conducted among a sample of 26 parents in Beijing; these parents were purposefully selected so as to be diverse in terms of gender, age, and socioeco

Horizontal hostility: why you should care.

Nurse-to-nurse, or horizontal, hostility creates a multitude of problems. There are a number of specific and direct problems, including impact on the culture of nursing, stress, healthcare economics, and patient outcomes, that are illustrated in the literature. Horizontal hostility is a pervasive and destructive force that must be addressed in every venue in which nursing is involved. This study discusses the problem of horizontal hostility and the impact it has on nursing and healthcare. Nursing theory is applied to practice and provides concepts and frameworks that are utilized to underscore

Parent emotional expressiveness and children's self-regulation: associations with abused children's school functioning.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying factors associated with school functioning of abused children is important in prevention of long-term negative outcomes associated with school failure. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree to which parent emotional expressiveness and children's self-regulation predicted early school behavior of abused children. METHODS: The sample included 92 physically abused children ages 4-7 and one of their parents (95.7% mothers). Parents completed a measure of their own emotional expressiveness, and parents and teachers provided reports of children's self-regulatory

Staying on and getting back on the wagon: age-related improvement in self-regulation during a low-calorie diet.

In the present study, we investigated whether self-regulation improves across adulthood, especially regarding the mastery of setbacks and failure in an important health-related behavior, namely, staying on a low-calorie diet when overweight. Overweight women (N = 126; 19-77 years of age, M = 47.2) filled out weekly questionnaires on the outcomes of behavioral, emotional, and cognitive self-regulation during a dieting program; outcomes included deviations from the diet, weight loss, affect, and rumination. Confirming hypotheses, multilevel analyses revealed that-even after controlling for prior

Psychiatric disorders of the puerperium in South African women of Nguni origin. A pilot study.

The clinical impression gained from symptoms exhibited by Zulu and Xhosa obstetric patients referred to the Department of Psychiatry, King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, was that certain of the psychiatric disorders presented in a different form to those observed in hospitals serving other population groups. Opinions differ as to the aetiology and relationship of disorders of the puerperium to other psychiatric syndromes with controversial hypotheses referring to both the aetiology and the symptomatology. Firstly, the disorders are considered to be a reaction to specific psychological or biolog

Atypical Neural Activity in Males But Not Females with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPj) are highly involved in social understanding, a core area of impairment in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We used fMRI to investigate sex differences in the neural correlates of social understanding in 27 high-functioning adults with ASD and 23 matched controls. There were no differences in neural activity in the mPFC or rTPj between groups during social processing. Whole brain analysis revealed decreased activity in the posterior superior temporal sulcus in males with ASD compared to control males while process

Social anxiety and attentional bias to negative emotional information: the relationship and intervention.

BACKGROUND: According to the cognitive behavioral model of social anxiety, attentional bias to negative emotional information causes and maintains anxiety. The goal of attentional bias modification (ABM) is to reduce anxiety by reducing attention bias to negative emotional information. METHOD: We used questionnaires and experiments to explore the improvement effect of ABM training on social anxiety in college students. In Study 1, we used dot-probe tasks to investigate the attentional bias to negative emotional information and the relationship with social anxiety severity in college students.
