Mandibular gland chemistry of grass-cutting ants: species, caste, and colony variation.

The compositions of the alarm pheromones of two species of grass-cutting ant, Atta bisphaerica and A. capiguara, were examined, and caste and colony variations quantified. The pheromones of A. bisphaerica and A. capiguara were remarkably similar and were composed of a complex mixture of volatiles in which 4-methyl-3-heptanone and 2-heptanone were the most abundant compounds. Small but consistent intraspecific differences were found between the worker castes and between individual colonies. The results support the view that alarm pheromones are rarely species specific. The possible importance o

High-risk polysubstance use among LGBTQ+ people who use drugs in the United States: An application of syndemic theory.

BACKGROUND: Compared to heterosexual and cisgender people, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) people are more likely to develop problems with high-risk polysubstance use. According to syndemic theory, this disparity in high-risk polysubstance use is produced by the LGBTQ+ community's increased vulnerability to experiencing psychosocial (e.g., discrimination, unwanted sex) and structural (e.g., food insecurity, homelessness) conditions, greater likelihood of coping with concurrent health problems (e.g., human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]),

Personality Traits Induce Different Brain Patterns When Processing Social and Valence Information.

This paper shows the brain correlates of Cloninger's personality model during the presentation of social scenarios under positive or negative valence situations. Social scenarios were constructed when participants played the Dictator game with two confederates that had two opposites roles as the cooperator (Coop) and non-cooperator (NoCoop). Later the same day during a fMRI scanning session, participants read negative (Neg) and positive (Pos) situations that happened to confederates in the past. Participants were asked to think "how do you think those people felt during that situation?" A diss

Embodying disabled liminality: A matter of mal/adjustment to dis/ableism.

This article combines the line of work that links disability and liminality with feminist dis/ability studies to analyse how the 'disabled body-subject' is produced and subjectified during hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation. This analysis is based on six bodily itineraries conducted with three men and three women with a spinal cord injury (five with tetraplegia and one with paraplegia) acquired during their adolescence. First, we interpret hospitalisation as a phase of 'acute liminality' in which the disabled body-subject starts being produced as suspicious, expropriated and de/gendered.

How to Solve Dilemmas Arising from the Idea of Improving Physical Accessibility in Relation to Aesthetics and Architectural Heritage.

The Norwegian state has been working for more than fifteen years on various ways of improving accessibility for the general public. An important part of this work has been to develop new legislation and other forms of formal guidelines to reduce physical barriers. The new Anti-Discrimination and Accessibility Act, Obligation to ensure general accommodation (universal design), came into force January 2009, and introduces some complicated dilemmas, especially when it states: "When assessing whether the design or accommodation entails an undue burden, particular importance shall be attached to th

Affiliation moderates the effects of social threat on stress-related cardiovascular responses: boundary conditions for a laboratory model of social support.

The authors tested the hypothesis that the response-attenuating effects of affiliation under stress are limited to conditions that involve high social threat. Ninety-six young adult women were exposed to standardized psychological challenges in one of four conditions that involved two levels of social affiliation (alone or accompanied by a close friend) and two levels of social threat (variations in the social behavior and perceived status of the experimenter). Social affiliation was associated with attenuated blood pressure responses to the challenges but only under conditions of high social

Everyday discrimination in individuals seeking treatment/receiving support for substance use and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing stigma/discrimination is common in individuals who use substances. However, those with caring responsibilities for individuals who use substances may also be stigmatised and discriminated against (known as affiliate, or courtesy stigma, or stigma-by-association). Comparatively little research has examined the experiences of those who may experience courtesy stigma. METHODS: We conducted an online survey recruiting individuals who were seeking/ receiving treatment for substance use (N = 175); individuals who have caregiving responsibility for somebody seeking or receiv

Targeted harassment, subcultural identity and the embrace of difference: a case study.

This paper examines the significance of experiences and understandings of targeted harassment to the identities of youth subcultural participants, through case study research on goths. It does so against a context of considerable recent public discussion about the victimization of alternative subcultures and a surprising scarcity of academic research on the subject. The analysis presented indicates that, although individual direct experiences are diverse, the spectre of harassment can form an ever-present accompaniment to subcultural life, even for those who have never been seriously targeted.

Stigma, discrimination and medication adherence in schizophrenia: results from the Swedish COAST study.

The aims of this naturalistic non-interventional study were to quantify the level of stigma and discrimination in persons with schizophrenia and to test for potential associations between different types of stigma and adherence to antipsychotics. Antipsychotic medication use was electronically monitored with a Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS®) for 12 months in 111 outpatients with schizophrenia and schizophrenia-like psychosis (DSM-IV). Stigma was assessed at endpoint using the Discrimination and Stigma Scale (DISC). Single DISC items that were most frequently reported included social

An Examination of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder-Related Symptoms Among a Sample of Latinx Sexual- and Gender-Minority Immigrants.

Latinx sexual- and gender- minority (SGM) immigrants experience stress across multiple axes of identity, which can lead to negative health consequences. Using an intersectional-cultural theory of stress, the current study sampled 194 Latinx SGM immigrants to examine the association between intersectional discrimination (i.e., race- and sexual orientation-based), acculturative stress, symptoms related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and somatic distress. We used moderated hierarchical linear regression analysis to determine whether social support moderated the associations among inters

Protective Factors, Risk of Violence and Discrimination and Mental Health Indicators of Young LGB People.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people have more risk of suffering from violence and situations of discrimination than heterosexual people. The current study compares LGB people with heterosexual people in protective factors, violence, health and well-being factors. The sample comprises 609 Spanish people between 14 and 25 years old. We established a cross-sectional design. A survey including questions about sociodemographic information and protective, violence and health and well-being factors was designed ad hoc for this study. The results show that the LGB group (n = 342) is more at risk of

Association of Perceived Stress and Discrimination on Medication Adherence among Diverse Patients with Uncontrolled Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In the United States, many patients remain uncontrolled, in part, due to poor medication adherence. Efforts to improve hypertension control include not only attending to medical management of the disease but also the social determinants of health, which impact medication adherence, and ultimately blood pressure control. PURPOSE: To determine which social determinants - health care access or community and social stressors - explain medication adherence. METHODS: In this cross-section

Gender-based discrimination and its influence on mental health symptoms among people living with and without migraine: A case-control study.

Women are more likely than men to experience migraine and to endorse worse symptoms. Migraine is associated with anxiety, depressive and posttraumatic stress disorders. Women who experience migraine are also more likely to report a history of discriminatory experiences. This study investigated migraine characteristics, mental health outcomes and gender-based discrimination among women using a case-control study with a migraine and non-migraine sample. Two hundred ninety-two women completed an online survey with measures of migraine characteristics (as applicable), mental health symptoms, and g

Smoking Discrimination Moderates the Relationship between Smoking Stigma and Cigarettes Per Day among Sexual and Gender Minority Individuals.

Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals report rates of tobacco use that range from 19% to 40% compared to roughly 20% of the general population. Higher rates of tobacco use, compounded by stress from discrimination, contribute to lower cessation rates and worse smoking-related outcomes for SGM individuals. Having multiple stigmatized identities, such as identifying as SGM and being a person who uses cigarettes, may further increase smoking, and decrease the likelihood of cessation. Smoking-related stigma is one relatively unexplored factor that may be related to smoking frequ

Exploring the social factors influencing the sense of belonging among medical students with disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Medical universities have become more aware of disability inclusion, and have begun taking cognizance of the importance of a supportive environment for students with disabilities. Faculty members can mitigate challenges to legitimacy and belonging by creating safe learning environments built on openness, humility, and actively valuing each learner. However, the factors contributing to these students' sense of belonging in medical university settings remain under-explored. To address this issue, the present study examines social factors influencing the sense of belonging for medic

Perceived discrimination and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults living with HIV in China.

Middle-aged and older adults with HIV experience double discrimination and cognitive impairment due to both their HIV status and their age. However, the relationship between perceived discrimination and self-reported cognitive ability in middle-aged and older people living with HIV (PLWH) is less clear. We measured self-reported perceived discrimination and cognitive ability using the Expanded Everyday Discrimination Scale and the subscale of the AIDS Health Assessment Questionnaire (AIDS-HAQ). The study sample included 324 middle-aged and older PLWH (over 45 years old) from five designated HI

Living with Marfan syndrome: coping with stigma.

Social stigmatization can disrupt the ability of individuals with genetic conditions to successfully adapt to their situation. We offer data on perceptions of stigma from a cross-sectional survey of 174 adults with Marfan syndrome by self-report. Fifty-six respondents (32%) reported feeling discriminated against or socially devalued because of having Marfan syndrome. Endorsement of discrimination was significantly correlated with having depressive symptoms, low self-esteem, the view Marfan syndrome has had significant negative consequences on one's life, striae, and perceptions of workplace di

Skin-deep resilience in the Black women's experiences living with lupus study.

OBJECTIVE: The skin-deep resilience hypothesis suggests that Black Americans from disadvantaged backgrounds who attain academic or professional success despite social obstacles may paradoxically experience adverse physical health outcomes. This study examined skin-deep resilience among a sample of Black women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a disease sensitive to psychosocial stress. METHOD: Data were from 426 Black women with SLE from metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, United States, recruited to the Black Women's Experiences Living with Lupus (BeWELL) Study.
