A quantum-like rumor propagation model captures bimodal spreading dynamics in social networks.

With the proliferation of online social networks, rumors can spread rapidly, amplifying public-opinion risks and threatening social stability. To address this issue, we develop a six-state quantum-like rumor propagation model on a static social network by coupling ternary beliefs with binary behaviors. Unlike traditional discrete-state models, the proposed model uses a density operator to characterize individual states and their temporal evolution, allowing multiple belief-behavior tendencies to coexist. Decoherence models coherence loss induced by environmental noise, while a time-dependent m

[Recommendations for functional evaluation and rehabilitation of chronic low back pain].

The majority of non-specific low back pain has a favourable evolution within a short period of time but in some cases the pain becomes persistent or recurrent. These chronic forms are responsible for most of the social and economic burden of low back pain. The crucial role of psycho-social factors in the chronicisation of low back pain justifies a thorough bio-psycho-social assessment. An active semi-intensive ambulatory multidisciplinary programme (Spine Unit Center) that complies with international and national recommendations (KCE and INAMI) has demonstrated its effectiveness in chronic low

The enduring echoes of juvenile bullying: the role of self-esteem and loneliness in the relationship between bullying and social media addiction across generations X, Y, Z.

OBJECTIVE: Being bullied is a profoundly distressing experience for children and adolescents, with the potential for adverse mental and behavioral outcomes throughout their adult years. This study aims to explore the association between juvenile bullying, self-esteem, loneliness, and social media addiction among men across three generational cohorts: X, Y, and Z. METHOD: The study utilized an online survey, administering structured questionnaires to 797 men aged 18-58 divided into three generational cohorts: 142 individuals from Gen X (born between 1965 and 1980), 275 from Gen Y (born between

Why The Polyvagal Theory Is Untenable: An international expert evaluation of the polyvagal theory and commentary upon Porges, S.W. (2025). Polyvagal theory: current status, clinical applications, and future directions. Clin. Neuropsychiatry, 22(3), 169-184.

Thirty-nine highly acknowledged experts in the areas of the physiology and the evolution of the vagus nerve and of vertebrate social behavior (many whose works have been cited in the polyvagal theory [PVT] literature as supporting the theory) were invited by the first author to participate as co-authors of this article. They were asked to evaluate the PVT and comment upon an overview of the theory written by its author (Porges, 2025a). All those invited, save one, accepted and co-authored the paper. The dissenting scholar was "unfamiliar with the PVT." This article specifically appraises--base

[Evolution, capabilities and limits of psychopharmacology].

Evolution of psychopharmacology is discussed from the viewpoint of the growth of the number of psychotropic drugs, their use and the rate of scientific reports related to them. Power is discussed from the standpoint of economic perspectives, although it is not the only aim. On the other hand, the influence of the psychopharmacological "boom" on the development of the specialty is analyzed. The limits of psychopharmacology achieve their maximum extent when they are combined with the study of psychological, social and cultural factors and determinants and, hence, to other therapeutic methods.

Biopsychosocial determinants of tuberculosis care and treatment outcomes: a scoping review and bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading infectious-disease cause of death globally, with an estimated 10.7 million incident cases and 1.23 million deaths in 2024. Its persistence is driven not by microbial factors alone, but by a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social determinants influencing exposure, vulnerability, and access to care. Despite growing recognition of these biopsychosocial dimensions, the available evidence remains fragmented across disciplines, and no previous review has comprehensively mapped their scope while simultaneously characterizing the st

Sexual selection and canine dimorphism in New World monkeys.

Social and ecological factors are important in shaping sexual dimorphism in Anthropoidea, but there is also a tendency for body-size dimorphism and canine dimorphism to increase with increased body size (Rensch's rule) (Rensch: Evolution Above the Species Level. London: Methuen, 1959.) Most ecologist interpret Rensch's rule to be a consequence of social and ecological selective factors that covary with body size, but recent claims have been advanced that dimorphism is principally a consequence of selection for increased body size alone. Here we assess the effects of body size, body-size dimorp

Bacterial cell-to-cell signaling promotes the evolution of resistance to parasitic bacteriophages.

The evolution of host-parasite interactions could be affected by intraspecies variation between different host and parasite genotypes. Here we studied how bacterial host cell-to-cell signaling affects the interaction with parasites using two bacteria-specific viruses (bacteriophages) and the host bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa that communicates by secreting and responding to quorum sensing (QS) signal molecules. We found that a QS-signaling proficient strain was able to evolve higher levels of resistance to phages during a short-term selection experiment. This was unlikely driven by demograp

Cool sperm: why some placental mammals have a scrotum.

Throughout the Cenozoic, the fitness benefits of the scrotum in placental mammals presumably outweighed the fitness costs through damage, yet a definitive hypothesis for its evolution remains elusive. Here, I present an hypothesis (Endothermic Pulses Hypothesis) which argues that the evolution of the scrotum was driven by Cenozoic pulses in endothermy, that is, increases in normothermic body temperature, which occurred in Boreotheria (rodents, primates, lagomorphs, carnivores, bats, lipotyphylans and ungulates) in response to factors such as cursoriality and climate adaptation. The model argue

Social learning promotes institutions for governing the commons.

Theoretical and empirical research highlights the role of punishment in promoting collaborative efforts. However, both the emergence and the stability of costly punishment are problematic issues. It is not clear how punishers can invade a society of defectors by social learning or natural selection, or how second-order free-riders (who contribute to the joint effort but not to the sanctions) can be prevented from drifting into a coercion-based regime and subverting cooperation. Here we compare the prevailing model of peer-punishment with pool-punishment, which consists in committing resources,

Evolutionary game theory and social learning can determine how vaccine scares unfold.

Immunization programs have often been impeded by vaccine scares, as evidenced by the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) autism vaccine scare in Britain. A "free rider" effect may be partly responsible: vaccine-generated herd immunity can reduce disease incidence to such low levels that real or imagined vaccine risks appear large in comparison, causing individuals to cease vaccinating. This implies a feedback loop between disease prevalence and strategic individual vaccinating behavior. Here, we analyze a model based on evolutionary game theory that captures this feedback in the context of vaccine sca

The symbiotic lifestyle and its evolutionary consequences: social monogamy and sex allocation in the hermaphroditic shrimp Lysmata pederseni.

Sex allocation theory predicts female-biased sex allocation for simultaneous hermaphrodites with a monogamous mating system. Mating systems theory predicts that monogamy is advantageous in environments where refuges are discrete, scarce, relatively small, and when predation risk is high outside of these refuges. These predictions were tested with the Caribbean shrimp Lysmata pederseni, a simultaneous hermaphrodite which has an early male phase and lives inside tubes of the sponge Callyspongia vaginalis. This host sponge is a scarce resource that, together with the high predation risk typical o

The paradox of cooperation benefits.

It seems obvious that as the benefits of cooperation increase, the share of cooperators in the population should also increase. It is well known that positive assortment between cooperative types, for instance in spatially structured populations, provide better conditions for the evolution of cooperation than complete mixing. This study demonstrates that, assuming positive assortment, under most conditions higher cooperation benefits also increase the share of cooperators. On the other hand, under a specified range of payoff values, when at least two payoff parameters are modified, the reverse

Evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods games with common resource dynamics.

Investment in a common resource shared by all players is difficult to evolve despite higher returns because a non-investor (free-rider) always receives more than an investor (altruist). This situation is referred to as the Tragedy of the Commons and is often observed in various biological systems including environmental problems of human society. Punishment and reputation are effective mechanisms but require cooperator's ability to identify free-riders. Volunteering can work in anonymous public goods games but this requires voluntary participation, which is not always the case. Here, we show t

The female orgasm and the homology concept in evolutionary biology.

The definition of homology and its application to reproductive structures, external genitalia, and the physiology of sexual pleasure has a tortuous history. While nowadays there is a consensus on the developmental homology of genital and reproductive systems, there is no agreement on the physiological translation, or the evolutionary origination and roles, of these structural correspondences and their divergent histories. This paper analyzes the impact of evolutionary perspectives on the homology concept as applied to the female orgasm, and their consequences for the biological and social unde

The evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods game with conditional peer exclusion.

Social exclusion can prevent free riders from participating in social activities and deprive them of sharing cooperative benefits, which is an effective mechanism for the evolution of cooperation. However, traditional peer-exclusion strategies are unconditional, and as long as there are defectors in the group, they will pay a cost to exclude the defectors. In reality, one of the reasons for the complexity of these strategies is that individuals may react differently depending on the environment in which they are located. Based on this consideration, we introduce a kind of conditional peer-excl

Recurrence in the evolution of air transport networks.

Changes in air transport networks over time may be induced by competition among carriers, changes in regulations on airline industry, and socioeconomic events such as terrorist attacks and epidemic outbreaks. Such network changes may reflect corporate strategies of each carrier. In the present study, we propose a framework for analyzing evolution patterns in temporal networks in discrete time from the viewpoint of recurrence. Recurrence implies that the network structure returns to one relatively close to that in the past. We applied the proposed methods to four major carriers in the US from 1

Indirect reciprocity with optional interactions.

Indirect reciprocity is a mechanism for the evolution of cooperation that is relevant for prosocial behavior among humans. Indirect reciprocity means that my behavior towards you also depends on what you have done to others. Indirect reciprocity is associated with the evolution of social intelligence and human language. Most approaches to indirect reciprocity assume obligatory interactions, but here we explore optional interactions. In any one round a game between two players is offered. A cooperator accepts a game unless the reputation of the other player indicates a defector. For a game to t

Brains, brawn and sociality: a hyaena's tale.

Theoretically intelligence should evolve to help animals solve specific types of problems posed by the environment, but it remains unclear how environmental complexity or novelty facilitates the evolutionary enhancement of cognitive abilities, or whether domain-general intelligence can evolve in response to domain-specific selection pressures. The social complexity hypothesis, which posits that intelligence evolved to cope with the labile behaviour of conspecific group-mates, has been strongly supported by work on the sociocognitive abilities of primates and other animals. Here we review the r

Past, Present and Future: A Historical Analysis and Reflection of 100 Years of Nursing Leadership.

This paper critically examines the evolution of nursing leadership over the past century, exploring how changing historical, social and professional contexts have influenced styles and their ongoing relevance to contemporary nursing practice. Using a historical analysis guided by Lewenson and Hermann's framework, primary sources, including archival materials and foundational texts, were examined alongside secondary scholarly literature and historical commentaries. Leadership approaches were reviewed by decade and mapped against key nursing theories, healthcare developments and broader social m
