Hormonal effects on behaviours in animals and humans are now well enough understood for general statements about causal steps to be proposed. Facilitation or repression of a given behaviour by a given hormone can depend on the person's genetic and developmental history, on the temporal and spatial parameters of the hormone's administration, on the hormone's metabolism and on the specific receptor isoform available in a given neuron. The gene for oestrogen receptor-alpha is required for an entire chain of behaviours essential for reproduction, from courtship through maternal behaviours. In orde

Commercialization of animal biotechnology is a wide-ranging topic for discussion. In this paper, we will attempt to review embryo transfer (ET) and related technologies that relate to food-producing mammals. A brief review of the history of advances in biotechnology will provide a glimpse to present and future applications. Commercialization of animal biotechnology is presently taking two pathways. The first application involves the use of animals for biomedical purposes. Very few companies have developed all of the core competencies and intellectual properties to complete the bridge from lab

On the 24/09/2023, a video of a suspected rabid bull at a livestock market in Ghana was shared on social media and was seen by a local veterinary officer. This led to an on-site investigation by veterinary authorities on the 25/09/2023 which concluded that the bull had been bitten by a three-month old dog 4 days previously. The puppy, which was killed and buried after the bite, was subsequently exhumed, tested and confirmed positive for rabies. The bull was humanely destroyed. Brain tissue from the bull was collected and sent to the Accra Veterinary Laboratory for further analysis. RABV was co

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission has decreased with the adoption of universal blood donor screening and social policies to reduce the risk of infection in intravenous drug users, but remains a worldwide health problem. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among sequences from different HCV genomic regions from sexual partners of infected patients. Nine couples with a stable relationship and without other risk factors for HCV infection and 42 control patients were selected, and the NS3 and NS5B regions were analysed. Phylogenetic analysis showed that vi

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interactions, communication, and behavior. Multiple lines of evidence support the notion that most cases of autism likely have an underlying genetic cause or predisposition. Like mental retardation, autism is likely to be caused by many different genetic mechanisms and genes rather than a single, or few, major genes or environmental effects. In this review, we will focus on the cytogenetic contribution to uncovering regions of the genome involved in autism. Some common cytogenetic imbalances already known to cause a

This paper analyses the complex issues faced by regulators of the infertility treatment industry in response to the social and technological changes that heralded a new openness in knowledge about genetics, paternity and the concomitant need for donor offspring to know their genetic origins. The imperative for full information about their donor and biological father, who contributed to their creation and half of their genome, was an outcome unanticipated by the architects of the donor insemination programme. Genetic paternity testing realised the possibility of fixed and certain knowledge abou

Background: Microarray testing is commonly used as a screening method for phenotypic traits and common diseases and for genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Despite the known limitations, microarray services can potentially be used as a prescreening tool for chromosomal disorders, which affect approximately 0.4-0.6% of the world population, followed by further clinical diagnostic methods when appropriate. Case Presentation: Here we present a case study of a male subject in his 40s who underwent direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing that utilized microarray, which revealed the absence of

Aim: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) involves prenatal growth delay, impaired facial and CNS development and causes severe clinical, social-economic burdens. Here, we aim to detect DNA-methylation aberrations associated with FASD and potential FASD diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. Patients & methods: The FASD diagnosis was established according to golden-standard protocols in a discovery and independent replication cohort. Genome-wide differential methylation association and replication analyses were performed. Results: We identified several loci that were robustly associated with

Keratoconus (KC; Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) 14830) is a bilateral, progressive corneal defect affecting all ethnic groups around the world. It is the leading cause of corneal transplantation. The age of onset is at puberty, and the disorder is progressive until the 3 rd -4 th decade of life when it usually arrests. It is one of the major ocular problems with significant social and economic impacts as the disease affects young generation. Although genetic and environmental factors are associated with KC, but the precise etiology is still elusive. Results from complex segregation analys

Advances in understanding the molecular basis of rare and common disorders, as well as in the technology of DNA analysis, are rapidly changing the landscape of molecular genetic and genomic testing. High-resolution molecular cytogenetic analysis can now detect deletions or duplications of DNA of a few hundred thousand nucleotides, well below the resolution of the light microscope. Diagnostic testing for "single-gene" disorders can be done by targeted analysis for specific mutations, by sequencing a specific gene to scan for mutations, or by analyzing multiple genes in which mutation may lead t

Forest fragmentation and isolation are critical threats to arboreal marsupials. The endangered southern greater glider (Petauroides volans) is vulnerable to the effects of forest loss and fragmentation, yet the species' natural dispersal patterns and genetic outcomes under different habitat contexts remain poorly understood. This study characterises population genomic patterns in southern greater gliders from continuous and isolated forests in southeastern New South Wales, Australia. Using genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms, we genotyped southern greater gliders (n = 70) sampled from

Observational studies have found loneliness and social isolation to mediate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and schizophrenia. Limitations with observational studies (e.g., confounding and reverse causation), however, have meant the robustness of these relationships has thus far not been explored. To address this gap, the current study utilized genomic structural equation modeling (genomic SEM) and Mendelian randomization (MR) to perform a genetic mediation analysis between childhood maltreatment, loneliness/isolation, and schizophrenia, using summary statistics from three geno

OBJECTIVES: Confirming the existence and composition of the shared genetic basis of Schizophrenia and cannabis and cigarette smoking has critical values for the clinical prevention and intervention of psychosis.
METHODS: To achieve this goal, we leveraged Genome-Wide summary statistics of Schizophrenia (n = 99,934), cigarette smoking (n = 518,633) and cannabis usage (n = 162,082). We applied Causal Analysis Using Summary Effect Estimates (CAUSE) and genomic structural equation modeling (GenomicSEM) to quantify the contribution of a common genetic factor of cannabis and cigarette smoking and s

Scientific evidence supports an interactive model of biopsychosocial influences on the etiology of eating disorders. New genome-wide association studies suggest underlying metabolic dysregulation in anorexia nervosa. Among the psychological factors, body dissatisfaction (IC) is the most consistent predictor, mainly in females. Low self-esteem, negative affect and internalization of the ideal of thinness predict IC. Certain personality traits and other individual factors such as a high body mass index, emotional problems and some metabolic and digestive diseases, social factors such as some spo

Neuronal growth regulator 1 (NEGR1) belongs to the immunoglobulin (IgLON) superfamily of cell adhesion molecules involved in cortical layering. Recent functional and genomic studies implicate the role of NEGR1 in a wide spectrum of psychiatric disorders, such as major depression, schizophrenia and autism. Here, we investigated the impact of Negr1 deficiency on brain morphology, neuronal properties and social behavior of mice. In situ hybridization shows Negr1 expression in the brain nuclei which are central modulators of cortical-subcortical connectivity such as the island of Calleja and the r

CONTEXT: Anxiety disorders are common, with a lifetime prevalence of 20% in the U.S., and are responsible for substantial burdens of disability, missed work days and health care utilization. To date, no causal genetic variants have been identified for anxiety, anxiety disorders, or related traits.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a phobic anxiety symptom score was associated with 3 alternative polygenic risk scores, derived from external genome-wide association studies of anxiety, an internally estimated agnostic polygenic score, or previously identified candidate genes.
DESIGN: Longitudina

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is typically asymptomatic until rupture, and established risk factors do not fully explain its occurrence. Whether social isolation, loneliness, polygenic susceptibility, and systemic inflammation jointly influence AAA risk remains unclear.
METHODS: We included 356,181 White British participants from the UK Biobank free of AAA at baseline. Social isolation and loneliness indices were derived from questionnaires. A genome-wide polygenic risk score (PRS) for AAA was constructed using PRS-CS and grouped into tertiles. The systemic immune-inflammation i

OBJECTIVE: Traditional observational research has suggested a connection between socioeconomic position, mental health, and sleep apnea (SA), but the specifics of this connection are still unclear. Using the Mendelian randomization approach, we intended to evaluate the potential causal link between mental health, socioeconomic status, and SA.
METHODS: Our research employed summary statistics data from large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on mental health, socioeconomic status, and SA. In the main study, the connection between mental health, socioeconomic status, and SA was exami

RTL1/PEG11, which has been associated with anxiety disorders, is a retrotransposon-derived imprinted gene in the placenta. However, imprinting patterns and functions of RTL1 in the brain have not been well-investigated. We found Rtl1 was paternally, but not maternally, expressed in brain stem, thalamus, and hypothalamus of mice, and imprinting status of RTL1 was maintained in human brain. Paternal Rtl1 knockout (Rtl1m+/p-) mice had higher neonatal death rates due to impaired suckling, and low body weights beginning on embryonic day 16.5. High paternal expression of Rtl1 was detected in the loc

Genetic mutations identified in genome-wide association studies can only explain a small percentage of the cases of complex, highly heritable human conditions, including neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders. This suggests that intergenerational epigenetic effects, possibly triggered by environmental circumstances, may contribute to their etiology. We previously described altered DNA methylation signatures in the sperm of mice that experienced developmental overexposure to thyroid hormones as a result of a genetic defect in hormone clearance (DIO3 deficiency). Here we studied fetal bra
