Social differences of very preterm birth in Europe: interaction with obstetric history. Europop Group.

Social differences of very preterm birth (22-32 completed weeks of amenorrhea) were studied using data from a large case-control survey in Europe between 1994 and 1997; 1,675 very preterm births and 7,965 full-term births were included. The relation between social factors and very preterm birth was studied according to obstetric history and the mode of delivery onset. Very preterm birth was significantly related to low educational level among women with no previous adverse pregnancy outcome (odds ratio (OR) = 2.67, 95 percent confidence interval (CI) 1.66-4.28) and among primigravid women and

The social nature of parks: associations between social interactions and park visitation and physical activity among children and adolescents.

Parks can support physical activity and socializing. While children and adolescents' use of these settings is largely socially driven, little is known about relationships between social factors and park visitation and physical activity. This study examined associations between social interactions in parks and park use behaviour among children and adolescents, respectively. Children (8-12 years, n = 213) and adolescents (13-18 years, n = 210) self-reported accompaniment, frequency of socializing during park visits, frequency of seeing known people in parks, park visitation (frequency, duration)

How Response Styles Moderate the Relationship between Daily Stress and Social Interactions in Depression, Social Phobia, and Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Stress and social isolation are potent predictors of negative health outcomes and are impacted in mood and anxiety disorders. Difficulties in social interactions have been particularly noted in people diagnosed with major depression disorder (MDD) and social phobia (SP). It remains poorly understood, however, how these variables interact on a moment-to-moment basis and which variables moderate this relationship. Psychological flexibility, or the ability to be open to experiences while maintaining engagement in valued activities, may help moderate the relationship between stress a

Social anxiety, acute social stress, and reward parameters interact to predict risky decision-making among adolescents.

Risk-taking behavior increases during adolescence, leading to potentially disastrous consequences. Social anxiety emerges in adolescence and may compound risk-taking propensity, particularly during stress and when reward potential is high. However, the manner in which social anxiety, stress, and reward parameters interact to impact adolescent risk-taking is unclear. To clarify this question, a community sample of 35 adolescents (15-18yo), characterized as having high or low social anxiety, participated in a study over two separate days, during each of which they were exposed to either a social

Social relationships and ambulatory blood pressure: structural and qualitative predictors of cardiovascular function during everyday social interactions.

Healthy normotensive men and women (N = 102) underwent a 3-day ambulatory blood pressure (BP) assessment in which a BP reading was taken 5 min into each social interaction. After each interaction, participants completed a diary that included structural categorization of the relationship and ratings of the quality of the relationship with the interaction partner. Random regression analyses revealed that interactions with family members and spouses were associated with lower ambulatory BP. Interactions with ambivalent network members (characterized by both positive and negative feelings) were as

Differential pathways linking social interaction and Loneliness among university students in the age of artificial intelligence: the mediating role of Social Capital.

Based on Social Capital theory, this study explores the mechanisms linking emerging forms of social interaction and individual Loneliness among university students in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), from the perspective of Social Capital accumulation within AI-mediated social environments. Using survey data collected from university students, a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was employed to analyze the relationships among key variables. Specifically, social interaction preferences (including behavioral preferences and image presentation preferenc

Social anxiety mismatch is associated with reduced inter-brain synchrony and altered neural coordination dynamics during social interaction: An fNIRS hyperscanning study.

People with high social anxiety (HSA) experience self-disclosure difficulties that disrupt interpersonal interaction. Inter-brain synchrony (IBS) has been proposed as a neural index of interpersonal coupling during social interaction, yet how dyadic social anxiety composition shapes IBS remains unclear. Using fNIRS hyperscanning, this study examined IBS during a closeness-generation task in 21 low-low (LL), 23 high-high (HH), and 23 low-high (LH) social anxiety dyads. Participants reported state anxiety, perceived closeness, and post-event processing (PEP). HSA individuals reported higher stat

Friend or foe: effects of social experience and genetic line on responses of young gilts in a social challenge paired interaction test.

The increased focus on group housing of sows in commercial pig production emphasises the importance of saving appropriate gilts which later become sows that are well-adapted to group housing systems. This study aimed to assess the short-term effects of social mixing experience and genetic line on social and exploration responses of young gilts in standardised 3-min social challenge paired interaction tests. The study included 96 gilts, from 26 litters, of two different genetic lines (Swedish Yorkshire and Dutch Yorkshire). These lines were chosen because the dam lines have been selected in gro

The regulation of social factors on anxiety and microglial activity in nucleus accumbens of adolescent male mice: Influence of social interaction strategy.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period characterized by a high vulnerability to emotional disorders, which are modulated by biological, psychological, and social factors. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. METHODS: Combining physical or emotional social defeat stress (PS and ES) and pair or isolation rearing conditions, we investigated the effects of stress type and social support on emotional behavior and central immune molecules in adolescent mice, including anxiety, social fear, and social interaction strategies, as well as changes in microglia-specific molecules (io

Social Interaction With an Alcohol-Intoxicated or Cocaine-Injected Peer Selectively Alters Social Behaviors and Drinking in Adolescent Male and Female Rats.

BACKGROUND: Drinking alcohol is facilitated by social interactions with peers, especially during adolescence. The importance of peer social influences during adolescence on alcohol and substance use has recently received more attention. We have shown that social interaction with an alcohol-intoxicated peer influences adolescent alcohol drinking differently in male and female rats using the demonstrator-observer paradigm. The present set of experiments analyzed the social interaction session to determine changes in social behaviors and subsequent alcohol drinking in adolescent male and female r

Validation of socialbit as a smartwatch algorithm for social interaction detection in a clinical population.

Social interaction supports brain health and recovery after neurological injury. Yet no validated tool exists for real-time measurement in individuals with and without neurological deficits. We developed SocialBit, a lightweight, privacy-preserving machine learning algorithm that detects social interactions using ambient audio features on a commercial smartwatch. In a prospective validation study, we evaluated SocialBit against livestream minute-by-minute human-coded ground truth in 153 hospitalized stroke patients who wore the device for up to 8 days, generating 88,918 min of observation. Neural Bases of Collective Social Behavior and Group Interactions across Species.

Collective group behavior is a key form of social interaction observed across animal species, including humans. These collective behaviors, such as flocking and herding, emerge from individual actions within complex group dynamics and can often lead to group phenomena such as social norms and trends. By investigating different species-insects, fish, birds, and mammals-ongoing efforts have revealed both shared and species-specific neural processes involved in collective social dynamics. Newly evolving technologies, such as motion tracking and behavioral sequencing, have enabled the detailed mea

Predicting Alcohol Use in Undergraduates: Interactions Between Social Anxiety and Impulsivity.

Background: Links between social anxiety and risky drinking in college are well documented, but the specifics of this relationship are mixed and likely complex. Impulsivity may play a critical role in enhancing vulnerability for risky drinking in individuals with social anxiety. Objectives: Here we examined how impulsivity moderates the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol use in college students. 515 undergraduates (18-24 years) who endorsed at least moderate levels of alcohol use were included. Participants completed self-report questionnaires to quantify social anxiety, impulsive

On the neural networks of self and other bias and their role in emergent social interactions.

Extensive research has documented the brain networks that play an integral role in bias, or the alteration and filtration of information processing in a manner that fundamentally favors an individual. The roots of bias, whether self- or other-oriented, are a complex constellation of neural and psychological processes that start at the most fundamental levels of sensory processing. From the millisecond information is received in the brain it is filtered at various levels and through various brain networks in relation to extant intrinsic activity to provide individuals with a perception of reali

An investigation of economic interactions between social reinforcement and heroin or cocaine in rats.

The primary goal of the present study was to determine the economic relationship between heroin and social reinforcement in rats: are they substitutes, independents, or complements? In Experiment 1, one group of rats was given a budget of responses that they could allocate between heroin and social reinforcement offered at various combinations of prices. A second group chose between two levers that each resulted in social reinforcement at varying prices when pressed. There was no relationship between the relative allocation of responses between heroin and social reinforcement and changes in th

Influence of social inclusion and institutional culture on students' interactions in clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: Decolonisation of the Speech-Language and Hearing (SLH) professions in South Africa to be Afrocentric is a current focus. These professions continue to hold white Eurocentric English and/or Afrikaans knowledges and practices, which are reflective of the minority. As diversity of students in higher education increases, the obvious incongruency between the language of learning and teaching (English) and institutional culture of the programmes and students who use English as an Additional Language (EAL) becomes heightened. OBJECTIVES: The study's aim was to explore the learning and s

The role of motion in the neural representation of social interactions in the posterior temporal cortex.

Humans are an inherently social species, with multiple focal brain regions sensitive to various visual social cues such as faces, bodies, and biological motion. More recently, research has begun to investigate how the brain responds to more complex, naturalistic social scenes, identifying a region in the posterior superior temporal sulcus (SI-pSTS; i.e., social interaction pSTS), amongst others, as an important region for processing social interaction. This research, however, has presented images or videos, and thus the contribution of motion to social interaction perception in these brain reg

Swipe right, swipe left: Initial interactions in social anxiety disorder.

Individuals with SAD have difficulties initiating and maintaining relationships. However, little is known about the preinteraction behavior of individuals with SAD. Individuals with (n = 40) and without SAD (n = 40) who reported being attracted to individuals of the opposite sex participated in a preregistered lab-based experiment using a novel task similar to existing initial interaction/dating applications. Specifically, participants viewed 112 profiles of individuals from the opposite sex that included pictures (either happy/smiling or neutral) and descriptive texts and were requested to ch

Social interactions lead to motility-induced phase separation in fire ants.

Collections of fire ants are a form of active matter, as the ants use their internal metabolism to self-propel. In the absence of aligning interactions, theory and simulations predict that active matter with spatially dependent motility can undergo motility-induced phase separation. However, so far in experiments, the motility effects that drive this process have come from either crowding or an external parameter. Though fire ants are social insects that communicate and cooperate in nontrivial ways, we show that the effect of their interactions can also be understood within the framework of mo

Elevated Neurobehavioral Responses to Negative Social Interactions in Women With Bulimia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a complex psychiatric illness that includes binge-purge behaviors and a belief that one's value as a person depends on body shape and weight. Social pressure strongly influences the development and maintenance of BN, but how this manifests neurobiologically within an individual remains unknown. We used a computational psychiatry approach to evaluate neural mechanisms underlying social interactions in BN. METHODS: Behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 24 women with BN and 26 healthy comparison women using an iterated s
