Is health care seeking for irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia a socially learned response to illness?

In a population-based study of 207 subjects with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional dyspepsia (FD) and controls (n = 100), we aimed to determine whether dimensions of abnormal illness behavior from the Abnormal Illness Behaviour Questionnaire and aspects of social learning of illness behavior from the Social Learning of Illness Behaviour scale were independent predictors of health care seeking for IBS and FD. Results showed that dimensions of abnormal illness behavior and aspects of social learning of illness behavior (encouragement, reinforcement, and modeling) did not significantly

Learned phenotypes emerge during social stress modifying hippocampal orexin receptor gene expression.

Psychological distress, including anxiety or mood disorders, emanates from the onset of chronic/unpredictable stressful events. Symptoms in the form of maladaptive behaviors are learned and difficult to treat. While the origin of stress-induced disorders seems to be where learning and stress intersect, this relationship and molecular pathways involved remain largely unresolved. The hippocampus, studied for its role in learning, is divided into regions that designate the passage of neuronal signaling during memory formation, including dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, CA2, and CA1. Inputs into these hip

Altered structure and functional connectivity of the hippocampus are associated with social and mathematical difficulties in nonverbal learning disability.

The hippocampus is known to play a critical role in a variety of complex abilities, including visual-spatial reasoning, social functioning, and math. Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in visual-spatial reasoning that are accompanied by impairment in social function or mathematics, as well as motor or executive function skills. Despite the overlap between behaviors supported by the hippocampus and impairments in NVLD, the structure and function of the hippocampus in NVLD has not been studied. To address this gap in the literature, we

Mobilize to vaccinate: lessons learned from social mobilization for immunization in low and middle-income countries.

Creating and sustaining demand for immunization services is a global priority to ensure that vaccine-eligible populations are fully protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. Social mobilization remains a key health promotion strategy used by low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to promote vaccination demand. In this commentary, we synthesize illustrative evidence on successful social mobilization efforts promoting the uptake of immunization services in select LMICs. The first example focuses on Sierra Leone's routine immunization program during the Universal Child Immunization initiativ

The relationship of self-injurious behavior and aggression to social skills in persons with severe and profound learning disability.

In this study, we investigated differences in social skills among four groups of individuals with severe and profound learning disabilities. The comparison groups were composed of individuals engaging in self-injurious behavior, aggression, both behaviors, or neither of the behaviors. We measured social skills using the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills for Individuals with Severe Retardation, a standardized assessment of social skills in persons with severe or profound learning disability. The results indicated that individuals displaying maladaptive behaviors exhibited a restricted range of

Equine-Assisted Learning and Social-Emotional Competence in Higher Education: An Exploratory Study of Emerging Adults' Experiences.

PURPOSE: Equine-assisted learning (EAL) is an experiential educational approach that engages learners in structured human-horse activities to support character development, interpersonal growth, and life skills. Social-emotional learning (SEL) is increasingly recognized as an important aspect of student development, supporting both wellbeing and academic success. Although much studies have explored how horses may support human health and wellbeing, limited research has explored how undergraduate students experience EAL in relation to SEL within non-Western higher education contexts. Concept-Aware Learning Framework for Detecting Common Symptoms in Social Media Text: Model Development and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media offers valuable information for public health surveillance, but detecting valid symptom expressions in noisy and informal text remains challenging. Fine-tuned language models can achieve strong test accuracy while relying on spurious patterns, limiting their reliability in real-world applications. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a more robust symptom detection model by incorporating surveillance-relevant attributes into the training objective and introducing a counterfactual-based evaluation framework to assess attribute sensitivity. METHODS: We proposed a con

Social Justice, Science Agency, and Collaborations: Using Participatory Science to Enhance Learning Outcomes in Postsecondary STEM Courses.

Participatory sciences (any science that depends on the knowledge or involvement of the public) are increasingly being included in undergraduate courses. Although they have most often been integrated into undergraduate courses to engage students, we expand ideas of how these approaches can be used to promote student learning. First, we explore three theoretical frameworks, culturally sustaining pedagogy, control value theory, and the ICAP (Interactive, Constructive, Active, Passive) framework, that help explain why incorporating participatory science is an effective classroom practice at disru

Radiology No-Show Calculator: A Social Determinants of Health-Enriched Machine Learning Prediction Model With Financial Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Outpatient radiology appointment no-shows delay timely diagnosis and exacerbate health care disparities, while also resulting in a significant financial and operational burden on health care systems. Machine learning models offer a promising tool for identifying at-risk patients before no-shows occur. We sought to develop a machine learning model enriched with social determinants of health (SDOH) factors to predict outpatient radiology no-shows and evaluate the health equity and financial implications of targeted interventions. METHODS: In this institutional review board-approved r

Transcranial direct current stimulation suggests a causal role of the medial prefrontal cortex in learning social hierarchy.

Social hierarchies can be inferred through observational learning of social relationships between individuals. Yet, little is known about the causal role of specific brain regions in learning hierarchies. Here, using transcranial direct current stimulation, we show a causal role of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in learning social versus non-social hierarchies. In a Training phase, participants acquired knowledge about social and non-social hierarchies by trial and error. During a Test phase, they were presented with two items from hierarchies that were never encountered together, requiri

Identifying Environmental and Social Factors Predisposing to Pathological Gambling Combining Standard Logistic Regression and Logic Learning Machine.

Identifying potential risk factors for problem gambling (PG) is of primary importance for planning preventive and therapeutic interventions. We illustrate a new approach based on the combination of standard logistic regression and an innovative method of supervised data mining (Logic Learning Machine or LLM). Data were taken from a pilot cross-sectional study to identify subjects with PG behaviour, assessed by two internationally validated scales (SOGS and Lie/Bet). Information was obtained from 251 gamblers recruited in six betting establishments. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, li

Examining the offender-victim overlap among police officers: the role of social learning and job-related stress.

This study uses data from the Police Stress and Domestic Violence in Police Families in Baltimore, Maryland 1997-1999 to examine the offender-victim overlap among police officers in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV). Specifically, the study examines the role of parental violence, child maltreatment, and job-related stress on perpetrating violence and victimization. Results from two logistic regression models indicate that one element of job-related stress (negative emotions) was positive and significant in predicting IPV perpetration, whereas parental violence, child maltreatment,

Two-year-olds' social learning from others' mistakes in the context of a modified trap-tube task.

Three experiments examined 2-year-olds' (N = 140) social learning of tool use from others' mistakes using a modified trap-tube task. All participants were ethnic Chinese residing in Taiwan. In Experiment 1A, children observed either tool-pushing actions that led to a trapping error followed by successful retrieval (with the error removed or retained), two tool-pushing retrievals, irrelevant manipulation, or no demonstration. Children who did not see the error during the correction relied exclusively on imitation of tool-pushing and, unlike other groups, showed no emulation-based retrieval. Exp
