"It Could Be Anybody" Content Analysis of Lay Perceptions of Individuals Committing Online Child Sexual Offences.

The aim of this study was to explore lay person perceptions of individuals who commit online child sexual offenses. Online sexual abuse of children encompasses a wide range of offenses. Shame due to stigma and fear of consequences are significant barriers to help-seeking among individuals who commit online child sexual abuse. Lay perceptions of individuals committing online child sexual offenses were explored through an online survey in Norway. Responses (n = 573) to a question asking the respondents to describe the typical online child sexual offender were analyzed through a qualitative conte

The HIV Epidemic Among Individuals with Mental Illness in the United States.

People with depression and other mental illness comprise a growing proportion of individuals living with HIV in the United States; at the same time, the prevalence of HIV among mentally ill individuals is at least seven times higher than in the general population. Individuals with mental illness are particularly vulnerable to infection with HIV because of several factors, including the higher prevalence of poverty, homelessness, high-risk sexual activities, drug abuse, sexual abuse, and social marginalization found in this population. Nevertheless, mentally ill individuals are often not screen

Housing in crisis: A qualitative study of the socio-legal contexts of residential evictions in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) commonly experience housing vulnerability due to the intersection of drug laws, housing policies, gentrification, and social marginalization. Housing vulnerability produces social suffering amongst PWUD and is linked to health and social harms. In Vancouver, Canada, the rapid gentrification of the Downtown Eastside - a low-income inner-city neighbourhood - and the lack of affordable housing has led to residential evictions emerging as a key community concern. This study sought to understand the policies and practices that produced evictions among PWUD, s

A paradigm shift for health equity in implementation science.

BACKGROUND: Research and theory in the field of implementation science (IS) are increasingly prioritizing health equity. Although this shift is an important development for the field, IS has not yet systematically engaged with theories and methods of critical social science that help to clarify the challenges and opportunities of efforts to improve health equity. In our paper, we present a summary of recent contributions to dialogue on health equity in the field of IS and highlight the value of critical social science theory to advance research and action for social justice and equity in imple

Prevalence, Correlates, and Sequelae of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) among Indigenous Canadians: Intersections of Ethnicity, Gender, and Socioeconomic Status.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a severe and concerning public-health problem globally, but some children are at higher risk of experiencing it. The harms caused by colonization and particularly the inter-generational legacy of residential schools would presumably increase the vulnerability of Indigenous children in former British colonies. Among 282 Indigenous participants in Canada recruited from Prime Panels, CSA was reported by 35% of boys, 50% of girls, and 57% of trans and gender non-conforming participants. These rates are substantially higher than global meta-analytic estimates (7.6% of bo

"It just feels right": Perceptions of the effects of community connectedness among trans individuals.

Trans individuals (e.g. trans men and women, non-binary, gender fluid) are at higher risk for mental health concerns, in part due to marginalization. Previous work has documented the effects of social support and community engagement on health outcomes. However, individuals' perceptions of community engagement effects may point to opportunities for intervention. This mixed methods study examines trans individuals' perceived effects of participating in trans communities on health outcomes. Semi-structured in-person interviews were conducted with 20 individuals, and 60 individuals participated i

'Hard-to-Reach' or 'Hardly Reached'? Underservice, Marginalisation and Inequity in Care.

In mental health care, the term 'hard-to-reach' is frequently used in relation to individuals and populations who have reduced access and engagement with services. While positioned as a neutral term, this term can conceal and minimise the multiple factors influencing access to and engagement with care. It also clearly places the responsibility for disengagement as an individual decision or failing, removing responsibility from services themselves. In this paper, we consider the term 'hard-to-reach' and provide a counter-framing of 'hardly reached' to centre patterns of underservice within ment

Reducing social isolation in schools: a social network analysis of the HOPE bullying prevention program.

BACKGROUND: School bullying is a public health concern, disproportionately affecting socially isolated students. Peer network position strongly influences vulnerability to victimization. This study examined the effectiveness of a Korean school-based bullying prevention program, HOPE, using social network analysis (SNA). METHODS: From an initial intervention cohort of 275 students, a total of 204 students (112 boys, 92 girls) who completed both pre- and post-intervention measures across nine classrooms were included in the final analysis (attrition rate: 25.8%). In-degree centrality (IDC), defi

Intersectionality and health-related stigma: insights from experiences of people living with stigmatized health conditions in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Health-related stigma is a complex phenomenon, the experience of which intersects with those of other adversities arising from a diversity of social inequalities and oppressive identities like gender, sexuality, and poverty - a concept called "intersectionality". Understanding this intersectionality between health-related stigma and other forms of social marginalization can provide a fuller and more comprehensive picture of stigma associated with health conditions. The main objective of this paper is to build upon the concept of intersectionality in health-related stigma by explori

Deaf Identity, Social Relationships, and Social Support: Toward a Microsociological Perspective.

This study is the first to analyze data from a national survey to investigate the significance for deaf identity of the different forms of social and technological support that deaf people rely upon. Data were derived from a survey among 839 deaf people and were analyzed with regard to social identification as deaf, hearing, bicultural, and marginal. Findings showed connections between technology and identity, including the use of a range of technology to support being culturally deaf. Findings also showed that the deaf and hearing groups had strong homophilous social networks, while the bicul

Implementing trachoma control programmes in marginalised populations in Tanzania: A qualitative study exploring the experiences and perspectives of key stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Despite aspects of the SAFE strategy for reducing trachoma in Tanzania have been somewhat successful, the disease still persists in marginalised communities even with repeated trachoma control interventions. This study aims to understand the facilitators and barriers associated with implementing trachoma control programmes in these communities, from the perspective of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). METHODS: Participants were the representatives of NGOs who had knowledge and experience in the implementation of trachoma control programmes. Data was collected using in-depth,

Strengths and challenges among Black and Latinx people living with HIV during COVID-19: A mixed-methods investigation of the translation of self-management across syndemic health crises.

Black and Latinx people are disproportionately impacted by HIV, COVID-19, and other syndemic health crises with similar underlying social determinants of health. Lessons learned from the HIV pandemic and COVID-19 response have been invoked to improve health equity at the systemic level in the face of other emergent health crises. However, few have examined the potential translation of strategies between syndemics at the individual level. The current mixed-methods study examined strategies used to manage HIV during the COVID-19 pandemic and the extent to which they were helpful in managing COVI

The effects of social support and self-efficacy on hopefulness in low-income older adults during COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Social support and self-efficacy play a significant role in improving positive psychological well-being in marginalized older adults. However, to date, there are few studies identifying the relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic. We examined the effect of social support and self-efficacy on hopefulness in a majority Black sample of marginalized low-income older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This study used baseline data from a clinical trial designed to increase COVID-19 testing in Essex County, NJ, United States. The dataset involved participants 50 years old

The compounding burden of disability in Mexico: social protection gaps, chronic disease excess, and prospective mortality from national open data sources.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities (PWD) face disproportionate barriers to social protection and healthcare worldwide, yet comprehensive multi-source evidence linking social security coverage, morbidity, and mortality outcomes remains scarce in Latin America. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, multi-source population-based study with a prospective cohort component, integrating nine nationally representative Mexican data sources (2017-2023) encompassing over 125 million persons. Disability was operationalized using source-specific measures, including Washington Group-based instruments

The impact of alcohol minimum pricing policies on vulnerable populations and health equity: A rapid review.

Alcohol minimum pricing policies, including minimum unit pricing (MUP), are effective strategies for reducing alcohol consumption and related harm. However, their equity implications remain underexplored. We conducted a rapid review of PubMed and Web of Science, identifying 37 real-world studies assessing the impacts of alcohol minimum pricing. Studies from diverse contexts were synthesised with respect to vulnerable populations and health equity, focusing on consumption, health outcomes, and economic effects. Findings indicate that minimum pricing reduces consumption among people who drink he

[Invisible in the culture of remembrance in medicine? The Dresden-based urologist and venereologist Dora Gerson (1884-1941) was persecuted because of her Jewish heritage].

The history of urology is traditionally considered to be male-dominated. However, the field has never been exclusively "male medicine"-neither in terms of patients nor medical staff. This article highlights the life and work of Dresden-based physician Dora Gerson (1884-1941), one of the first German female specialists in urology and dermatovenereology, and draws attention to the widespread invisibility of women in the culture of memory of the field. Gerson studied medicine in Munich and Leipzig at the beginning of the 20th century and worked in both clinical and social medicine in the followin
