Mapping the Conversation: A Network Analysis of World Continence Week on Twitter/X.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Female urinary incontinence affects over 60% of women globally. Despite its prevalence, social stigma limits public discussions. World Continence Week (WCW) June 17-23, 2024, aimed to increase awareness using coordinated social media campaigns. We aimed to evaluate the impact of official hashtags and campaigns during WCW on public engagement on Twitter/X. METHODS: We searched the posts containing official WCW hashtags (#CommitmentToCollaborationIncontinenceCare, #WCW2024, #ContinenceMatters, and #SupportIncontinence) and additional hashtags (#incontinence, #female

Validity of a brief egocentric social network assessment in adults with alcohol use disorder: Direct comparison of 5-alter and 20-alter versions.

Objective: Social network analysis offers a high-resolution framework for understanding social influences on alcohol use, but full-length assessments confer significant burden, giving rise to brief measures. However, few studies have empirically compared brief and full-length assessments. To address this, the present study examined the internal and external validity of both brief and full egocentric social network assessments and their ability to capture weak social ties. Method: In 405 adults (57.5% female) with alcohol use disorder, a full egocentric social network assessment estimated drink

Mixed Methods for Research on Support Networks of People Experiencing Chronic Illness and Social Marginalization.

Substantial research has focused on how social networks help individuals navigate the illness experience. Sociologists have begun to theorize beyond the binary of strong and weak social network ties (e.g., compartmental, elastic, and disposable ties), citing the social, economic, and health conditions that shape their formation. However, limited research has employed mixed social network methods, which we argue is especially critical for examining the "non-traditional" social support networks of marginalized individuals. We employ quantitative social network methods (i.e., the egocentric netwo

Understanding Social Support and Opinion Leaders in a Tuberculosis-Related Online Community in China: Content and Network Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases. Yet, despite the growing role of online health communities (OHCs) as key sources of social support, research on TB-related online communities remains scarce. Network analysis has been increasingly used to study OHCs and identify opinion leaders (OLs), offering a valuable approach to advancing knowledge about TB-related online communities. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the types of social support and the influence of OLs in a prominent TB-related online forum in China, with a particular focus on its curate

Modelling the creation of friends and foes groups in small real social networks.

Although friendship networks have been extensively studied, few models and studies are available to understand the reciprocity of friendship and foes. Here a model is presented to explain the directed friendship and foes network formation observed in experiments of Mexican and Hungarian schools. Within the presented model, each agent has a private opinion and a public one that shares to the group. There are two kinds of interactions between agents. The first kind represent interactions with the neighbors while the other represents the attitude of an agent to the overall public available inform

Detecting Clusters/Communities in Social Networks.

Cohen's κ, a similarity measure for categorical data, has since been applied to problems in the data mining field such as cluster analysis and network link prediction. In this paper, a new application is examined: community detection in networks. A new algorithm is proposed that uses Cohen's κ as a similarity measure for each pair of nodes; subsequently, the κ values are then clustered to detect the communities. This paper defines and tests this method on a variety of simulated and real networks. The results are compared with those from eight other community detection algorithms. Results show

Network analysis highlights socio-demographic patterns of stone tool-using primates.

While the nutritional benefits and social learning of tool use in primates have been widely studied, far less is known about how tool use is associated with social life. We investigated the social aspects of tool use in a hybrid population of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis aurea × M. f. fascicularis) on Koram Island, Thailand, comprising both stone tool users and non-users. To assess potential socio-demographic patterns, we examined whether tool use differed between sexes and whether it was related to variation in dominance rank. Using social network analyses, we assessed whether to

Informal Caregiver Social Network Types and Mental Health: The Mediating Role of Psychological Resilience.

Little is known about whether and why social networks protect mental health among informal caregivers. This study examined the association between informal caregiver social network types and depressive symptoms and the mediatory mechanism of psychological resilience. Latent class analysis, applied to cross-sectional data on 278 Singaporean caregivers, identified four social network types: restricted (42%), friend (16%), family (21%), and diverse (21%). Path analysis showed that the diverse social network type, compared to the restricted social network type, was associated with a lower level of

The role of whole network analysis in understanding health behaviours: a systematic review of smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and diet.

BACKGROUND: Health behaviours such as smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and dietary habits are not only individual choices but are influenced by social interactions and relational contexts. Recently, Whole Network Analysis (WNA) has become a powerful methodological tool to explore how these behaviours spread and become established within social systems. Unlike egocentric approaches, which focus on individuals' personal networks, WNA captures the entire structure of social relations within a defined population. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of empirical studies applying WNA

Altered functional connectivity of the dorsal attention network among problematic social network users.

Many smartphone users spend excessive amounts of time online and cannot control their behavior, and the addictive overuse of social-networking services has been shown to be associated with diminished executive control. Attentional control is a cognitive process crucial to exerting executive functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate functional connectivity (FC) characteristics of attention networks in problematic social-network users. We performed seed-based resting-state FC analyses for 29 males and 10 females with excessive social network use and 32 healthy males and 17 healthy

Mapping Risk and Opportunity: A Space-Based Affiliation Network Analysis of Physical and Virtual Spaces Among High Risk Men.

BACKGROUND: Social and sexual networks, particularly the spaces where men who have sex with men (MSM) meet and interact, play a crucial role in shaping HIV risk and prevention behaviors. However, few studies have leveraged venue-level data to optimize the reach of targeted interventions in China. METHODS: We conducted a venue-based social network analysis among 301 MSM recruited through online platforms and time-location sampling in a major metropolitan area. Participants identified social spaces they frequented, including both physical venues and digital platforms. We characterized these spa

Social network mechanisms of behavior change in alcohol use disorder recovery: A longitudinal observational cohort study.

Social factors play a pivotal role in both the development of and recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD), and social network analysis provides a rigorous framework to understand these influences. The current study applied social network analysis to understand recovery from AUD, with a secondary aim of examining sex differences in social network influences. A cohort of adults with AUD making a significant recovery attempt (N = 501) were followed over six waves during a 1-year period (83% retention) and completed assessments of egocentric networks (up to 20 closest alters) and drinking behavio
