It's the thought that counts: The role of hostile cognition in shaping aggressive responses to social exclusion.

Prior research has confirmed a casual path between social rejection and aggression, but there has been no clear explanation of why social rejection causes aggression. A series of experiments tested the hypothesis that social exclusion increases the inclination to perceive neutral information as hostile, which has implications for aggression. Compared to accepted and control participants, socially excluded participants were more likely to rate aggressive and ambiguous words as similar (Experiment 1a), to complete word fragments with aggressive words (Experiment 1b), and to rate the ambiguous ac

Neural response to self- and other referential praise and criticism in generalized social phobia.

CONTEXT: Generalized social phobia (GSP) is characterized by fear/avoidance of social situations. Previous studies have examined the neural responses in GSP to one class of social stimuli, facial expressions. However, studies have not examined the neural response in GSP to another equally important class of social stimuli, the communication of praise or criticism. OBJECTIVE: To examine the neural response to receipt of praise or criticism in GSP; specifically, to determine whether patients with GSP show an increased response to the receipt of both praise and criticism and whether self-relevan

Hypomanic trait is associated with a hypovigilant automatic attentional response to social cues of danger.

OBJECTIVES: Hypomania in bipolar disorders is characterized by disinhibited, fearless and reward-seeking behavior. This behavioral pattern suggests that early and automatic responding to socio-emotional cues such as facial expressions might be aberrant in hypomania. The present study tested the predictions that participants selected on hypomania-like trait would show hypovigilant responses to facial cues of danger and increased responses to facial cues of reward. METHODS: From a group of 513, the 16 most trait-hypomanic individuals were selected by use of a shortened version of an established

Effects of social anxiety and evaluative threat on cardiovascular responses to active performance situations.

This study investigated the joint influence of trait social anxiety and evaluative threat on psychological and cardiovascular responses to active coping situations. Fifty-two normotensive female students characterized as either high or low in trait social anxiety performed a mental arithmetic task and a speech task requiring persuasive behavior in a context of high or low evaluative threat. Trait social anxiety exerted a substantial influence on cardiovascular reactivity. High socially anxious individuals overall exhibited greater heart rate reactivity. For systolic and diastolic blood pressur

Agoraphobics and social phobics: differences in background factors, syndrome profiles and therapeutic response.

Seventy-three agoraphobic and 31 social phobic women, all rated unsuitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy, were compared regarding family and personal history, intelligence, personality and factors pertaining to the disorder. The same patients, with 11 men included in the social phobic group, were also compared regarding response to four randomly assigned types of treatment given over a 3 month period, with a 9 months' follow-up. The following differences were revealed: 1) Social phobias were associated with a higher social class of the parental home, higher education, higher scores on ver

Response variability reveals hidden social-category effects in facial-expression categorization.

The "happy-face advantage" (HFA)-faster categorization of happy versus fearful expressions-is typically established using mean reaction times (RTs), which obscure the structure of the RT distribution. The present research examined how facial expression and social-category cues influence emotion categorization using ex-Gaussian modelling, decomposing RTs into mean (μ), variability (σ), and slow-tail responding (τ). Ex-Gaussian modelling revealed that expression effects were distributed across distinct components of the RT distribution. Whereas mean RT (μ) replicated the happy-face advantage, σ

Refining the role of behavioural and social sciences in pandemic response post-COVID-19.

With the acute stage of COVID-19 behind us, reflection can inform future preparedness. During the pandemic, behavioural and social sciences often studied human behaviour through the lens of alignment with public health recommendations, implicitly treating concern and compliance as desirable and rational. While understandable, this emphasis was relatively narrow. Uncertainty, uneven risk distribution and competing values could have led to heterogeneous appraisals of risk and intervention benefit, even with the evidence available at the time. We show that engaging with the possibility that peopl

The mentalizing network updates neural representations of romantic interest in response to social feedback.

When we think about the start of a successful close relationship, we often imagine two people independently evaluating each other. But what if how much we like someone depends on how much we think they like us? In the current study, we asked how social feedback changes how one thinks about potential romantic partners, as well as how often one thinks about them. We hypothesized that the mentalizing network would play a role in both of these processes. During a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan, participants watched dating profile videos of eight different target individuals, both befor

Clinical, social, and motility factors influencing transanal irrigation response in pediatric patients.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic constipation (CC) and fecal incontinence (FI) are significant problems for pediatric patients. Transanal irrigation (TAI) is a therapy that effectively relieves symptoms in patients with disorders of gut-brain interactions (DGBI) or organic CC/FI. This mixed-methods study aimed to identify predictive factors for TAI adherence and outcomes in pediatric patients. METHODS: Out of 151 screened patients, 63 were eligible for enrollment, with a 60.3% response rate and 97.3% survey completion. We analyzed adherence, symptom severity, quality of life (QOL), and manometry data from

Autistic traits modulate neural responses to social signals during natural vision.

Differences in social perception, a hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are also evident at subclinical levels in the general population. However, it remains unclear how such variation in autistic traits relate to neural processing of different types of social information. Here, we investigated whether autistic traits in neurotypical individuals are associated with neural responses to a broad array of social perceptual features during watching naturalistic stimuli using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We also tested the generalizability of these effects across two experim

The Lenacapavir effect: Triumphalist rhetoric and the displacement of social and structural responses to HIV prevention.

Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication for HIV prevention with proven high efficacy in randomised controlled trials, has been widely positioned as a "game-changing" technology capable of ending the AIDS epidemic. Despite the withdrawal of major donor funding that necessitates a critical reappraisal of HIV prevention priorities, lenacapavir has been rapidly embedded within global policy discourse through claims of exceptional efficacy, anticipated cost-efficiency, and potential epidemiological impact. These narratives reflect a long-standing pattern of

A transdiagnostic approach to understanding neural responsivity to reward and its links to social motivation.

Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) are characterized by social impairments. Social impairment also occurs in the general community. Across clinical and nonclinical groups social impairment may be related to deficits in social approach and/or social avoidance motivation. However, the neural basis of social motivation deficits in SZ and BD is not well understood, nor is it known if they reflect features of the illness or are secondary to other factors such as social isolation. To fill these knowledge gaps, 31 individuals with SZ, 27 with BD, and 42 community comparisons (CCs) completed

Reduced reward responsiveness and depression vulnerability: Consideration of social contexts and implications for intervention.

Depression is a prevalent, heterogeneous, and debilitating disorder that often emerges in adolescence, and there is a need to better understand vulnerability processes to inform more targeted intervention efforts. Psychophysiological methods, like event-related potentials (ERPs), can offer unique insights into the cognitive and emotional processes underlying depression vulnerability. I review my and others' research examining ERP measures of reward responsiveness in youth depression and present a conceptual model of the development of low reward responsiveness, its role in depression vulnerabi

Social and clinical drivers of stress responses in African American breast cancer survivors.

Racial differences in breast cancer morbidity and mortality have been examined between Black/African American women and White women as part of efforts to characterize multilevel drivers of disease risk and outcomes. Current models of cancer disparities recognize the significance of physiological stress responses, yet data on stress hormones in Black/African American women with breast cancer and their social risk factors are limited. We examined cortisol levels in Black/African American breast cancer patients and tested their association with social and clinical factors to understand the relati

Social Support and Spousal Relationship Quality Improves Responsiveness among Anxious Mothers.

Maternal responsiveness, a mother's ability to consistently identify infant cues and then act on them, is critical for healthy child development. A woman's social support and spousal relationship may affect responsiveness to an infant, especially among mothers with anxiety. We assessed how social support and spousal relationship quality is associated with responsiveness among anxious mothers, and if postpartum depression (PPD) moderated these associations. Cross-sectional data were collected from 2019 to 2022 in a public hospital in Pakistan from 701 women at six-weeks postpartum. Eligible wom

Protective effects of exercise on responses to combined social and environmental stress in prairie voles.

The combination of social and environmental stressors significantly influences psychological and physical health in males and females, and contributes to both depression and cardiovascular diseases. Animal models support these findings. Voluntary exercise may protect against some forms of stress; however, the protective effects of exercise against social stressors require further investigation. This study evaluated the influence of exercise on the impact of combined social and environmental stressors in socially monogamous prairie voles. Following a period of social isolation plus additional c

Air pollution exposure and social responsiveness in childhood: The cincinnati combined childhood cohorts.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects about 1 in 44 children and environmental exposures may contribute to disease onset. Air pollution has been associated with adverse neurobehavioral outcomes, yet little research has examined its association with autistic-like behaviors. Therefore, our objective was to examine the association between exposure to air pollution, including NO2 and PM2.5, during pregnancy and the first year of life to ASD-like behaviors during childhood. Participants (n = 435) enrolled in the Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study and the Health Outcomes and Measu

Sex-specific behavioral, neurobiological, and cardiovascular responses to chronic social stress in mice.

Psychosocial stress promotes and links mood and cardiovascular disorders in a sex-specific manner. However, findings in animal models are equivocal, in some cases opposing human dimorphisms. We examined central nervous system (CNS), behavioral, endocrine, cardiac, and hepatic outcomes in male or female C57Bl/6 mice subjected to chronic social stress (56 days of social isolation, with intermittent social confrontation encounters twice daily throughout the final 20 days). Females exhibited distinct physiological and behavioral changes, including relative weight loss, and increases in coronary re

Shame in Response to Affective Expression and Its Relation to Social Anhedonia and Schizotypy Traits.

Schizotypy is marked by negative symptoms including blunted affect, social isolation, and social anhedonia. Contemporary personality theory suggests that maladaptive shame regulation may disrupt interpersonal function across personality disorders. We hypothesized that "affect shame"-a conditioned response of shame evoked by openly expressing emotions would co-occur with interpersonal deficits in schizotypy. As hypothesized, affect shame was associated with interpersonal deficits (r = 0.17, p < 0.001), physical anhedonia (r = 0.13, p = 0.001), and social anhedonia (r = 0.17, p = 0.001). The obs
