Trans architecture and the prison as archive: "don't be a queen and you won't be arrested".

Most incarceration settings around the world are governed by strong cisnormative policies, architectures, and social expectations that segregate according to a person's legal gender (i.e. male or female). This paper draws on the lived experiences of 24 formerly incarcerated trans women in Australia and the U.S. to elucidate the way in which the prison functions according to Lucas Crawford's theory of trans architecture, alongside Jacques Derrida's notion of archive fever. The paper displays how the cisnormative archive of the justice system and its architectural constructs impact trans women i

Idiopathic subglottic stenosis in Saskatchewan Hutterite population.

BACKGROUND: By studying the odds of developing idiopathic subglottic stenosis in the isolated and genetically unique Hutterite population, this study sought to strengthen the hypothesis that an underlying genetic predisposition may exist for its development. METHODS: A retrospective chart review examined the medical records of all adult patients treated for idiopathic subglottic stenosis in Saskatchewan between 2008 and 2018. Cases were segregated into Hutterite and non-Hutterite. RESULTS: Four out of 36 cases of idiopathic subglottic stenosis occurred among Hutterites. The odds of a Hutteri

Hippocampal mechanisms and neural circuitry of negative symptoms in schizophrenia.

Negative symptoms represent a debilitating core of schizophrenia symptomatology that fail to respond to treatment with D2 antagonist antipsychotic drugs and may even be exacerbated by D2 antagonism. The neurobiological mechanisms underlying these symptoms are proposed to be related to limbic hippocampal hyperactivity, which is associated with the loss of parvalbumin-expressing GABAergic interneurons. This hippocampal hyperexcitability generates aberrant excitatory and dysrhythmic output to key limbic regions. Dysregulation of limbic hippocampal projections to the ventral striatum could impair

Associations of area-level and individual-level sociodemographic factors with adolescent phenotypes linked to subsequent cancer risk.

BACKGROUND: Indices of Concentration at the Extremes (ICEs) serve as joint proxies for social and environmental hazards for health disparities. We tested the hypothesis that ICEs at birth predict timing of menarche and adolescent overweight and investigated whether ICE associations are mediated by individual-level variables. METHODS: In this prospective study, a subset of offspring from the Child Health and Development Studies, born 1959-1967 in Oakland, CA were assessed for early age at menarche (<12 vs. >=12) and overweight body mass index, (BMI, >25 kg/m2) at ages 15-17 years. Healthcare disparities in colorectal cancer prevention for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A caregiver perspective.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is crucial for early detection, but people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face significant healthcare disparities, including lower screening rates. OBJECTIVE: This study explores barriers and facilitators to CRC screening for individuals with IDD from the caregiver perspective. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 caregivers (eight women, mean age 45) of individuals with IDD in Austria and analyzed using thematic analysis. A modified version of the Bowel Cancer Awareness Measure (CAM) questionnaire wa

Spectral dissociation of lateralized brain rhythms.

Using high resolution spectral methods to uncover neuromarkers of social, cognitive and behavioral function, we have found that hemi-lateralized pairs of oscillations such as left and right occipital alpha or left and right rolandic mu dissociate spectrally. That is, they show a shifted frequency distribution, with one member of the pair peaking at a slightly lower frequency than the other. Resorting to the analysis of EEG spatio-spectral patterns, we provide examples of dissociations in the 10Hz frequency band. Occasionally, hemi-lateralized pairs blend into medial aggregates, probably when f

Functional neuroanatomy of racial categorization from visual perception: A meta-analytic study.

We effortlessly sort people into different racial groups from their visual appearance and implicitly generate racial bias affecting cognition and behavior. As these mental activities provide the proximate mechanisms for social behaviours, it becomes essential to understand the neural activity underlying differences between own-race and other-race visual categorization. Yet intrinsic limitations of individual neuroimaging studies, owing to reduced sample size, inclusion of multiple races, and interactions between races in the participants and in the displayed visual stimuli, dampens generalizab

Representation matters: advocating for increased diversity in the pediatric surgical workforce to address health inequity.

Equitable health is the state in which all have the opportunity to attain full health potential and no disadvantage from achieving this because of social position or another socially defined circumstance [1]. One measure of society is marked by how vulnerable populations, like children, are treated, including the right to achieve and access good health. Focusing on health equity helps to address the social determinants of health which can adversely affect pediatric care and threatens surgical outcomes for the most vulnerable children in society [1-5]. Inextricable from attaining health equity

Clients' perceptions of barriers and facilitators to implementing hepatitis C virus care in homeless shelters.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is highly prevalent among homeless persons, yet barriers continue to impede HCV testing and treatment in this population. We studied the experiences of homeless individuals related to accessing HCV care to inform the design of a shelter-based HCV prevention and treatment program. METHODS: Homeless shelter clients (10 women and 10 men) of a large shelter in San Francisco participated in gender segregated focus groups. Focus groups followed a semi-structured interview format, which assessed individual, program/system, and societal-level barriers and facilitat

Racial composition in K-12 schooling and cognitive health of older Black adults.

BackgroundIn the U.S., historical legal and contemporary social segregation results in K-12 school differences based on racial composition. We hypothesize that racial composition of K-12 schools contributes to higher Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementia risk among non-Hispanic Black (NHB) older adults.ObjectiveTo better understand the social determinants of AD, this original research study adopts a life course perspective. Specifically, we investigate associations between K-12 schools' racial composition and later-life cognitive health among U.S.-born and educated NHB older adults.Met

Progress and Challenges in Laboratory-Based Diagnostic and Screening Approaches for Aneuploidy Detection during Pregnancy.

Aneuploidy is caused by problems during cellular division and segregation errors during meiosis that lead to an abnormal number of chromosomes and initiate significant genetic abnormalities during pregnancy or the loss of a fetus due to miscarriage. Screening and diagnostic technologies have been developed to detect this genetic condition and provide parents with critical information about their unborn child. In this review, we highlight the complexities of aneuploidy as a disease as well as multiple technological advancements in testing that help to identify aneuploidy at various time points

Kirrel3 is required for the coalescence of vomeronasal sensory neuron axons into glomeruli and for male-male aggression.

The accessory olfactory system controls social and sexual interactions in mice that are crucial for survival. Vomeronasal sensory neurons (VSNs) form synapses with dendrites of second order neurons in glomeruli of the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). Axons of VSNs expressing the same vomeronasal receptor coalesce into multiple glomeruli within spatially conserved regions of the AOB. Here we examine the role of the Kirrel family of transmembrane proteins in the coalescence of VSN axons within the AOB. We find that Kirrel2 and Kirrel3 are differentially expressed in subpopulations of VSNs and tha

Schistosomiasis in women: manifestations in the upper reproductive tract.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a neglected disease entity which may give rise to considerable suffering among women of child-bearing age in areas where schistosomiasis (especially due to Schistosoma haematobium) is prevalent. The close relation between the vessels in genital organs and the urinary bladder enables the parasite to easily change location to virtually any organs in the female pelvic area. Symptoms concur with the anatomical location of worm pairs and their ova. Lesions of the lower female genital tract can easily be investigated by cytology, histology or direct demonstrat

Association of Neighborhood Social Determinants of Health with Acute Kidney Injury during Hospitalization.

KEY POINTS: AKI is common among hospitalized patients. However, the contribution of neighborhood social determinants of health to AKI risk is not known. We found that among 26,769 hospitalized patients, 26% developed AKI. Patients who lived in the most disadvantaged areas (highest tertile of Area Deprivation Index) had a 10% greater odds of developing AKI than counterparts in the lowest Area Deprivation Index tertile. Patients who lived in rural areas had 25% greater odds of not recovering from AKI by hospital discharge. This study demonstrates an association between neighborhood disadvantage

Gender minority stress, resilience, and coping experiences of trans women incarcerated in Australia.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Trans women in carceral settings are an identified "priority group" due to the significant stigma, discrimination, violence, sexual assault, harassment, and mistreatment they experience, resulting in a substantial mental health disparity compared to the general incarcerated population. In Australia, most incarceration settings continue to segregate persons based on their genitalia (i.e. sex characteristics) as opposed to their gender. This paper seeks to explore the ways in which trans management and housing policies in Australia effect and affect their experiences of psych

The mental health of university students in South Africa: Results of the national student survey.

BACKGROUND: We estimate 30-day prevalence of 11 common mental disorders among a representative sample of university students in South Africa and explore disparities in student mental health across historically segregated institutions and marginalised groups. METHODS: Cross-sectional data collected in self-report surveys of students (n = 28,268) from 17 universities were weighted to adjust for differences in survey responses. Poisson regression was used to estimate risk ratios (RRs). RESULTS: Prevalence estimates were highest (21.0-24.5 %) for two anxiety disorders (social anxiety disorder, P

Gender and LGBTQ+ representation across college majors and achievement levels using nationally representative US data.

Gender segregation across college majors persists, yet how these patterns vary across achievement levels and intersect with LGBTQ+ identity remains unclear. We examine whether field cultures and social norms may create 'in-group benefits' for lower-achieving members of field-specific majority groups. Using two nationally representative US longitudinal datasets (the High School Longitudinal Study, n = 6,340; and the Baccalaureate and Beyond Class of 2016, n = 12,950), we estimate relative representation across majors spanning male-majority physics/engineering/computer science to female-majority

Differential links in 16p11.2 deletion carriers reveal aberrant connections between large-scale networks.

Qualitatively different topographical patterns of connections are thought to underlie individual differences in thought and behavior, particularly at heteromodal association areas. As such, we hypothesized that connections unique to 16p11.2 deletion carriers compared to controls, rather than hyper- or hypo-connectivity, would serve as a better model to explain the cognitive and behavioral changes observed in individuals carrying this autism-risk copy number variation. Using a spatially-unbiased, data-driven approach we found that differential links clustered non-uniformly across the cortex-par

Exome sequencing identifies homozygous variants in MBOAT7 associated with neurodevelopmental disorder.

Intellectual disability (ID) is a large group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by a congenital limitation in intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, and problem solving), adaptive behavior (conceptual, social, and practical skills), originated at birth and manifested before the age of 18. By whole exome sequencing of five consanguineous Pakistani families presenting hallmark features of ID, global developmental delay, aggressive and self-injurious behaviors, microcephaly, febrile seizures and facial dysmorphic features, we identified three novel homozygous missense variants
