Measuring beliefs about free will: a critical review of the Free Will Inventory.

This review critically evaluates the Free Will Inventory (FWI), a 29-item self-report instrument assessing beliefs about free will, determinism, and dualism, by situating it within broader philosophical and psychological frameworks and prior attempts to measure free will beliefs. To identify relevant peer-reviewed studies, a structured literature search using systematic principles was conducted to locate research that has validated or critiqued the FWI. The review also considers how free will belief is conceptualised and operationalised within the FWI, and the implications this has for interpr

Validation of the Intention Attribution Test for Children (IAC).

The Intention Attribution Test for Children (IAC) was created to assess hostile attribution bias in preschool- and early school-aged children. It comprises 16 cartoon strips presenting situations in which one character (either a child or an adult) causes harm to another, either intentionally, accidentally (nonintentional), or without his or her intention being clear (ambiguous). Its validity was tested on 233 children aged 4 to 12 years. Exploratory factor analysis and item response theory models demonstrated support for a single factor of hostile attribution bias for the ambiguous and noninte

The development and psychometric evaluation of a new measure of dissociative activities.

The psychometric properties of a new measure of dissociative behaviors, the Scale of Dissociative Activities (SODAS), were evaluated. Undergraduates (n = 533) completed the SODAS, 2 other established self-report measures of dissociative behaviors, and a measure of socially desirable responding. A randomly selected subset of participants (n = 100) also participated in an additional reliability and validity follow-up study. The SODAS was found to be internally consistent (a =.95) and temporally stable (r =.77) over an average 38-day interval. The validity of the SODAS was established by a modera

Predictive validity of DSM-III and Feighner definitions of schizophrenia. A comparison with research diagnosis criteria and CATEGO.

The new DSM-III and the Feighner criteria give definitions of schizophrenia that are restrictive in that they require six months of illness before the diagnosis can be made. The definitions are compared with definitions of schizophrenia in the Research Diagnosis Criteria and CATEGO in terms of predictive validity using a cohort of 125 psychotic patients from the United States-United Kingdom Diagnostic Project. The results showed that while the DSM-III and Feighner definitions were more restrictive, they also had a higher degree of predictive specificity than the other two definitions. No patie

Images and realities of alcohol.

The paper discusses the relationship between the images of alcohol and society, on one hand, and the reality of drinking and drinking problems on the other hand, from the point of view of policy-relevant research. Images of alcohol influence policy but they also depend on the social and cultural environment of policy-making. The epidemiological total consumption theory of alcohol-related problems is used as an example. The theory is embedded in the modern welfare state's ideals and its policy relevance presupposes that these ideals--universalism, consequentialism and public planning--are respe

The multidimensional nature of adult social inhibition: Inhibition, sensitivity and withdrawal facets of the SIQ15.

BACKGROUND: Social inhibition may promote emotional problems in children, but little is known about this disposition in adults. Our research builds on a theory-based model to suggest that adult social inhibition involves distinct behavioral (inhibition), cognitive (sensitivity), and affective (withdrawal) characteristics. METHODS: A total of 1385 adults completed measures of social inhibition, emotional distress, and social stress. Factor analyses, reliability estimates and regression analyses were used to examine the robustness of our model, and the validity of the 15-item Social Inhibition

[Description and validation of a new scale for assessment of autonomy in patients with schizophrenia].

OBJECTIVE: During the last years there is a clear shift of interest from acute to non-acute stages of schizophrenia: psychopathology and quality of remission, social functioning, and quality of life of patients. Authors think that in addition to that, a separate object of research should be the ability of patient to independent existence, or phenomenon of autonomy. For systematic research of autonomy in patients with schizophrenia a specialized assessment scale was constructed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: On the basis of preliminary clinical data, we realized that for description of autonomy it is

Development and psychometric validation of the bullying experiences of the elderly scale in geriatric care.

BACKGROUND: Bullying is a common issue that undermines older adults' health and well-being yet often goes unnoticed. Despite its impact, assessment tools specifically designed to identify bullying against this population are limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop the Bullying Experiences of the Elderly (BEE) scale and evaluate its psychometric properties among older adults. METHODS: The BEE scale was theoretically grounded in Olweus's bullying framework, stereotype embodiment theory, and social-ecological theory. A three-phase cross-sectional design was used, including item generat

Children's Responses to Peer Conflict Scenarios: Feasibility and Initial Psychometric Properties of an Interactive Virtual Reality Assessment in a Clinical and Non-Clinical Sample.

Exploring responses to everyday conflict scenarios is important for understanding the development of aggressive behavior in children and for clinical practice. Current research suggests that simulations within virtual reality (VR) improve traditional approaches. We expanded this research by developing a VR-based assessment (VR test) comprising three ambiguous and three hostile peer-related conflict scenarios. This pilot study examined the test's feasibility and psychometric properties in 8-12-year-old boys, including a clinical sample with aggressive behavior problems (n = 42) and a non-clinic

Clinicians' understanding of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision diagnostic criteria: F62.0 enduring personality change after catastrophic experience.

International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10) has included a diagnostic category of "enduring personality change after catastrophic experience" (EPCACE). Preliminary investigation suggests that there is considerable endorsement in principle for this new category among experts in the field of intentional human trauma, yet many aspects of the diagnosis remain contentious. Criticisms leveled at EPCACE raised issues that question the reliability, validity, and clinical utility of this diagnostic category. In ICD-10, there are 2 sets of doc

Developing a Social Responsibility Pilot Tool to Reduce Helicopter Research and Improve Social Benefit: A Cleanup Site Case Study.

Environmental cleanup processes take place after contamination and possible human exposure to a range of pollutants. Researchers often contribute significantly in developing knowledge to assist remediation efforts; however, their work has sometimes been critiqued as "helicopter research" that does not benefit communities. This study aimed to develop a social responsibility tool that promotes the social impact of research conducted at cleanup sites. We used a qualitative case study approach to understand perspectives of stakeholders working at a contaminated site called Jones Road in Houston, T

Factor Structure, Convergent, and Divergent Validity of the Prodromal Questionnaire-Negative Symptom Subscale.

Negative symptoms such as anhedonia are associated with psychosis risk and poorer outcomes. The Prodromal Questionnaire (PQ) is a self-report questionnaire used to screen for psychosis spectrum symptoms. However, the convergent and divergent validity and underlying factor structure of the PQ-negative symptom subscale (PQ-N) have yet to be examined. Undergraduates (N = 1,556) completed the PQ, Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale, and measures assessing anxiety, depression, and motivation. An exploratory factor analysis conducted on the PQ-N yielded a two-factor solution, reflecting subdimensi
