Structural interventions and social suffering: Responding to amphetamine-type stimulant use among female entertainment and sex workers in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: In Cambodia, HIV infection remains high among female entertainment and sex workers (FESW) and the use of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) is an independent risk factor for unprotected sex and sexually transmitted infections among this group. For decades public health approaches to HIV prevention in low and middle income countries (LMIC) have attempted to target the macro-power relations that shape risk behaviour with structural interventions. Recent research has highlighted that interventions that combine ATS risk reduction, in the form of financial incentives for abstinence, with

Social and structural factors increase inconsistent condom use by sex workers' one-time and regular clients in Northern Uganda.

While sex workers (SWs) bear the brunt of the epidemic in Uganda, there remains a dearth of empirical research on the structural drivers of HIV prevention among SWs. This study examined the drivers of inconsistent condom use by one-time and regular clients of young women SWs in Gulu, Northern Uganda. Data were drawn from the Gulu Sexual Health Study, a cross-sectional study of young SWs, aged 14 years and older (2011-2012). SWs were recruited using peer/SW-led outreach, in partnership with The AIDS Support Organization and other CBOs. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the c

Social network and other correlates of HIV testing: findings from male sex workers and other MSM in Shanghai, China.

Although the Chinese government provides free-of-charge voluntary HIV counseling and testing, HIV testing rates among men who have sex with men (MSM) are reported to be extremely low. This study examines the association of structural and psychosocial factors and social network characteristics with HIV testing behaviors among "money boys" and general MSM in Shanghai. Overall, 28.5% of "money boys" and 50.5% of general MSM had never tested for HIV despite high rates of reported HIV risk behaviors. Factors associated with not testing for HIV included: not knowing of a testing site, limited HIV kn

Alcohol use and environmental factors: A cross-sectional study exploring health risks and social implications among Myanmar migrant workers.

Alcohol use poses unique challenges for migrant workers. This study aims to determine the prevalence of alcohol-related impacts and examine relationships between alcohol use, environmental factors, and their broader effects among Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand. This cross-sectional study surveyed 610 Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand (Sep 2023-Mar 2024) using multi-stage sampling approach. Paper-based questionnaires were uti

How Resilient are Lucid Motivators? Endeavoring Reforms for Effects of Psycho-social Factors on Workers Health Through Concurrent Engineering.

BACKGROUND: As the tremendous impact of extreme workloads, arduous working conditions, and disorganization disrupt humane job definitions in some industries, the need for workplace re-articulation was interfered to ameliorate psycho-social factors and suggest organizational intervention strategies. Especially for colossally wounded health-care (HC) systems, today it is now even more unrealizable to retain workforce resilience considering the immense impact of overwhelming working conditions. METHODS: This study introduces employment of concurrent engineering tools to re-design humane workplac

Compassion fatigue following the September 11 terrorist attacks: a study of secondary trauma among New York City social workers.

Experience suggests that individuals working in the caring and psychotherapeutic professions are among those to provide mental health services to disaster victims suffering from psychological trauma following catastrophic events. Yet, few studies have focused on the emotional exhaustion from working with such clients, referred to as compassion fatigue (CF) in this study, and how CF differs from other occupational hazards, such as secondary trauma (ST) and job burnout. In the present study, we used recently validated scales to predict ST and job burnout related to providing services to those af

Navigating the national rollout: examining Primary Care Network link workers and the integration of local social prescribing models in Redbridge.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing (SP) is increasingly recognised as a key component of primary care, implemented in at least 25 countries by 2023. In England, SP has been nationally rolled out through Primary Care Networks (PCNs), though many areas, including Redbridge in East London, had pre-existing VCSE-led models. How national and local approaches integrate in practice remains underexplored. METHODS: This study used a two-step qualitative design. First, documentary analysis of service planning and evaluation documents mapped the SP referral pathway in Redbridge before and after the national

A longitudinal network analysis of social connection and professional quality of life among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Society depends on people willing to serve in high stress occupations, such as healthcare workers who served on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these roles can take a toll on psychological health, fueling turnover and staff shortages. This toll can be mitigated with social connection. Yet, little is known about how the multifaceted constructs of psychological health and social connection influence one another over time. Understanding these dynamics is critical for identifying effective intervention targets in high-stress professions. METHODS: We conducted a

Implementation of a participatory ergonomic program to reduce musculoskeletal pains among micro-enterprise workers: social network as data transformative pathway.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a participatory ergonomics program to reduce musculoskeletal pain among car repair technicians in small workshops (<5 employees) in Iran. Thirty-six participants assessed ergonomic risks and interventions before and after implementation using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and ergonomic checkpoints. WhatsApp was used to facilitate communication and feedback due to geographical dispersion. Five key ergonomic interventions were implemented across 36 micro-enterprises, with 31 participants (86 %) completing all stages of the program. In total, 4

Experience of social harms among female sex workers following HIV self-test distribution in Malawi: results of a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Malawi, female sex workers (FSW) have high HIV incidence and regular testing is suggested. HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a safe and acceptable alternative to standard testing services. This study assessed; whether social harms were more likely to be reported after HIVST distribution to FSW by peer distributors than after facility-based HIV testing and whether FSW regretted HIVST use or experienced associated relationship problems. METHODS: Peer HIVST distributors, who were FSW, were recruited in Blantyre district, Malawi between February and July 2017. Among HIVST recipients a pr

Finding what works: Predicting health or social service linkage in drug using, African American, female sex workers in Miami, FL.

Female sex workers (FSWs) encounter numerous challenges in accessing health and social services. In this study of drug using, African American FSWs, the authors examine specific factors associated with health or social service linkage among participants in a randomized intervention trial. Respondent linkage was significantly associated with individual factors (living alone, severe internal mental distress, and traumatic victimization) and project-related variables (attending five case management sessions and client engagement rating). In the multivariate model, higher client engagement and ses
