Oxytocin and social functioning.

Social anxiety is a form of anxiety characterized by continuous fear of one or more social or performance situations. Although multiple treatment modalities (cognitive behavioral therapy, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors/selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines) exist for social anxiety, they are effective for only 60% to 70% of patients. Thus, researchers have looked for other candidates for social anxiety treatment. Our review focuses on the peptide oxytocin as a potential therapeutic option for individuals with social anxiety. Animal research both in nonprimates

[Epidemiology of social phobia].

AIM: Social phobia (SP) represents one of the most frequent psychiatric disorders. The results of a systematic review of the literature published between 1987 and 2008 on the prevalence of SP in general population are reported. METHODS: A literature search of epidemiologic studies of SP was conducted on PubMed and Medline electronic archives and by canvassing English-language and other European languages publications. Eligible publications were restricted to community surveys on adult population (age 16 to 65), using DSM and ICD criteria and analysing lifetime, 12 months and 1 month prevalenc

Pharmacotherapy for social phobia.

BACKGROUND: Social phobia (SP), or social anxiety disorder, is a prevalent and disabling disorder. There is growing evidence that SP is mediated by specific neurobiological factors, and increased interest in the use of medication in its treatment. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of pharmacotherapy for Social Phobia, and to determine whether particular classes of medication are more effective and/or acceptable than others in its treatment. SEARCH STRATEGY: Studies of the pharmacotherapy of SP were identified using literature searches of the Cochrane Depression, Anxiety & Neurosis Group (CCD

Social anxiety disorder.

Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and disabling disorder that may occur in different cultural settings, it is under-diagnosed by clinicians. In order to facilitate accurate diagnosis, the clinical features and differential diagnosis of SAD are described, together with useful assessment instruments for clinicians. Aetiological evidence suggests that the causal pathways for SAD include genetic, neurobiological, temperamental and cognitive factors. A range of effective treatments for SAD are available: current findings suggest that the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSR

The social anxiety spectrum.

Social anxiety disorder is well suited to the spectrum concept because it has trait-like qualities of early onset, chronicity, and no empirically derived threshold that demarcates normal from clinically significant trait social anxiety. Social anxiety disorder has been shown to respond to relatively specific pharmacologic and cognitive-behavioral therapies, which makes identification of other conditions that may lie on the social anxiety disorder spectrum important because of possible treatment implications. Biologic markers associated with social anxiety disorder also may be shared by similar

Self and social identity.

In this chapter, we examine the self and identity by considering the different conditions under which these are affected by the groups to which people belong. From a social identity perspective we argue that group commitment, on the one hand, and features of the social context, on the other hand, are crucial determinants of central identity concerns. We develop a taxonomy of situations to reflect the different concerns and motives that come into play as a result of threats to personal and group identity and degree of commitment to the group. We specify for each cell in this taxonomy how these

Fluoridation and social equity.

The overall reduction in caries prevalence and severity in the United States over recent decades is largely due to widespread exposure to fluoride, most notably from the fluoridation of drinking waters. Despite this overall reduction, however, caries distribution today remains skewed, with the poor and deprived carrying a disproportionate share of the disease burden. Dental caries, like many other diseases, is directly related to low socioeconomic status (SES). In some communities, however, caries experience has now diminished to the point where the need for continuing water fluoridation is be

In 1990s, it was found that GSAD is more common, more disabling, and more chronic than previously realized. For the first time, there are good data about a range of effective treatment options that can offer these patients substantial relief and protection from their disability.

The origins of social phobia.

A greater understanding of the origins of social phobia is much needed. The research to date is limited by the relatively small number of studies that sample clinical populations of individuals with social phobia. There is, however, research derived from related areas such as shyness, social anxiety, self-consciousness, peer neglect, and social withdrawal that contributes to a richer understanding of the etiology of social fears. Combining these areas of research, this review addresses four main factors that may be important to the origins of social phobia: (a) genetic factors; (b) family fact

The neurobiology of social phobia.

Although Social Phobia has been recognised for centuries in comparison with other anxiety disorders, relatively little work has been done to understand its neural basis. The present review attempts to redress this balance by giving an overview of the current state of knowledge in this disorder. By putting together data from the treatment responses to specific agents, the effects of chemical challenges which have been used in other anxiety disorders and by reviewing data on central and peripheral neurotransmitter and endochrine abnormalities, it is possible to begin to generate some potentially

Comorbidities in social phobia.

In a sample of 2096 consecutive primary care patients recruited in the Paris region, social phobia was a highly prevalent disorder (5.1%). The most frequent comorbid condition was depressive episode, which affected 70% of patients with social phobia of early onset (at less than 15 years of age), while the highest association was with agoraphobia (odds ratio 10.4). No association was observed with generalized anxiety disorder. Alcohol abuse and suicidal ideation and attempts are also commonly associated with social phobia. However, when patients presented to a general practitioner with comorbid

The pharmacotherapy of social phobia.

Social phobia has been recognized as a discrete diagnostic condition only relatively recently. Epidemiological studies have shown that social phobia is associated with significant impairment and an increasing body of evidence has now indicated that pharmacological treatment is effective. Placebo-controlled studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor phenelzine. A reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A, moclobemide, is better tolerated and safer than the irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors and placebo-controlled studies have also demonstrated efficacy fo

Paroxetine in social phobia.

BACKGROUND: Several open trials suggest the efficacy of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in social phobia. This study attempted to assess the efficacy of paroxetine, a new SSRI, in the treatment of social phobia. METHOD: Paroxetine was administered to 18 patients who had a primary DSM-III-R diagnosis of social phobia, generalized type (diagnosed by using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R), in a 12-week open, clinical trial. Treatment began at 10 mg of paroxetine daily and was increased according to clinical response and side effects. Patients completed self-re

A review of social phobia.

Social phobia is a disabling disorder that has only recently become a focus of investigation. Epidemiological studies have shown social phobia too be far more common than previously thought. These studies have also found that social phobia is frequently associated with other comorbid psychiatric disorders ranging from specific phobia and substance abuse to major mood disorders. Studies of functional morbidity have found that social phobia is associated with significant educational and economic incapacitation. The confluence of recent biological data supports the contention that social phobia i
