The in vitro effect of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrite on blastoconidia and hyphae of Candida albicans was studied. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) were used as NO donors. Both minimal and complex media at two pH values, 7.0 and 4.5, were used for the assays. OBJECTIVE: Dilatation of the intercellular space (DIS) of the esophageal epithelium is recognized as one of the earliest histological changes in gastroesophageal reflux disease patients. At the human gastroesophageal junction, reactive nitrogen oxide species (RNOS) are generated luminally through the entero-salivary re-circulation of dietary nitrate. In cases with gastroesophageal reflux, the site of luminal RNOS generation may shift to the distal esophagus. A case report is presented for a patient with nitroprusside-induced cyanide intoxication. The patient received approximately 1 g sodium nitroprusside through an intravenous infusion of the drug over 6 d. The toxicity was treated with antidotes, sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate, followed by hemodialysis. Hemodialysis significantly removed thiocyanate but not cyanide from the patient's extracorporeal circulation. Cyanide is a likely weapon for terrorists due to its notoriety, lethality, and availability. Poisoning results in central nervous system and cardiovascular dysfunction due to inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation. Laboratory findings of anion gap metabolic acidosis and hyperlactemia aid in confirming the diagnosis. Treatment for significant poisonings includes aggressive supportive care and administration of antidotes such as sodium nitrite, sodium thiosulfate, and hydroxocobalamin. Survivors of significant poisonings can have long-term neurologic dysfunction.

Dynamics of the oxidation rate of unithiol (sodium dimercaptopropansulfonate) by sodium nitrite was studied under perfect ecological conditions in Antarctica. Short-term spikes (signals) in optical density of the examined solution were found. Special features of these signals, such as the high penetrating ability, the obvious dependence of number of signals on the Sun' longitude, and the high speed of propagation (V > or = 300,000 km/s), indicate the astrophysical origin and possible gravitational causality of these signals.
