Chaotic and phase-locked responses of the somatosensory cortex to a periodic medial lemniscus stimulation in the anesthetized rat.

Field potential responses of the somatosensory cortex to a periodic medial lemniscus (ML) fiber stimulation were investigated in anesthetized rats. Since the field potential responses of the cortex depend on the depth of anesthesia, two criteria were introduced to control the depth of anesthesia. One criterion is that spindle oscillations are caused by a single shock to ML fibers, and the other is that the dominant frequency of spontaneous field potential rhythm is in the frequency range of the delta wave. Phase-lockings and chaotic responses occurred depending on stimulus parameters under the

Immediate and chronic changes in responses of somatosensory cortex in adult flying-fox after digit amputation.

The somatosensory cortex of adult mammals has been shown to have a capacity to reorganize when inputs are removed by cutting afferent nerves or amputating a part of the body. The area of cortex that would normally respond to stimulation of the missing input can become responsive to inputs from other parts of the body surface. Although a few animals have been studied with repeat recording, no attempt has been made to follow the time-course of changes at cortical loci and the immediate effects of a small amputation have not been reported. We have followed the changes in response in the primary s

Connections of area 2 of somatosensory cortex with the anterior pulvinar and subdivisions of the ventroposterior complex in macaque monkeys.

The principal goal of the present study was to determine the thalamic connections of area 2 of postcentral somatosensory cortex of monkeys. The placement of injections of anatomical tracers (horseradish peroxidase, wheat germ agglutinin, or 3H-proline) was guided by extensive microelectrode maps of cortex in the region of the injection site. These maps identified the body parts represented in the cortex included in the injection site, and provided information about the physiological boundaries of area 2, which was related later to the cortical architecture. Most injections were placed in the r

Synchronal dual brain stimulation over the somatosensory cortex modulated social touch-induced analgesia depending on empathy.

Social touch, when provided as emotional support, can induce pain relief. Alpha inter-brain synchrony in the somatosensory cortex may be a neural factor contributing to the pain relief induced by social touch. This study investigated whether artificial manipulation of inter-brain communication in the pain-receiver and touch-giver could modulate touch-induced analgesia using transcranial alternating current stimulation. Sixteen same-sex pairs of participants were assigned the roles of pain-receiver and touch-giver during alpha-band transcranial alternating current stimulation applied to the som

Spared ulnar nerve injury results in increased layer III-VI excitability in the pig somatosensory cortex.

This study describes cortical recordings in a large animal nerve injury model. We investigated differences in primary somatosensory cortex (S1) hyperexcitability when stimulating injured and uninjured nerves and how different cortical layers contribute to S1 hyperexcitability after spared ulnar nerve injury. We used a multielectrode array to record single-neuron activity in the S1 of ten female Danish landrace pigs. Electrical stimulation of the injured and uninjured nerve evoked brain activity up to 3 h after injury. The peak amplitude and latency of early and late peristimulus time histogram

Altered brainstem-cortex activation and interaction in migraine patients: somatosensory evoked EEG responses with machine learning.

BACKGROUND: To gain a comprehensive understanding of the altered sensory processing in patients with migraine, in this study, we developed an electroencephalography (EEG) protocol for examining brainstem and cortical responses to sensory stimulation. Furthermore, machine learning techniques were employed to identify neural signatures from evoked brainstem-cortex activation and their interactions, facilitating the identification of the presence and subtype of migraine. METHODS: This study analysed 1,000-epoch-averaged somatosensory evoked responses from 342 participants, comprising 113 healthy

Home treatment against fatigue in multiple sclerosis by a personalized, bilateral whole-body somatosensory cortex stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue in multiple sclerosis (MS) is a highly invalidating symptom with no pharmacological efficacious therapies, which furthermore present frequent severe side effects. In two previous randomized controlled trials we observed the efficacy of a personalized neuromodulation treatment consisting of a personalized transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) for 15 min per day for 5 days (Faremus). METHODS: By this medical-device phase II study, we aimed at assessing the feasibility, acceptance, safety and efficacy of Faremus treatment when applied at patients' home. We considered

Improved differentiation of tactile activations in human secondary somatosensory cortex and thalamus using cardiac-triggered fMRI.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can reveal human brain activations with high precision. The accuracy may, however, be impaired by movement and deformation of brain tissue associated with cardiac pulsations. Here we corrected for such artifacts by time-locking the fMRI data acquisition to the cardiac cycle in ten subjects who received tactile stimuli to their lips, fingers, and toes. The imaged brain areas covered the parietal operculum and the thalamus, including the secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) bilaterally. Variance of the blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal decreased on

Muscarinic cholinergic receptor binding in rat hindlimb somatosensory cortex following partial deafferentation by sciatic nerve transection.

Peripheral nerve injury or amputation leads to extensive changes within the central representations of the mammalian body surface. The mechanisms responsible for post-traumatic reorganization of these maps in adults may also, at least partly, underlie a more general feature of the somatosensory system--the capacity for stimulus-dependent plasticity. Acetylcholine has been implicated in both of these processes. We studied the binding of the ligands [3H]QNB and [3H]pirenzepine in rat hindlimb somatosensory cortex from 1 to 14 days following sciatic nerve transection. Although the [3H]QNB binding

Connections of the ventral granular frontal cortex of macaques with perisylvian premotor and somatosensory areas: anatomical evidence for somatic representation in primate frontal association cortex.

In macaque monkeys with injections of tritiated amino acids or horseradish peroxidase in the ventrolateral granular frontal cortex, we observed extensive anterograde and retrograde labeling of the premotor and somatosensory cortex in and around the lateral sulcus. Comparable labeling was not present with large and small control injections of the dorsal granular cortex. Cytoarchitectonic evaluation of the perisylvian cortex in the three cases examined in detail indicated that labeled areas included the ventral premotor cortex (area 6V); the precentral opercular and orbitofrontal opercular areas

Somatosensory and prefrontal cortex activity relates to emotional outcomes and hair cortisol concentration in chronic postsurgical pain.

Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) poses significant socioeconomic and humanitarian challenges. This study investigated relationships between resting-state neural activation in the somatosensory cortex (SMC) and emotional functioning outcomes (depression, anxiety, perceived stress), and between prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation and chronic stress, measured by hair cortisol concentration (HCC); and whether pain intensity moderates these relationships in females with CPSP. Twenty-nine females with CPSP reported baseline pain, completed emotional functioning questionnaires, underwent functional N

Cerebellar vermis and somatosensory-motor cortex differentially contribute to sex differences in acute pain perception in rats.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a universal experience, yet sex differences in acute pain perception remain unclear. Here, we examined sex-specific brain responses to acute pain evoked by tail clamping in rats. METHODS: A suitable isoflurane concentration for resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was identified to ensure sedation without suppressing nociceptive responsiveness. rs-fMRI was performed to assess sex differences in brain activity and functional connectivity during acute pain, with control groups receiving touch stimulation or isoflurane-only exposure to identify pain-s

Primary somatosensory cortex oscillations in trigeminal neuralgia: laser-evoked signatures and their potential relevance to microvascular decompression.

Classical trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a severe chronic pain disorder characterized by sudden, intense facial pain attacks and represents a major burden for affected individuals. Microvascular decompression (MVD) can provide pain relief, yet not all patients benefit equally. A key challenge in selecting candidates for MVD lies in the limited predictive accuracy of current diagnostics, which mainly rely on subjective pain history and structural MRI findings. Since many asymptomatic individuals show neurovascular contact on imaging, its prognostic value remains limited. Electrophysiological meas

Endocannabinoid-mediated rescue of somatosensory cortex activity, plasticity and related behaviors following an early in life concussion.

Due to the assumed plasticity of immature brain, early in life brain alterations are thought to lead to better recoveries in comparison to the mature brain. Despite clinical needs, how neuronal networks and associated behaviors are affected by early in life brain stresses, such as pediatric concussions, have been overlooked. Here we provide first evidence in mice that a single early in life concussion durably increases neuronal activity in the somatosensory cortex into adulthood, disrupting neuronal integration while the animal is performing sensory-related tasks. This represents a previously

α-tACS over the somatosensory cortex enhances tactile spatial discrimination in healthy subjects with low alpha activity.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous oscillations in the somatosensory cortex, especially of the alpha (8 - 14 Hz) and gamma (60 - 80 Hz) frequencies, affect tactile perception; moreover, these oscillations can be selectively modulated by frequency-matched transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the basis of ongoing oscillatory brain activity. To examine whether tACS can actually improve tactile perception via alpha and gamma modulation, we measured the effects of 10-Hz and 70-Hz tACS (α- and γ-tACS) on the left somatosensory cortex on right-finger tactile spatial orientation discriminatio

Somatosensory and transcranial direct current stimulation effects on manual dexterity and motor cortex function: A metaplasticity study.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive neuromodulation may provide treatment strategies for neurological deficits affecting movement, such as stroke. For example, weak electrical stimulation applied to the hand by wearing a "mesh glove" (MGS) can transiently increase primary motor cortex (M1) excitability. Conversely, transcranial direct current stimulation with the cathode over M1 (c-tDCS) can decrease corticomotor excitability. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We applied M1 c-tDCS as a priming adjuvant to MGS and hypothesised metaplastic effects would be apparent in improved motor performance and modulation of M1 i

Repetitive training of a synchronised movement induces short-term plastic changes in the human primary somatosensory cortex.

The aim of our study was to assess possible short-term plastic changes in the human primary somatosensory cortex (S1) induced by a repetitive synchronised movement of the right thumb and shoulder. We therefore performed a source localisation of somatosensory evoked potentials after median nerve stimulation in twelve healthy subjects before and after 1 h of motor training. We found a significant medial shift of the N20 dipole on the left hemisphere after training, whereas the dipole location on the right hemisphere remained unchanged. However, no significant correlation was seen between the dip

Neuronal activity in somatosensory cortex of monkeys using a precision grip. III. Responses to altered friction perturbations.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the activity changes in single units of the somatosensory cortex in response to lubricating and adhesive coatings applied to a hand-held object. Three monkeys were trained to grasp an object between the thumb and index fingers and to lift and hold it stationary within a narrow position window for 1 s before release. Grip forces normal to the skin surface, load forces tangential to the skin surface, and the displacement of the object were measured on each trial. Adhesive (rosin) and lubricant (petroleum jelly) coatings were applied to the smooth

Sequential roles of primary somatosensory cortex and posterior parietal cortex in tactile-visual cross-modal working memory: a single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (spTMS) study.

BACKGROUND: Both monkey neurophysiological and human EEG studies have shown that association cortices, as well as primary sensory cortical areas, play an essential role in sequential neural processes underlying cross-modal working memory. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to further examine causal and sequential roles of the primary sensory cortex and association cortex in cross-modal working memory. METHODS: Individual MRI-based single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (spTMS) was applied to bilateral primary somatosensory cortices (SI) and the contralateral posterior parietal cortex

Sensory Cortical Hyperexcitability in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Involves a Broad Hand Representation Within the Primary Somatosensory Cortex.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Sensory cortical hyperexcitability, reflected by enlarged median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), has been reported in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and is associated with shorter survival. This study investigated whether similar changes involve the ulnar nerve representation within the hand area of the primary somatosensory cortex and examined their relationship with survival. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with sporadic ALS and 42 healthy controls were retrospectively studied. Sensory nerve action potentials (SNAPs) and SEPs were recorded following media
