Ocular conditions and injuries, detection and management in spaceflight.

Ocular trauma or other ocular conditions can be significantly debilitating in space. A literature review of over 100 articles and NASA evidence books, queried for eye related trauma, conditions, and exposures was conducted. Ocular trauma and conditions during NASA space missions during the Space Shuttle Program and ISS through Expedition 13 in 2006 were reviewed. There were 70 corneal abrasions, 4 dry eyes, 4 eye debris, 5 complaints of ocular irritation, 6 chemical burns, and 5 ocular infections noted. Unique exposures on spaceflight, such as foreign bodies, including celestial dust, which ma

Terrestrial stress analogs for spaceflight associated immune system dysregulation.

Recent data indicates that dysregulation of the immune system occurs and persists during spaceflight. Impairment of immunity, especially in conjunction with elevated radiation exposure and limited clinical care, may increase certain health risks during exploration-class deep space missions (i.e. to an asteroid or Mars). Research must thoroughly characterize immune dysregulation in astronauts to enable development of a monitoring strategy and validate any necessary countermeasures. Although the International Space Station affords an excellent platform for on-orbit research, access may be constr

using photovoice to foster a student vision for natural spaces on a college campus in the Pacific Northwest United States.

Undergraduate students face a host of stressors and may be particularly susceptible to encountering health-related challenges throughout college life. Seventy-two (N = 72) undergraduate students enrolled at a newly developed university campus located in the pacific northwest United States used the photovoice research method in crafting a vision for how natural spaces on campus might be maintained and minimally developed to promote student health. Five student-created themes emerged: 1) mental and physical health, 2) developing community spaces, 3) sustainable infrastructure design, 4) preservi

How Do Ecological and Recreational Features of Waterfront Space Affect Its Vitality? Developing Coupling Coordination and Enhancing Waterfront Vitality.

People are increasingly concerned with natural environment quality (NEQ) as well as recreation services (RS) as the popularity of natural experiences grows. Specifically, public spaces in ecologically sensitive areas must achieve coordinated eco-recreational development. Waterfront spaces fall into this category, providing a high-quality natural environment and facilitating various recreational activities. This paper uses two waterfront spaces, Foshan New City Riverfront Park and Nanhai Qiandeng Lake Park, as sample sites, divides 22 waterfront space samples into specific research objects, int

Investigating sexual harassment in online video games: How personality and context factors are related to toxic sexual behaviors against fellow players.

Online video games are social spaces for players from around the world. They use this space to form communities, relationships, and identities. However, gaming communities are not always welcoming, and some are even perceived as being "toxic." A prevalent issue is online sexual harassment, which is keeping many women from participating in the gaming community. Research on the factors contributing to the problem is limited, though. The present study replicates and expands previous research, using a sample of 856 online gamers. The study supports earlier findings that found hostile sexism and so

Skateparks as hybrid elements of the city.

This research argues that the spaces of skateboarding are hybrid. This is evidenced by not only the construction of numerous skateparks throughout the world, and their incorporation of design elements from the city, but the exclusion of skateboarders from urban spaces through hostile architecture. More specficially, skateparks, which are unique among sport facilities, are shown to be evolving hybrid places in a continuing dialogue with the city under which they are geographically and politically contained.

Environmental and Health Effects of Ventilation in Subway Stations: A Literature Review.

Environmental health in subway stations, a typical type of urban underground space, is becoming increasingly important. Ventilation is the principal measure for optimizing the complex physical environment in a subway station. This paper narratively reviews the environmental and health effects of subway ventilation and discusses the relevant engineering, environmental, and medical aspects in combination. Ventilation exerts a notable dual effect on environmental health in a subway station. On the one hand, ventilation controls temperature, humidity, and indoor air quality to ensure human comfort

A conceptual design for cosmo-biology experiments in Earth's Orbit.

A conceptual design was developed for a cosmo-biology experiment. It is intended to expose simulated interstellar ice materials deposited on dust grains to the space environment. The experimental system consists of a cryogenic system to keep solidified gas sample, and an optical device to select and amplify the ultraviolet part of the solar light for irradiation. By this approach, the long lasting chemical evolution of icy species could be examined in a much shorter time of exposure by amplification of light intensity. The removal of light at longer wavelength, which is ineffective to induce p

Security and Safety Concerns in Air Taxis: A Systematic Literature Review.

Different from traditional transport systems, such as cars or trains, which are limited by land transit space, flying cars (such as UAS, drones, and air taxis) do not occupy space with traffic. They have a degree of freedom in space and time, smaller displacement, and consequently, less stress for their users. Large companies and researchers around the world are working with different architectures, algorithms, and techniques to test air taxi transport to serve a significant proportion of people safely and autonomously. One of the main issues surrounding the diffusion of air taxis is safety an

Neuropil Distribution in the Anterior Cingulate and Occipital Cortex of Artiodactyls.

Relatively little neuroscience research has been focused on artiodactyls. Recent observations of complex social interactions in domestic and wild species suggest that analyses of artiodactyl brain anatomy would be of comparative value. In this study, we examined how the distribution of cortical neuropil space (a proxy for connectivity) varies across representative members of this diverse clade. Using image analysis techniques, we quantified the neuropil space in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the occipital (putative primary visual) cortex (OC) of 12 artiodactyl species from adult spec

Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) and its countermeasures.

Astronauts can develop a distinct collection of neuro-ophthalmic findings during long duration spaceflight, collectively known as Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). These clinical characteristics include optic disc edema, hyperopic refractive shifts, globe flattening, and chorioretinal folds, which may pose a health risk for future space exploration. Obtaining knowledge of SANS and countermeasures for its prevention is crucial for upcoming crewed space missions and warrants a multidisciplinary approach. This review examines the potential causes and countermeasures of SANS, in

A Pilot Trial of SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) in Autism.

Family accommodation describes changes parents make to their behavior, intended to alleviate their child's distress, which stems from a psychopathology. In anxiety, studies show that accommodation alleviates distress in the short term but is associated with increased symptom severity, greater functional impairment, poorer treatment outcomes, increased caregiver burden and disruption to family functioning longitudinally. Research shows high prevalence of family accommodation of anxiety in autism. While the most common treatments for anxiety in autism are cognitive-behavior therapy and pharmacol

Associations of green and blue space and the natural environment with suicidal ideation: The role of psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated the importance of environmental factors and exposure to the natural environment for human physical and mental health. However, the associations between green space, blue space, and the natural environment (GBN) and the risk of suicidal ideation have not been prospectively studied, and the potential role of psychiatric disorders in these associations has not been explored. METHODS: Longitudinal data from the UK Biobank was used. At study baseline (2006-2010), 135,901 participants (female: 56.6%; mean age 56.05 ± 7.73 years) were included. A series

Cardiovascular physiology. Effects of microgravity.

Experiments during spaceflight and its groundbase analog, bedrest, provide consistent data which demonstrate that numerous changes in cardiovascular function occur as part of the physiological adaptation process to the microgravity environment. These include elevated heart rate and venous compliance, lowered blood volume, central venous pressure and stroke volume, and attenuated autonomic reflex functions. Although most of these adaptations are not functionally apparent during microgravity exposure, they manifest themselves during the return to the gravitational challenge of earth's terrestria

The utility of animal models to inform the next generation of human space exploration.

Animals have played a vital role in every stage of space exploration, from early sub-orbital flights to contemporary missions. New physiological and psychological challenges arise with plans to venture deeper into the solar system. Advances in chimeric and knockout animal models, along with genetic modification techniques have enhanced our ability to study the effects of microgravity in greater detail. However, increased investment in the purposeful design of habitats and payloads, as well as in AI-enhanced behavioral monitoring in orbit can better support the ethical and effective use of anim
