Object-centred neglect: simulation with head-centred coding based on Gaussian gaze-dependent units.

Right brain damaged patients affected by contralesional object-centred neglect are able to process all objects around them but systematically omit the left part of these objects. We show that pure object-centred neglect can be simulated by a basis function neural network in which the activity of units allowing head-centred coding of space is based on the activity of gaze-dependent units with no lateral gradient of preferred eye positions along the horizontal space. This type of network simulates complete dissociation between object-centred and egocentric neglect, as observed in patients' copie

An analytical approach to generating orbital maneuver sets for spacecraft on-orbit services.

With the increasing complexity of space missions, the accuracy and efficiency of orbital maneuver planning have become crucial. This paper proposes an analytical derivation-based method for generating orbital maneuver solution sets to address the maneuver planning problem for spacecraft on-orbit services under J2 perturbation. By establishing an analytical relative motion model corrected for J2 perturbation, this method enables the rapid generation of maneuver solution sets that satisfy multiple constraints, providing diverse options for the initial mission planning phase. Modeling and detection of acoustic waves induced by ultra-high-dose-rate electron beams from a radiotherapy linear accelerator.

FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT), as a burgeoning and promising cancer treatment approach, spares normal tissues from radiation damage by delivering ultra-high doses to tumors within an extremely short duration, without compromising anti-tumor efficacy. Specifically, electron-based FLASH-RT can be used to treat superficial skin cancers, offering unique advantages in clinical radiotherapy. To enhance understanding of the physical characteristics of acoustic waves induced by ultra-high-dose-rate pulsed electron-beam irradiation, this study developed an integrated simulation workflow based on Monte

Modeling grain selection for single-crystal thin-wall inconel 718 tubes by laser powder bed fusion.

Additive manufacturing using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) offers significant potential for fabricating high-performance nickel-based superalloy components; however, achieving single-crystal architectures remains limited by competitive grain growth. This study proposes a geometry-assisted grain selection strategy inspired by directional solidification casting for thin-wall Inconel 718 tubes. A thermo-mechanical simulation framework based on Simufact Additive is employed to evaluate a parametric design space of spiral grain selectors comprising a starter block and a helical section.Seventy geo

Eliminating electromagnetic interference for RF shielding-free MRI via k-space convolution: Insights from MR parallel imaging advances.

Recent advances in ultra-low field MRI have attracted attention from both academic and industrial MR communities for its potential in democratizing MRI applications. One of the most striking features on those advances is shielding-free imaging by actively sensing and eliminating the electromagnetic interference (EMI). In this study, we review the analytical approaches for EMI estimation/elimination, and investigate their theoretical basis and relations with parallel imaging reconstruction. We provide further understanding of the existing approaches, formulating EMI estimation as convolution in

Design and Simulation of On-Orbit Assembly System Based on Insect-Inspired Transportation.

In response to the requirements of large-scale space in-orbit assembly and the special environment of low gravity in space, this paper proposes a small robot structure with the integration of assembly, connection, and vibration reduction functionalities. Each robot consists of a body and three composite mechanical arms-legs, which can dock and transfer assembly units with the transport spacecraft unit, and also crawl along the edge truss of the assembly unit to a designated location to complete in-orbit assembly while ensuring precision. A theoretical model of robot motion was established for

Design of a high-uniformity illumination system based on multi-beam superposition.

In biomedical experiments such as in vivo microscopy, to achieve high-uniformity illumination on two differently sized illuminated surfaces within a confined space, a multi-beam superposition illumination system comprising a laser source, multi-channel optical fibers, a square light pipe, and a projection lens was designed. Based on the principle of étendue conservation, the integrating square light pipe was designed; meanwhile, using the edge ray principle, the projection lens was designed in the form of critical illumination, and uniformity was enhanced through the superposition of four symm

A Low-Cost, Self-Made Simulation Model for Shoulder Arthroscopy Surgical Skills Acquisition.

The benefits of simulation training for technical skills development in orthopaedic arthroscopic surgery have been well documented. Access and high costs are barriers to regular use, which may be overcome with a low-cost, self-made model. Examples from established knee arthroscopy models can be adapted to a shoulder arthroscopy model for training specific skills. Utilising an inspection endoscope camera, smartphone, shoebox, and easily accessible materials, a self-made shoulder arthroscopy simulator can be constructed for £30. Instructions for design and construction are included, with interch

[Interactive Virtual Simulation with Haptics for Neurosurgery].

We established a unique pre-surgical simulation method by applying interactive virtual simulation(IVS)using multi-fusion three-dimensional imaging data, presenting high-quality visualization of microsurgical anatomies. Our IVS provided a realistic environment for imitating surgical manipulations, such as dissecting bones, retracting brain tissues, and removing tumors, with tactile and kinesthetic sensations delivered through a specific haptic device. The great advantage of our IVS was in deciding the most appropriate craniotomy and bone resection to create the optimal surgical window and obtai

3D Computer graphics simulation to obtain optimal surgical exposure during microvascular decompression of the glossopharyngeal nerve.

The affected artery in glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) is most often the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) from the caudal side or the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) from the rostral side. This technical report describes two representative cases of GPN, one with PICA as the affected artery and the other with AICA, and demonstrates the optimal approach for each affected artery. We used 3D computer graphics (3D CG) simulation to consider the ideal transposition of the affected artery in any position and approach. Subsequently, we performed microvascular decompression (MVD)

Lymphangiomatoid pattern in diffuse malignant mesothelioma of the pleura: a report of six cases.

The multiplicity of epithelioid and mesenchymal forms of diffuse malignant mesothelioma includes patterns that may mimic another process. Identification of the multiplicity of patterns may help in the diagnosis of diffuse malignant mesothelioma. One pattern that has not been described is lymphangiomatoid. We observed six cases with ovoid or elongated or irregular anastomosing vascular-like spaces lined by flattened cells simulating lymphangioma. The luminal spaces could contain proteinaceous material simulating lymph but not erythrocytes. The cells lining the spaces were mesothelial by immunoh

Free energy surface of an intrinsically disordered protein: comparison between temperature replica exchange molecular dynamics and bias-exchange metadynamics.

Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), which are expected to be largely unstructured under physiological conditions, make up a large fraction of eukaryotic proteins. Molecular dynamics simulations have been utilized to probe structural characteristics of these proteins, which are not always easily accessible to experiments. However, exploration of the conformational space by brute force molecular dynamics simulations is often limited by short time scales. Present literature provides a number of enhanced sampling methods to explore protein conformational space in molecular simulations more e

Biomechanics of healthy subjects during exercise on a simulated vibration isolation and stabilization system.

With long-term space flights being planned for the Moon and Mars, proper countermeasures must be taken to facilitate human health in microgravity environments. Exercise is a vital countermeasure used to prevent bone and muscle loss, among other health interests. Future exploration missions encourage creating an exercise device that is both compact and can be used to properly execute exercise by the astronauts. Current design considerations include interfacing an exercise device with a vibration isolation and stabilization (VIS) system, which is necessary for protecting the spacecraft and sensi

Estimating sea lice infestation pressure on salmon farms: Comparing different methods using multivariate state-space models.

Sea lice are ectoparasites of salmonids, and are considered to be one of the main threats to Atlantic salmon farming. Sea lice infestation on a farm is usually initiated by attachment of the free-living copepodid stage derived from the surrounding water, frequently originating from adult lice on the same farm or from neighboring salmonid farms, referred to as internal and external sources, respectively. Various approaches have been proposed to quantify sea lice infestation pressure on farms to improve the management of this pest. Here, we review and compare five of these methods based on sea l

Comparison of patient-ventilator interfaces based on their computerized effective dead space.

PURPOSE: Non-invasive ventilation is largely used to treat acute and chronic respiratory failure. This ventilation encounters a non-negligible rate of failure related to the used interface/mask, but the reasons for this failure remain unclear. In order to shed light on this issue and to better understand the effects of the geometrical design of interfaces, we aimed to quantify flow, pressure and gas composition in terms of CO(2) and O(2) at the passage through different types of interface (oronasal mask, integral mask and helmet). In particular, we postulated that due to specific gas flow pass

Cerebrospinal fluid dynamics in the human cranial subarachnoid space: an overlooked mediator of cerebral disease. I. Computational model.

Abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow is suspected to be a contributor to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's through the accumulation of toxic metabolites, and to the malfunction of intracranial pressure regulation, possibly through disruption of neuroendocrine communication. For the understanding of transport processes involved in either, knowledge of in vivo CSF dynamics is important. We present a three-dimensional, transient, subject-specific computational analysis of CSF flow in the human cranial subarachnoid space (SAS) based on in vivo magnetic resonance

Uneven terrain affects metabolic cost and gait in simulated complex lunar surfaces.

Objective. Upcoming missions of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Moon will include extensive human exploration of the lunar surface. Walking will be essential for many exploration tasks, and metabolic cost during ambulation on simulated complex lunar surfaces requires further characterization. In this study, ten healthy subjects (6 male and 4 female) participated in three simulated lunar terrain walking conditions at the NASA Johnson Space Center's planetary 'Rock Yard': (1) flat terrain, (2) flat terrain with obstacles, and (3) mixed terrain.Approach.Energy expe

Critical analysis of the accuracy of models predicting or extracting liquid structure information.

This work aims at a critical assessment of properties predicting or extracting information on the density and structure of liquids. State-of-the-art NVT and NpT molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed on five liquids: methanol, chloroform, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran, and ethanol. These simulations allow the computation of properties based on first principles, including the equilibrium density and radial distribution functions (RDFs), characterizing the liquid structure. Refinements have been incorporated in the MD simulations by taking into account basis set superposition er

Cross-scale modeling of bacteria-contaminant spatiotemporal dynamics in 3D bioprinted hydrogel for dye biodegradation.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting enables precise construction of functional biohydrogels, yet effective simulation bacterial dynamics within these structures remains challenging. Here, we developed a novel gelatin/cellulose/sodium alginate (GCSA) biohydrogel incorporating Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 with superior mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Using Direct Blue 71 (DB71) as a model contaminant, we demonstrated efficient bioremediation while elucidating protective mechanisms through comprehensive experimental characterization.
